I have a Ms. Pac restoration project cabinet.
The side art is OK, but when it was converted, the
owners painted over the front artwork by the coin doors.

Is there some sort of recommended way to remove the
top layer of paint, without destroying the artwork underneath?

Any help appreciated,

Russ

PS: any idea of a cost for a Ms. pac wiring harness?

You may want to try 3M Safest Stripper. You can experiment with it on a
blue section to see how long you need to leave it on, just to get
through the first level and then use steel wool to "sand" as necessary.
Long Process. Should work good though.

Hmmmm... I'll have to give that a shot on my Robotron and see how that
works. The Paint stripper took too much off.
However, on my Stargate, the Paint stripper did wonders! Check out the
pictures on my web site under the Stargate Restoration.

From my experience, it is VERY difficult to remove the paint without
damaging the original art. If you have A LOT of patience and spare time
(both of which I'm in short supply of <G>), you can with the right tools.
The right tools are going to depend a lot on how the cabinet was painted,
what type of paint they used, and how well the original cabinet was painted.
I found that for my Stargate, the top paint came off fairly easily. My
Robotron is not being as cooperative, I'm still looking for ways to get it
off so I can make a template of the Art work. One side is history so I'm
using it to experiment with different techniques.

Hello, Russ.

Well, that's exactly what I'm up to right now -- removing paint from a
Ms. Pac cabinet. The *entire* cabinet.

A lot of the success will depend on the paint, how heavy it was put
on, and how clean the cabinet was when it was painted.

In my case, it was a heavy enamel paint, and the cabinet wasn't either
prepped right (scuffed with fine sandpaper) or wasn't very clean.

I use a very heavy duty putty knife, sharpened to a razor edge at work
:) and a heat gun.

I warm the paint with the heat gun, and then start the paint peeling
off with the putty knife. After I get the full width of the blade
started, just pushing it along causes the paint to lift off. I sure
love yellow paint chips all over my shop!

It does take a few flecks of the cabinet artwork off, but the way I
figure it, even marginal Ms. Pac artwork beats ugly canary yellow
paint any day :) And with a bit of luck and some close matching touch
up paint, it may someday look a lot like original art.

Doing the same to a mercy-buy Block Out that was a Defender
originally. The cabinet is in so-so shape, but there too, Defender
art is better than plain black paint.

Anyone else seriously into re-conversion have any luck or tips on
paint removal? I did try chemicals / solvents once, but my experience
was it damaged the artwork too badly.

Good luck, let me know how you come out.

my girlfriend took out reasons and took off that paint ,piece by opiece. this
