FWIW, I did the update before I saw this, and didn't have any problems as
all (unmodded Wii). So it looks like YMMV on this one.

There's still suggestions that the way Nintendo update the firmware is
a bit buggy and can leave the Wii bricked.

Nintendo has admitted that this can brick unmodded Wii's and will fix them
for free.

Which update is on the Super Mario Bros disk? Coz ever since, Mario
Kart hangs randomly.

SMB will upgrade your Wii to 4.1

My son got this game when I wasn't home and went ahead from 3.3U -
thankfully it didn't disable homebrew but I think it removes the trucha
bug - so far that is not important to me.

Yeh, I found it in the config menu.
Lego Indiana Jones also hangs, and SMB did just once.
I think the console's borked.
