How does this compare with the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire? In
particular, is there a distance where the relatively flat trajectory
of the .17 HMR would make it fairly easy to hit a woodchuck, but the
bullet would lack energy for a humane kill?

There is not much difference between the two

I have been mightily impressed with the out of the box accuracy of
several 17 HMR rifles - Ruger and Savage in particular. The 17's
trajectory is flatter than most if not all 22 WMRF rounds and the
"Hummer" makes small critters to smaller chunks and larger vermin are
simply turned inside out. A buddy of mine shoots ground squirrels in
a northern California community where the 17 HMR has replaced the 22
LR because the highly frangible 17 caliber bullets present little or
no ricochet risk. There are a few newer 22 magnum rounds loaded with
such bullets but most magnum ammo is not designed to completely come
apart on varmints. If you already own a 22 magnum you may be stuck
shopping for a load that is both highly accurate and highly effective
on varmints. But if you have yet to buy a rimfire pest rifle buy a 17
HMR.

# You guys are aware of the HMR 17 Recall notice aren't you?

I saw this in the latest Rifleman. It's pretty weird to declare ammo
unsuitable for semi-autos, and to also decide that an entire caliber of
rifle has to be yanked. The only thing I can figure is that the actions
can pull the cartridge out before the pressures have dropped to a safe
level.
I'd love to find out what the whole story is on this one.

OH GOOD ! Now, maybe Remington can put those unused resources toward
manufacturing more UMC .380 Auto ammo ! < grin >

If Big Green doesn't want anyone using Remington ammo in other makers'
17 HMR rifles or anyone elses' ammo in Remington 17 HMR rifles I
predict they'll get their wish. Someone is going bonus-less this
Christmas...ouch! Haven't seen a cockup like this since the 9mm
(rimmed) Federal.

Law school grads? "Product Liability" scares the crap out of anybody
who makes anything. I'll rant about the Toyota recall to anyone, but
I suspect not here.

I can handhold 223 with bulk bullets and Blue Dot powder allot cheaper
than 17HMR.
223 shoots allot flatter and hits allot harder than 17HMR.
What does it all mean?
17HMR is for those who do not want to reload.
