I can't understand what the appeal of Steven Seagal the 60 year old
movie star as a rookie LEO, on a 3nd rate "reality show" might be?
Does he ever say, "You're in a heap of trouble boy!", while writing
the "perp" out a speeding ticket? HawHawHaw!

He's not a rookie, he's been a reserve office for over 20 years.

There's been several celebrities who have been "reserve" cops. It's
how they used to get a CWP, before the majority of states became
"shall issue".
I like Steven when he's beating people up by the dozens, and pitching
them through windows! I doubt if he does that much working as a deputy
sheriff, but we can always hope he'll body slam a few smart mouthed
ruffians from time to time?
It will be interesting to see how his "reality show" does? His movies
go straight to video these days, and he has trouble getting music gigs,
which is I suspect he's now on "reality TV"?

There are some who don't care for the actor and his movies but I give
him lots of credit because unlike David Carradine from the "Kung Fu"
TV series...Steven's techniques in his early works were mostly real as
he is a true Master of Aikido, 7th dan (degree), and gave us what the
real martial art movements are like and not Hollywoods silliness of
high wire flying and all the rest!
I feel he carried his style to the big screen quite well.
As far as appeal for his new show, Wikipedia reported this:

He gave some useful pointers on shooting techniques. They were
shooting at what looked like about 25 feet. The other officer who was
being instructed by Seagal was shooting groups of about 12 inches or
more. Seagal's group was about the size of a quarter, or a bit less.

Why not ask him? I don't really care for his acting abilities, although his
movies are fun to watch.
The fact that he pulled off a legitimate 20 year LEO career without drawing
publicity to himself is indicative of class and a testament to his
character.
Then there's those who have to pee in the Cheerios.

Shooting slow at the standard police range of 7 yards (21 feet) everyone
that depends on a gun for protection should be able to just about put the
bullets in a half dollar circle. Hard to believe but I have seen some
auxilary police miss gallon milk jugs at that range. They should have their
guns taken away.

such a clown to actually patrol. As for his having had a deputy
sheriff's badge for a couple of decades, that's means nothing. In
many sheriff departments, local big shots and contributors have these
"deputy" badges. They're passed around in many jurisdictions like
tootsie pops.

Regular cops aren't much better. In fact, most are worse.

I could be wrong, I don't think those reserve deputies actually
patrol. They didn't where I grew up.
They were used as extra security at the county fair and similar
events, traffic control for parades, standing in the back at church
bingo night, etc.
Somehow I can't picture him doing very much of that.

Hollyweird types probably don't spend but six months working. Seagal's
works probably don't take but a few weeks to shoot.
Yes, fun. The only one I watched was "Exit Wounds", but it was as much
comedy as action, the comedy being deliberate.

I'm not sure what it's like in Jefferson Parish LA, but around my area a
"Reserve Deputy" is called a want-a-be. Reserve Deputy's are not allowed
to carry, and all they do is direct traffic during parades.

In most jurisdictions..Reserves do exactly that..work the street.
But..when needed..they do indeed work security etc etc as they either
work for free, or at a reduced rate of pay.

Around here they use contract security (rent-a-cop) for that.

Every jurisdiction is different.
In some, they are part time, some are unpaid volunteers, and most handle
minor issues like property damage only traffic accidents.
In the infamous Joe Arapio's Maricopa County, the "Sheriff's Posse",
they handle peak time situations like patrols during Christmas shopping
at malls. They are armed and have full arrest authority.
