Sophisticated garden design software seems hard to come by. In the
Windows world, does anyone know of programs which provide
time-advance, 3-D viewing of designs? Adding to database of
plantings? Essentially a real CAD program plus the features that
gardeners would like? Has anyone used Gardenview, which claims to do
this and more? Any thoughts or (better yet) real experience would be
appreciated.

LandDesigner for Windows by Green Thumb Software has some nice features for
landscape design. It's essentially a specialized CAD program. A library
of symbols lets you place symbols for trees, shrubs, groundcovers, etc. plus
hardscaping features. With 12 layers, you can overlay different years to
see how a site will develop over time. I used it for a plan for a 5 acre
site and found it very nice to work with.

The version I have has While Flower Farm's plant database. You can search
for suitable plants by a number of different criteria. You can also add
your own items to the database. Very nice feature. As for 3D, well, hey,
it was $32 at Best Buy, what can I say.

A different approach is taken by FLOWERscape by Voudette. Strictly a
flower garden design program, it uses scanned photographic images which
you can place in your border. You can view your garden through the months
and things will go in and out of flower. (Daffodils even show their
familiar ratty leaves in June!) Very pretty program. Requires 256 color
SVGA. It also lets you select plants by height, color, flowering period,
etc. You can't add to the database and so far the plant library is fairly
limited (150 plants) but there's more on the way. Under $50 from PC
Connection.
