Hi Fred,
Although I personally enjoyed seeing the photo of such an interesting
species (which you attached to your original post in theis thread), I
wanted to let you know that there are people out there who get extremely
upet with people who attach images as attachments to their postings.
Although I was able to "see" the image with Netscape, not every one can
(don't ask me why, wish I knew). As a result, all they see is gibberish.
In some locations, people get charged a lot more (i.e. by the byte) for
internet access than in the USA. Moreover, it also seems that they have
a limited ability to screen out the downloads of usenet postings. As a
result, they get *everything*, whether they want to or are able to read
it or pay for it or not.
I couple of months ago, I witnessed a major gang-flaming episode by
British users in uk.rec.gardening, against a poor Spanish fellow whose
only crime was that he asked for help to identify a plant and (like
yourself) attached a binary image to the post. I've never seen such
rudeness and viciousnes on the internet before. I was pretty shocked and
I tried to come to the person's defense, but the depth of rage was
remarkable. Their basic message was: "there are usenet locations where
binary postings are allowed, but not in non-binary newsgroups."
Probably/hopefully, the likelihood of your getting attacked in
rec.gardens for something like this, is a lot les than had you done this
in uk.rec.grdening. Rec.gardens is a friendlier and more easygoing bunch
of people, whereas uk.rec.gardening....well lets just say they have
rules which are not always easy to see, and there is a group of people
who enforce them ... welll... just a bit too gleefully for my tastes.
Don't get me wrong. It was a really neat picture, and I thank you for
sharing it with me and anyone else who was able to see it. But I believe
the "officially approved" approach is to place the picture on your
web-page (as an image or a downloadable file), and place a link to that
item in your post, so others can come to your site to look at the photo.
IMHO, this sort of policy isn't very helpful to people without a
website, but this is what I have been told.
Good luck,
David Deutsch
