I ventured into the vegie garden world slowly. I have 6 tomato plants and 6
cukes.
Each are blooming like crazy but of the lot of them I only have 1 dang
tomato. They look real healthy and are growing well but bud keep falling off
tomato and not producing fruit.
Cukes are in FULL bloom and look wonderful but not sure what I should be
looking for.
ANY help greatly appreciated!
THANKS

How ot is it? High temps can cause tonmatos not to set fruit but the flowers
just drop off, Too much nitrogen fertilizer can affect fruiting tending to make
lush growth at the expwnse of fruit.>Pollination is not usually a problem, the
gentle shaking of the breezes takes care of that.

Cukes are a different story--normal cukes bear seperate male and female flowers
so you need bees to help out--no bees no cukes unless you take your little
artists brush and transfer pollen from male to female. The female is the one
with the teeny tiny proto cule at the base of the bloom. There are hybrids that
bear all female flowers, makes for a big crop but there must be some boys and
some bees in the vicinity or it's no go.

Your night time temperatures may be dropping too low for your tomatoes
to set. In general, if the temperatures at night get much below 55
degrees F, the fruit will not set... UNLESS you use tomatoe blossom set.
You can get plastic spray bottles of this stuff at nursery supply
places, and I've had a bottle of this stuff that I've been using for
over 15 years! I don't spray anymore. I just spray a little into the
cover and use a tiny artist's brush a dab the solution onto the flowers
while nighttime temperatures remain low. I always get early tomatoes.

I grew cukes one year only but got a stupendous crop. I guess I had a
lot of bees. I found a packet of seeds (!) and planted them in a hill
and canned dill pickles galore, probably a dozen quart jars. The
solution has to be extra salty for the pickles to keep very long, but I
have one such jar left after almost 20 years. One day soon (on the 20th
anniversary, probably, I'll open that jar.
