We heard that Sega was applying technology from the areo space community,
but I didn't know that the Genesis was involved in this project.

REDWOOD CITY, CA (JAN. 6) BUSINESS WIRE - Sega of America Inc. announced
Wednesday that it will ship in time for Christmas 1993 Virtua Sega, a
full-color virtual reality peripheral for the industry-leading 16-bit Genesis
system.
Supported by technology that until now was only available for sophisticated
research strategy and training by NASA and the military, Sega's Virtua Sega
will bring this advanced technology to the home at a mass consumer price
point.
Sega has been developing virtual reality technology for years and has
already successfully harnessed its power and imagination in the hit 32-bit
arcade game "Virtua Racing," a racing game with 360-degree, three-dimensional
perspective for the ultimate driving experience.
Virtua Sega delivers a feeling of total immersion into a completely
realistic 360 degree gaming world, by utilizing three-dimensional,
stereo-optic vision and depth perception.
"Virtua Sega is right over the technological horizon and Sega will bring it
to consumers in the fourth quarter of this year," said Tom Kalinske, Sega
president and CEO. "Sega continues to be the first in defining 'next level'
technologies that offer great values at a consumer price. And now, following
its vision of innovation, Sega is poised to deliver the next ultimate video
game entertainment experience - virtual reality."
Sega's Virtua Sega will be available in the Fall, with one virtual reality
software title. Current marketing plans include the release of at least four
virtual reality software titles in 1993. The games will feature shooting,
flying, driving and fantasy action.
Sega of America Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of $1.6 billion Sega
Enterprises Ltd., Japan. Sega is a worldwide leader in arcade and home video
entertainment systems.

Not that I've seen many (coin-op) arcade games machines, but when I
encountered this one at a Swedish entertainment fair in '92, I was
stunned. If Sega can make an affordable home system with the ability
to move filled polygons at the speed of Virtual Racing, it would
certainly be a quantum leap in the home market.

Perhaps Matsushita's beast is even better?
