We have tree in our front yard that has a light pastel green fungus (?)
growing on the trunk that comes up about 2 feet. Tree seems healthy but
wondering if there is anything I should do to get rid of it.

You may want me to tell you the kind of tree it is but I do not know - I am
a novice gardener who grew up in apartments and now own a house ;^) I want
to say a red maple (/): it has primarily red leaves which turn to a red and
green leave later in summer. It stands about 20 feet tall - if that helps.

thanks
Todd

Not fungus exactly-- lichen, and perfectly harmless. If it bothers you
aesthetically, copper will kill it.

You sure it's not moss?

The figures looked more or less human. And they were engaged in religion. You could tell by the knives (it's not murder if you do it for a god).

It is most likely a lichen -- perfectly harmless and, to me
at least, aesthetically pleasing. Don't worry. It's a part
of nature.

Lichen is actually a symbiotic association of a fungus encapsulating an alga.
It is very flat, and doesn't have any roots. Moss is velvety, and has tiny
little roots.

Personally, I would enjoy the biodiversity, and leave it alone, whatever it is.
It won't hurt the tree.

Sounds good to me everyone ;^) I will leave it alone and I agree, its a
great pastel green color and it enhances the overall look of the tree. Just
wanted to be sure it wasn't harmful.

Thanks all!

Take a sample of this to your local county extension office, along with
a leaf from the tree. They can tell you what it is, and whether you
need to do anything about it. From your description, it sounds as if it
is a lichen; if so, it isn't a problem.

If it bothers you just wipe off with a gloved hand.
