Subject: Adventures of Lolo -- help
I'm playing Adventures of Lolo on a NES.  I really enjoy the game, or
at least I have so far.  I've gotten through the first 8 floors, and
am trying to solve the first room of the ninth floor.  I'm having a
bit of a problem.

SPOILER WARNING -- If you haven't gotten to the ninth floor, I'm about
to descirbe the first room, and what I think may be the solution to
it.  That solution falls under the heading of being intuitively
obvious, as far as I'm concerned, but just in case, you may not want
to go on.

All right.  The first room of the ninth floor is the room with a long
path of platforms and bridges over a lava flow.  There are two areas
where the path loops -- first, in the middle (which is where you start
out) and second, at the upper left (which is where the only heart on
the board, along with the only monster, are located).  The chest is at
the upper right.  The monster is the guy who rolls at you if he and
you are lined up along a column or row; he's active from the first
moment you move.

The only solution I see:  first, get on the far side of the middle
loop from the path.  When the monster comes after you, you'll be able
to run out of the loop, up the patht to the heart.  At that point,
you'd negotiate the loop around the heart, and run the length of the
path to the chest, keeping ahead of the critter all the way.

My problem:  on those occasions where my control of Lolo is perfect
enough to get him to the heart beofre the roller touches him, he's hit
immediately after picking up the heart.  As far as I can tell, I get
no bubbles, and have no powers to pick up.  At this point, I am
beginning to believe that this level is physically impossible to
solve, or that it is physically impossible for me to solve it with me
reflexes.  The following questions occur:

1)  is my solution correct?
1a)  If not, what trick am I missing?

2)  Assuming my solution is correct, and that I'm not missing
something, has anyone else solved it in the fashion I have described?

3)  If anyone has completed the game, and solved it in the manor I
have described, do you know the password that would get me beyond this
level?  At this point, I truly believe that it is physically
impossible.

I'd rather have a hint/spoiler than a password.  If you're feeling
really generous, and can run the course, and could give me the
password if you only remembered it, I recall the passowrd to get to
the last room on floor 8.  It's

DLYK, if I remember correctly.

Thanks for your help.

The key to doing this room is to get yourself every moment of extra time you
can.  So, immediately after the action begins, you position yourself on the top
center square of the middle loop, facing left (counterclockwise).  The monster
will pass below and proceed counterclockwise.  As soon as the monster passes
onto the bottom center sqaure, start moving left, out of the loop, and up to
the top loop.  Go clockwise around the top loop.  When you get to the top left,
duck PARTLY in to the square where the heart is, and then head straight out to
the right.  (Going only partly onto the square gets you a bit of extra time.)
Then race to the end.  I just did it; make sure you have a joystick you are
comfortable with.

If you give up, send me mail; I can supply a password.  By the way, the
password you gave starts at the last room of the eight floor; it is better to
give the password directly for the room you are requesting help with.

Using your password, I sat down and tried to complete the level
you talked about as well.  Being a poor boy who doesn't work for
DEC... :-)  I was just stuck with the old standard NES controller
that comes with the game.  I thought I had completed that level in
the manner described above originally, but found I just couldn't
cut the corners anymore.  However, I came up with an alternate
method which gave me a little extra lead on the bad guy.

Assuming the above fails, try immediately going up to the top
right of the screen and sit on the Juke Box.  The shell will follow
you up and then start back down.  Follow the shell down to where the
loop is at the bottom of the screen.  I didn't experiment to figure
out the distance you need to maintain from the shell, but it makes
a difference.  If things go well the shell will come back towards
you as you reach the right side of the bottom loop, you can head
up and the shell will pass the loop and continue right.  The shell
may even go all the way to the juke box which will even give you
enough time to get the heart on the top left and make it down to
the bottom loop again.  Its pretty simple to beat the shell from
there.

I recently saw a note about someone who thought LOLO was a great
game (possibly you :-)).  Personally, I found it pretty dull and
solved the entire game in about 5 hours.  I just thought it moved
along kind of slow and once you learned 2 or three tricks about
using the objects it became tiresome rather than challenging :-)
Any other opinions out there?

If I could come up with an interesting disclaimer to stick down here
don't you think I would have something better to do than this? :-)
