BB> I am looking for a quiet expanding bullet to use on squirrels.
BB> The CCI brand CB Long .22 rimfire works very well at my shooting
BB> distances (under 50 feet), has adequate accuracy and is very quiet in
BB> the 26" barrel of my Remington 513-T. The problem is that the CB
BB> solid just greases right through the squirrel and about 1/3 of the
BB> squirrels run for a bit before folding up. Where I shoot, a squirrel
BB> that can run 50' is often lost. I need to anchor them.

Lucky you. I killed about 20 squirrels with my little Remington M33 single-
shot bolt action rifle and W-W .22 CB Shorts before a busybody neighbor (one
we are having a "feud" with ever since they were illegally burning trash and
about to set their house on fire and I called the Fire Dept - whew! next
time I'll *LET* them burn their house down) called the cops and reported I
was "discharging a firearm within city limits". The cops arrived -
fortunately it's a small town, with small-town ways - advised me not to use
the .22 in the yard (even with ultra-quiet CB caps), but to get a pellet
gun. So I'm using a Crosman .177 CO2 rifle right now, while saving up to get
an RWS in .22 - noisy, yes, but "legal" in town, where the .22 CB caps are
not. Go figure... :-)

Anyway - if you need to anchor squirrels, shoot them in the head. You ought
to be able to do that easily with a Remington 513-T. I had no trouble at all
with headshots using my little Remington and its rather crude iron sights.
With .22 CBs, even if you miss the brain (and squirrel brains are NOT that
big) the shock trauma from the head wound WILL immobilize them. By contrast,
with a solid heart/lung hit they'll often run a good ways - usually up a
tree and then fall out of it, but not always. A gut shot will usually anchor
them, but it's cruel... Shoot them in the butt and they'll nearly always run
off. So - go for head shots.

BB> A friend made a hollow pointing die for me. It uses a 1/64"
BB> drill bit. I have not been able to try it out yet. Have any of you
BB> tried hollow pointing a CB Long?

No, but it's worth a try. CBs use VERY soft lead. Expansion is desireable,
though more (IMHO) from the standpoint of preventing the bullet from
achieving complete penetration (which it will, even with headshots, most of
the time) and careening on dangerously out into the neighborhood.

BB> I tried using an RWS 52 .22 cal airgun. It did a better job on
BB> the squirrels than the CB caps because the soft .22 pellet expanded
BB> a bit. Unfortunately, an airgun of that power is quite loud. Very
BB> much louder than the .22 CB Long.

Well, where *I* live, that's no problem. Shooting an air gun - ANY air gun -
is legal in our town. Shooting a "firearm", no matter how quiet, is not. I'm
encouraged by your statement than the RWS in .22 is more effective than .22
CBs. Excellent!

BB> I tried Remington Sub Sonic Hollow Point .22 long rifle shells,
BB> but the report is much too loud.

Yep, they're apparently regular "target velocity" loads but with a hollow
point. They're great for squirrel-hunting out in the woods, though.

BB> Any suggestions as to how to improve the performance of the CB
BB> Long or other now noise .22 rimfire would be much appreciated.

Just aim for the head...

I have not tried any yet but I think "Gun Tests" did an article and stated
that the CCI SGB - Small Game Bullet was quiet. I don't remember if it
is a hollow point or not. I've also read that if you file down the nose
of a solid round nose bullet, it will tend to expand better. I'm not
sure what impact it would have on feeding in a semi-auto.

CB longs are so quiet in my rifle that I can hear the firing pin. In a
pistol they are louder.
