Does anyone have a copy of the Lee Reloading manual handy? I am looking for
heavy loads in the .45 Colt for their 300 grain cast bullet. The intended
launch platform is a Ruger Blackhawk.

The only thing mine shows is "300 Grain Bullet" which he says is "any
reasonable bullet" lead, jacketed or solid.

HS7 min/max 9.4/11.0
HS6 min/max 8.4/9.0

Good luck,

George take your question here. Chances are good you will connect with
numerous other Ruger shooters using the same bullet. Might be a good
idea to mention what powders you have on hand and whether you are
shooting a gas checked or plain based bullet. I don't have the Lee
manual in front of me but best I recall they didn't list the 300 gr
bullet for 45 Colt. Some of the manuals that have "Ruger only" loads
might. Best I recall and hopefully I'm wrong the Lee manual lists the
300 gr bullet for 454 Casual.

I made up this load, but it gives great accuracy in someone else's old
surplus 1917:
6 gr Unique 300 gr cast.

Clark, is this load in a 45 Colt case or the 45 ACP/Autorim the 1917
was made as? Many folks, some of whom may not be aware of your
experimental departures from published data, find the difference
significant. Happy Solstice!

Weren't some of the 1917s made for Canada originally chambered in 45
Colt?

I'd love to have one, it would complement my Dad's 45acp.

That ought to be a pretty good manstopper too. Bit stout though for
many 1917s

Look for a Colt New Service, that's the commercial model that the Colt
1917 was made from. Had lots of chamberings, .44-40, .38-40, .45
Colt, .455, probably .476 Eley. There's a new book out on them, I
don't have it, though. And you're going to pay collector's prices for
anything with the pony stamped on it.
