I went into the store yesterday and concluded it is more of a place for
soccer moms than folks into the shooting sports (with the possible exception
of clays as there were boxes of clay and lots of shotgun shells in stock).
The gun area is much compressed since it was Galyans, only long guns are now
being sold and the selection is limp. Also, the ammunition selection is
very limited for a store of that size, e.g., no 45-70 gov. or Marlin .450.
Galyans at one time had a wonderful selection of fine O/U shotguns including
engraved Brownings etc. All I saw in a quick glance was Stoeger (around
$300-400) and Savage. I also asked about Kershaw speedsafe knives and they
had a single Blackout. When this was Galyans they had Scalions, Chives, and
Leeks plus Blackouts and other Ken Onion designs. A soccer mom store
competing with the Sports Authority over the $300 baseball bat market (an
Easton "Stealth" marked $299.99). My wife handled some of the men's shirts
(priced to compete with better department stores) and admired the fabric
("it should be cool and easy to iron") and I think they have a decent if
slightly overpriced selection of fishing gear (all jumbled together without
even the logic of fresh, salt, spinning. fly, casting, being apparent.
Overall, blah....

The grand opening in Las Vegas is this weekend. If they had any sense they
wouldn't do it on NASCAR weekend.

Those of us with a Cabela's Store just up the road really do feel your pain!

Oh yeah, and they are not dog friendly either. Threw me and my Lhasa
Apso pup out. No signs either. What sort of a sporting goods store are
they??? The store was near Wilmington, DE. They won't get any of my
business.

Dick's sucks. Gaylans was a great store, really. Dick's is a run-of-the
mill operation in every respect.

Now don't get too smug...
My nearest Cabella's is an hours drive away.
Galyan's, Now Dicks, was 5 minutes
But 2 Gander Mountain are 5 and 10 minutes away.
And Spotmans's Guide Warehouse is 15 minutes away.
I'm going to miss the gun / archery people at Galyan's who have moved on
since the changeover.
They were knowledgeable.

Same here in metro-Atlanta.

I was going to go early to the "grand opening" this morning, but decided I
had better things to do with my life. They not only dumped all firearm
handguns, but all pellet handguns as well. I bought the last Crosman 2240
last month there for $39.99. Of course, they carry all manner of paintball
and airsofts out the wazoo. I haven't figured the difference from a
philosophical/political standpoint.

My assessment as well is that all they are is an upscale Sports Authority.
I'll take them up on their loss leaders, but that's about it.

Galyan's tried to have knowledgeable people run the departments...
Dicks doesn't care.

This is the major philosophy difference.

Most Dick's won't have a salesperson in the hunting/gun section.
You'll have to go to the service desk and ask for assistance.

Only good thing that happened at Dicks for me. Just before they stop
selling handguns, I was sent a 50% coupon for any one item in the
store. I bought a sweet H&K full-size 45 acp at half price. They
tried to argue that it wasn't meant for firearms, but the coupon
didn't have any restrictions. So I got a great gun for 50% off!!!!

Hooray for me!!!!!!!

That's appears to be true also Randy.

What I was trying to ask was, what's the difference between carrying
paintball/airsoft handguns and not carrying pellet and powder handguns?

We're getting a Cabelas near Denver. And then there's Sportsman's Warehouse,
Big 5, Garts, Gander Mountain, and lots of pawn shops... :-)

Best of all, I don't live in Denver. :-)

I *really* like Sportsman's Warehouse. But the guns are all behind the
counter, so I sometimes go to a Gander Mountain where the rifles are
out in the open. The Cabelas we've got is 70 miles away so it's no
casual visit.

On the other hand, Sportman's Warehouse has the ammo out there on the
shelves like a supermarket, :-) And it is only 10 miles away. Gander
Mountain is about 25 miles. The new Cabelas near Denver will be about
15 miles or so from my house.

The Dick's in Fair Lakes, Va is the same way, more than half the ammo
is gone, and there is NO .22 target or Match any more.
The handguns are gone, the long guns, going, lots marked clearance.
only a few gun safes, and what they have are mostly the Cheap brands.

Plus who told them how to set up a store, they moved all the sections
inside the store, the funniest one is that Baseball is where the
men's ware was, so baseball now has two changing rooms. and men's
ware is were camping and hiking was, has none close.

There is the new Gander Mountain in Fredericksburg, Va and still got
Green Top near Richmond,Va.

Dicks now there is a store that lives up to its name. I have one here in
Denver (Lakewood) where the old Villa Italia mall once stood that they
changed it from Gaylans to dicks and they got rid of all the Handguns and
only have the most boring rifles left. But the prices are remaining high
though. I will just go to Sportsman's Warehouse from now on. They seem to
care about the out doors and not just when you drive your SUV to the coffee
shop on poetry night.
