Can anybody share secrets to Catasetum culture, and
if you know of where they can be purchased? I'm pretty
fascinated by them.

I'm a novice orchid grower, so I just want to be sure
that I can swing working w/them. I haevn't seen any around
for sale, though.

Hi Janice,

I LOVE Catasetums! Almost all are easy growing as well as easy blooming.
On a general level, grow with your Catts, same light and temps. Feed and
water heavily during the growing season. There is a correlation between
this and the quality and number of blooms..and bloomings. You can rest
the plants in the winter, but we do so only if the plants insist..ie, if
they drop their leaves. If not, we grow more or less normally, reducing
food and water to account for the cooler and shorter days. We don't
currently carry them in inventory, sorry, but if you find seedlings,
snap them up! They grow fast, and a 2.5" pot will probably bloom in 1-2
years. -Rod-

They're supposed to be pretty easy growers...water and fertilize
very well when they're growing and fattening their pseudobulbs.
Water them little or none when they're dormant.

Give them adequately bright light...remembering that the light
level can influence whether male or female flowers develop (less
light = male flowers, more light = female flowers).
