way that software did't break hardware (almost, I remember using the
skip rooms trick in link's awakining that corrupted the save game
files to the point I had to open the cart and remove the battery to
clear it tob get it to boot. Slashdot is running a story about a class
action suit regarding bricked PS3s though all current consoles and
handhelds share simaler vuneranilities.

He's feeling old, and is longing for a time when games just worked,
which old Ataris and Intys still do, while some of the "bricked" ps3's
in the lawsuit didn't self-lock-up due to tampering, but due to software
errors, yet sony says they self shut down and won't repair or replace
them.
This relates to part of my lesser enthusiasm for today's generation. I
bought 2 used ps/2's and hoped they worked, only to find them beyond
repair. Yet a used dead Atari might be repairable at home with the
right bit of know-how, and honestly, most old 2600s still work, few are
DOA.

The only thing you can do is NEVER buy anything Sony makes. It's easy. I do
it all the time.

Well, lets see, I have as part of my collection:
Sony beta vcr
Sony mini-disk recorder
sony psx 1001, 3001 and 5101 (i think those are the three models)
sony ps/2
sony vga monitor (got free)
some sony branded VHS tapes
Ony thing I got new was the psx 3001, and that was a christmas gift back
in the day. Everything else I bought used but working, save the ps/2,
which I bought dead and really cheap, and got working really cheap. But
then, to be a full range video game collector, I have to have certain
sony stock in my collection.

It came with the house. Astroturf is too expensive. Yes, I checked.

Gotta love picking up 30+ y.o. technology, and having it work as good
as the day it was made. That's a serious little piece of engineering.
Yeah, the sounds and graphics are 'prehistoric' by comparison, but
when it comes to gameplay, ease of learning, and reliability, the VCS
is second to none.
