Hi

As Gamymond has answered most of your questions I will try to fill in any
extras that I can think of:

1) defender ROM *totally* different to stargate.defender has paged ROMs

2) in my experience two types of defender:

* Early with 1 PROM on CPU and white (and maybe other colours) ROMs
on ROM board

* Late with 'RED LABEL' ROMS on ROM board and 2 RED LABEL PROMs on CPU

Compatibility is difficult to summarise because I have had all sorts of
unlikely combinations working....

Maybe your best shot is to buy/swap a known, working board set or convert as
detailed on wiretap from another host architecture (Robotron etc).

PSU

I would (and have) replace the PSU with a modern Switch mode IBM PC PSU.
unless you want to be totally original. It will provide you with +/- 5v and
+/- 12v which you require...Best to choose a highly rated supply as some are
a bit weedy especially on the - 5/12v rails.

As for pinouts, they are *very* similar but *not* identical. The particular
difference I can think of now is the I/O (switches) loom has more pins. Check
wiretap for pinout details.

If you need any more help, feel free to E-mail and I'll do my best to help!

Regards

Hi all!

I'm a newbie that just recently started collecting and I just acquired
a cocktail Defender that's in great shape cosmetically but unfortunately
it's been stripped for parts. I would like to restore it to its former
glory but I need some advice...

Here's what it does have:

1. Both control panels.
2. Power supply brick.
3. A mid sided board mounted on the left side of the cabinet (can anyone ID
this?)
4. Wiring harness.
5. All of the original art work.
5. A spare monitor that I got with the machine that's neither a
WG or a Electrohome. I'll get some more #'s off the tube and post it.
6. A ton of cobwebs and assorted debris.

Questions:
---------
Does it use an Electrohome 13" monitor? (A tech at a arcade said a WG 13"
would work also.

What boards does Defender require? I've got a spare Williams mainboard, a
small 2"x4" card connected by a ribbon cable (audio board?) and several
ROM boards (which brings me to my next question)

Since I do not have the Defender ROM board (DOH!), will a Stargate ROM board
work as a substitute for right now?

If Stargate will work in the same wiring harness, can I just hook all the
boards (w/o a monitor) for testing?

What is the power supply's output ratings?

-------------

Any help will be much appreciated!
Wade.

Great, I love Defender cocktails.

Naturally the most important part.

: 2. Power supply brick.

You call 2 instruction labels art work ;-)

I've owned 3 cocktails but never checked out any tech info. Any 13" monitor should
work w/o a problem.

wiretap.spies.com has Williams info that would be helpful. If you don't have it,
get it

=> CPU (there are 2 versions but I don't know the difference)
=> Rom board
=> interface pcb (small)
=> sound pcb

: Since I do not have the Defender ROM board (DOH!), will a Stargate ROM board

: work as a substitute for right now?

Unsure, but the Stargate Rom pcb is incompatible with a Defender cpu (hoping I'm
correct?)

: If Stargate will work in the same wiring harness, can I just hook all the

: boards (w/o a monitor) for testing?

How will you know the stuff is good?

: What is the power supply's output ratings?

I believe this info is in wiretap.

In article <4ovp4k$k...@hole.sdsu.edu>, le...@rohan.sdsu.edu says...

Well those two labels are better than the two lines of text on my Atari Sprint.
:-)

Got it, thanks.

Installed all of those boards last night. The flip out PCB panel is a real
joy to work with.

After reading some conversion info on wiretap, it seems that you can go from
Stargate to Defender but not vice-versa. Someone please tell me I'm wrong!

Well, I'm hoping to hear the boot-up sound to indicate at least the boards
are powering up. (I don't have a meter handy)

Additionally, I did some more work on the cocktail last night. I vacuumed
out the entire cabinet (there were some *really* nasty things in the cab, like
mouse droppings and dead roaches) and checked all of the wiring and fuses
and everything looked good.

Finally I plugged a 75W lamp into the monitor power socket for a test.
With fingers crossed and baited breath I plugged the power cable into the wall
socket...

Nothing. No power from the power supply at all.

Strange, the lamp should come on right?

Back to the drawing board...

PS: If anyone could send/sell me a copy of the Defender service manual
I would *really* appreciate it.
