Centipedes -- god awful smell?

Pretty sure I've finally solved this mystery and looking for confirmation -- a horrible smell in my house, only in spring/summer and especially when the soil is wet. I live near a woodland area.
So, last year I concluded it was the soil because I could smell it gardening.
Than, last week, I was in the shower and there was a centipede on the tub floor about 2" long and black in color.... more »

Transplanting Bird of Paradise

I have an old BP that has made beaucoup pups over the years. I wanted to transplant it -- them -- to create a privacy screen between me and neighbor (where I had huge hedge removed).
My wonderful landscape guy -- not regular gardener -- nixes the idea. He says it is too warm to move a BP now. Something about the roots extending way out; they would have to be cut; the BP won't like that because the roots contains water, which will "leak" out and the BP will not transplant well. Were any of you NG members in touch with her? She is/was in Canada, and always offered tons of seeds that she saved.
Hadn't heard for a while, so send an email which bounced. I don't want to think the worst, so inquiring if anyone else has heard.

I've gotten free mulch - shredded trees - from the power company, but it doesn't keep the grass supressed in the flower beds.
Would bark chips work better, because they're heavier and block out grass and weed growth?
