Remember, this was 1980!!!! With 1980 prices!!!!
* Sears sold a 13" color TV, with remote, for $400.
* Toys 'R Us sold "Atari tapes" (sic) for $9.97 each: "Surround," "Space
War," "Blackjack," and "Flag Capture."
* VCRs were top-loaders and practically needed coal shoveled into their
boilers. They weighed a TON. RCA SelectaVision VCR: $750 to $1,000.
* A Pioneer LaserDisc player sold new for $749 ($50 extra if you wanted a
remote control).
* A Texas Instruments 99/4A computer sold in stores for $650 (without
monitor!).
* Some digital watches still sold for over $100!!!!
In the early 1980s, several businesses rented video game cartridges. It was
economical to do so then. When Atari released the _Pac Man_ cartridge for
the 2600, I remember one department store advertising it for FIFTY BUCKS!
That store ain't around anymore.

These were actually a good deal back then. Ten bucks for an Atari game
in 1980? It was a bargain.. I remember when I bought NIGHT DRIVER at K-
Mart in late 81 or early 82 for $18.99, it was one of the cheapest
games they had in stock. I remember when I proudly told my Aunt how
much I got the game for, she said "18.99? IS IT MADE OF GOLD??? IS IT
MADE OF GOLD??" lol

Man, I didn't have a VCR until November 1993 when my Mother in law
bought me one as a wedding present. It was top of the line, too. God
bless her, she was a star in my eyes ever since..

$39.99 was pretty much the low-end going rate for Pac Man when it was
first released.
GREAT THREAD, I'd love to see more of this sort of thing here.
It's interesting how prices for technology based items really have
dropped over the years. Well I guess there's nothing amazing about
that, as production costs decrease, etc. But consider that we were
paying $25-$30 typically for 2600 games in 1982 or 1983 makes $60 XBOX
360 games seem not so bad. Well ok I take that back, I still think $60
is too much. :)
Right now you could piece together a getto HD setup for like $400. You
can get DVD players for in some cases.. less than the cost of a DVD
Movie. Digital Receivers (albeit crappy ones) for under $100? LCDs for
$300 or $400..its amazing how some stuff has really fallen compared to
what we used to pay. Who'd have thought in say the early 90s that you
could build a pretty decent PC in the future for $400 or less?

Yes, in the fact that both are round and employ different sort of
lasers.. Otherwise when you take into account how they you know,
actually work.. then yeah-- completely different. Kinda like saying
the space shuttle and the same because they both have wheels and go
forward.

Sorry got clipped, should read "space shuttle and [insert humerous car/
wheeled object analogy]"

When I was a kid, I used to visit an older friend's house, who had a
projection TV with a 100" screen and a laserdisc player. This was
around 1992. I swore on my honor that when I was an adult and had my
own place, such a setup would be mine.
Now that I'm an adult, have my own place, it astonishes me to think
of how easily I accomplished my goal. It took me far less money and
effort to create my system, compared to what my friend must have invested
in the late 80s. And to top it all off, my HDTV and Blu-Ray setup would
cream what he had back then.

> LCDs for $300 or $400
Are you referring to LCD monitors or TVs? Monitors have dropped
noticeably and dramatically from their debut prices, but the price drop
off of HDTVs - plasma, lcd, dlp, etc) has not seen the same drop off
since their debut. Other market forces seem to be keeping their prices
comparably high.
In comparison, I saw the first blu ray and HD DVDs at up to $1400 last
Christmas, and I just a week ago saw a Sony Blu Ray DVD at Best Buy for
$899, so that technology has experienced a roughly 1/3 price drop.
jt
That's what makes the PS3 such a great system: it is, in addition to
being the most powerful videogame console on the planet capable of
playing the most games of any other console on the planet, it is also
a fully functional Blu-Ray DVD player.. all for only $699.
Which brings me to my next point. I was out shopping the other day,
and noticed an HD-DVD "add-on" for the Xbox 360.. AN ADD-ON??? BWA HA
HA HA HA... you mean to tell me the X-Flop three-shitty doesn't even
play HD-DVD out of the box?? ha ha ha.. what a joke.
PS3... it's got the most going for it.
> Which brings me to my next point. I was out shopping the other day,

Actually, it can't. Not just the console itself, but current-gen
HD-DVD drives aren't able to transmit data at a fast enough rate
to play 360 games. Standard DVD drives, on the other hand, work
just fine, since the games are on DVD.
Chalk another one up for the PS3. ALL PS3 games utilize Blu-Ray
technology.
... for what? Or more correctly, for what purpose that couldn't be
reasonably accomplished with a DL DVD?
--
Aaron "Blu Moon" Bossig
Obviously, Blu Ray can hold much, much more data than a DVD. The
system NEEDS to run the games off Blu-Ray... DVD would be inadequate
to keep up with the PS3's radical cell technology, the raw power of
which is not even being close to being fully understood - Blu Ray is a
medium which will allow the cell processing go grow with.
Space Boss, you flew out of the box, spiralling out of control again.
This thread, which you started, was on prices and technology, and how
the two have progressed since 1980. I made a comment on how one tech
bracket has not seen a price drop, and demonstrated how a related
bracket has already had a very tangible price drop in a shorter time,
and you grabbed ahold of this one aspect, and used it to diatribe how a
current generation console is better than a competing console.
You stated earlier that you like to think outside the box, but once
again, you ignored the box and again ignored the forum. This is a
classic gaming forum. Take your Sony fanboy tripe to someplace where it
can be worshiped, where other fanboys can consider you the god you wish
you were (as in Bass Guitar God).
You like to play Plonko so much, you ought to be a contestant on the
Price Is Right. Wait, that's Plinko. Oops. And relevant to your
threads original topic, with regards to your spiral on the ps3, I will
say that the Price Isn't Right.
Now get the mother f__k back on topic!

Space Boss is right you know, Blu-Ray on the PS3 will take off and be
so much sucessful like UMD movies on the PSP...
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, I remember those ads... At one time I used to go to the public
library to look at them for a good nostaglia trip.
The Atari carts were (I recall) about $25-30 which back then was more
like $50-60 today. Seems easier for people today to be able to afford
a Xbox 360 than it was for a ColecoVision back then. Might be wrong
with the economics but to me as a kid they "were" too
expensive...especially with my working parents only being able to buy
them when they can rarely afford the games for a child.
I bought a 26in LCD 720p TV for my Bedroom roughly 2 years ago for
$599. You can get LCD tvs that size pretty regularly for $400 if you
look and I've even seen some specials on 32in LCDs at under $400. Once
again not saying we're talking high quality here, but the
'Westinghouse' (ie Korean) LCD I have is pretty nice at that price and
definitely better than a clunky 25in CRT that would have cost you
considerably more in 1985. As for the others, I'm not sure.. prices
seem to be falling across the board for just about everything. Some
technology more than others, but I bought a 1080p 61in LCOS (DLPesque)
Set earlier this year for just over $2k. Thats significantly cheaper
than what DLPs would have cost a few years back. Its still cheap
compared to 80s tech/prices which is I think the focus here.

Your 1st gen players are always expensive. The first DVD players were
close to the $1k mark that march, but I bought a '2nd gen' one later
in 1997 for $599. So you'll always see a big drop off. Bluray was
pretty cheap out of the box if you consider the PS3 selling for $599.
God knows your aren't likely to play games on it :)
It's a good DVD/BR Player, its a terrible game system right now.

And you wonder why people fucking flame you.
You know, I was tempted to reply to our resident idiot/troll, but can
you honestly imagine someone who has his level of 'Video Game
Knowledge' (ie almost none) is going to be capable of grasping any
sort of logical argument on disc size vs. actual game quality, etc?
Not only is he rolling his normal brand of general ignorance, its
wrapped up in 'PS3 is da best!' fanboyisms which makes it infinitely
more stupid than normal. Hell, I'd imagine he's only a 'Sony should
put M-Network games on its online store!' away from creating the
dumbest video game related post of all time.
I recall getting $50 (which is like $5,000 to a 7 year old) and going
down to radio shack and buying 'Empire Strikes Back' and 'Berzerk' and
that was the $50. I guess the worst price point in history might
actually have been the 16bit era with games like Strider (Genesis) and
Street Fighter 2:CET (SNES) running up to $70.
For telling the TRUTH: Xflop three-shitty can NOT play HD-DVD's. PS3
plays Blu-Ray (which is superior to HD-DVD, by the way), right out of
the box. Lots of people get flamed for telling the truth it is.
Jack these are not my opinions, they are FACTS. All of this... coupled
with the FACT, again, that PS3's online service is 100% free makes the
choice pretty clear, doesn't it?

It is my opinion that the DVD format really took off when the PS2 was
released (and of course, the Xbox as well). Since SO many people had
these systems anyway, and that they could play DVD's, millions
switched over to the DVD format. Myself included in 2001. The PS2 was
my primary DVD player for years until players really dropped. I
imagine it was the same scenario for millions of others.

The games are pretty impressive. I played "Resistance Fall of Man"
last night just before going to bed.. BAD idea. This is such a wierd
game. I dreamed about it <shiver> One game I do NOT care for though is
Virtua Fighter 5. The women are wearing too many clothes and thier
titties don't bounce. This is unacceptable in a fighting game in this
day and age.. ESPECIALLY in hi def!!!! sheesh..

It's a whole new ball game now. There is a LOT of money circulating
now due to the internet mostly. And with things like ebay.. anyone can
make money these days if they put thier minds to it. Back then, you
went to work, got paid a certain amount every two weeks, and that was
that. It was indeed truly the dark ages.

Yes, well... Enjoy your ghetto 20" 'aich-dee-tee-vee', the HD part of
which your human eyes won't be able to pick out (let's not even get
into the fact that you are using composite video). You really can
only appreciate what HD has to offer at 36" and above (and even then
I'd say 42" is the lower limit). Your $700 game system loaded with
all this cell processor honey goodness is coasting in neutral on an
overpriced $400 LCD. It's like being the proud owner of a Camaro
while your mobile home is falling apart and needs a new paint job.

We'll have to do something for the occasion. Call it RGVC's "New Low"
day.

Allright, I think we've indulged your off-topic digression long enough.
At this point, the proper thing to do is take the discussion to e-mail,
or better yet, to rec.games.video.sony. I believe you'll find the topic
content and level of discourse more to your liking.
Perhaps the real test is cost/hours of enjoyment.
It's a defining characteristic of the inept that they don't *know* they're
inept.
Although God knows enough people have pointed it out to SB.
Maybe introduce a new term into the Usenet Lexicon: The Space Boss
seal of Excellence in Stupidity.
Of course, every day seems to be a 'new low' in that regard of recent.
I suppose that's true, of course that's also relative. A new game
might take days to unravel wheras many 2600 games pretty much showed
you everything they had in 2 minutes. But we didn't know any better so
that was fine. Doesn't mean I didn't spend more time playing certain
2600 games than XBOX games though. I'd still like to see games closer
to a $40 pricepoint, but with expanding budgets and production costs
thats probably unlikely.
Very true.
I especially enjoyed his follow up which totally missed the point by
trying to 'defend' his 'facts' instead of looking at the obvious off-
topic "fanbitch" trolling in a classic games group and why that was
flame worthy.. regardless of what it said. But I guess that's typical,
i'd imagine the folks who have kept those fires burning in the
respective Sony and XBOX groups are probably about on his level.
Dude your baggin' on my HDTV now? This group has sunk to a new low.
Face it, we're from a different generation. Most of us probably had to mow
lawns, rake leaves and shovel snow in order to earn money to buy games.
When parents did buy games it was for special occasions like Christmas. Our
parents also bought houses they could afford and saved for rainy days.
Today it's like the dad buys the console and games for himself and the kids
reap the benefits. And it doesn't matter if he can't afford the system
because there's the EASY CREDIT which didn't exist 30 years ago. How many
people today have multiple cards maxed out and then jump for joy when they
get approved for yet another card in order to purchase that PS3, HDTV and
surround system?
Read in the paper last week where over 13,000 homes in my area have gone
into foreclosure. ARMs go up and idiots who got in over their heads by
purchasing huge homes they couldn't afford crash and burn. Personally I'm
loving it. Everytime interest rates go up, my eMoney markets go up.

Once in a while, my Mom would surprise me. I remember one time we were
out shopping at this mall we rarely went to, and of course, I went
into the game store, and I couldn't believe it... GORF for the 2600.
You know.. Mom's get into the mode of shooting off automatic "NO's",
I'll never forget I said "Mom there's this game I really want.." and
she sighed and said "How much is it...?" WOW.. I knew I had her right
there, because if it was a NO, it would have been a no from the giddy-
up. God bless her she was cool that way sometimes, would surprise me
out of the blue.

RIGHT...

You. don't. get. it.
I was ragging on your fanboyish-ness and audacity to divert what was
a decent thread into a current system war. The newsgroup began
sinking to new lows when you, the self-appointed "savior" of this

"Guaranteed" to last an "estimated" 25 years? Do you have any idea
how that sounds? It's either a guarantee or an estimate-- it can't be
both.

It doesn't have to be outside, but in my area, the exterior antennas
give
far better results.

No, You're being "ganged up" on because of your repeated stupidity, and
asinine postings. I have no problem with your HDTV, I (along with
almost everyone else) I have a problem with you.

Nah, as someone else said, you're getting ganged up on because
your facts are off. But, unlike yesterday, you're not actively
trolling. Actually, I'm glad you got the set, because you're going
to need some way of getting digital signals soon. The Visio isn't
a bad brand... at least you didn't get a Polaroid.

I'm in a major metro area, but I'm *just far enough away* from the
signal that people who use interior antennas don't have much luck. I've
seen several returned at Circuit City and Wal-Mart for that reason. Me,
I'm not even gonna bother-- I'll upgrade to digital cable before the new
fall TV season, and that'll get me my HD.

What is, your fanboy ramblings about Sony?
For info on choosing an antenna as well as if there are HD signals in
your area, try this website:

Fill in your address (I always lie about my name on such pages) and it
will give you a map showing where to point your antenna for certain
stations as well as listing what types of signals there are.
Thanks dude you ROCK!
