Centipedes -- god awful smell?
Pretty sure I've finally solved this mystery and looking for confirmation -- a horrible smell in my house, only in spring/summer and especially when the soil is wet. I live near a woodland area. So, last year I concluded it was the soil because I could smell it gardening. Than, last week, I was in the shower and there was a centipede on the tub floor about 2" long and black in color.... more »

Transplanting Bird of Paradise
I have an old BP that has made beaucoup pups over the years. I wanted to transplant it -- them -- to create a privacy screen between me and neighbor (where I had huge hedge removed). My wonderful landscape guy -- not regular gardener -- nixes the idea. He says it is too warm to move a BP now. Something about the roots extending way out; they would have to be cut; the BP won't like that because the roots contains water, which will "leak" out and the BP will not transplant well. Helen Foss
Were any of you NG members in touch with her? She is/was in Canada, and always offered tons of seeds that she saved. Hadn't heard for a while, so send an email which bounced. I don't want to think the worst, so inquiring if anyone else has heard. HB

Dying Acer Advice
Hello I bought an Acer (Japanese maple) last from the garden center which had two lead branches that weren't connected above the soil line. This year the leaves have started to form and the plant is really growing well on one of the two leaders (as you can see from the pictures) however the second leader the leaves have shrivelled and are... more »

Best pattern to plant 2 varieties of tomato plants?
I have a 4 x 6 matrix of spaces to plant 2 varieties of tomato plants with somewhat varying exposure to full vs almost full sun. What pattern is best, checkerboard, or alternate rows/columns?
