Space Invaders MAME conversion

Anybody ever convert a SI into a MAME cabinet??? I've got a SI that needs tons of work to get working properly (board set, CAP kit, power supply, etc.) so instead of finding a working board set, which I'm having a hard time finding, I'd like to turn it into a MAME cabinet.
Any way to modify the monitor mount to fit a LCD in it without having to use the mirror, or would I have to build that from scratch?
Any suggestions for a good MAME front end rather than having to access a keyboard and mouse all the time?

$1500 in dream land maybe. I seen some here in MN for $400-$500 and they
don't sell unless they drop the price to the low $300s
I'm all about keeping them original but if it comes to trashing or keeping
them as much as possible original, I'm for it.
I would suggest building another MAME game first to get an idea what you
like to change on the next one.
As for the monitor. I stick with a tube type. They look better than a LCD
and will fit in the cab a lot easier. I been using old 21" PC monitors that
I take to guts out and mount them directly in the cab.
If you do go the LCD way there are some that are made to fit in arcade
games. Look on ebay or sercah for them with google....they go for around
$500 an up.
Lots of info on the internet.....good luck and have fun.

I was thinking the same thing when I read $1,500. I've seen them listed on eBay for $1,500 but that doesn't mean they sell of that.
The MAME conversion is intended to be reversable. There's tons of room in that cabinet. I won't even have to remove the original board set. And if I could mount an LCD the way I want I won't even have to remove the CRT, just the mirror.

reflective - difficult to replace), pack it carefully in a box, and do
not remove the wiring. Also use a fresh control panel, keeping the old
one in the game. And then, yes, it could be restored some day.

Maybe in a decent retail market - heck I have three Space Invaders
Deluxe uprights all in working condition that need a new control panel
overly that I would let go for $300 for your choice.... I'm even having
a hard time finding buyers at that price. Come fall they get parted out
and the cabinets burnt because I have no room.
