My DOT gives itself credits intermittently, but when it does it goes on for
half an hour. The sound is my biggest complaint, because I don't leave it on
long enough for burn-in to be an issue. I have disconnected the plug going
to the coin doors (and test button, etc.). Is there a way to turn of that
sound or make it stop?

Does it continue to coin up even after disconnecting the plug?
If so, then you probably have a harness or board problem.
On my TRON, I found that one of the switch input debounce caps, had
become internally shorted. I think it was P1 Start. Clipped it and
all was fine. It can be replaced if you care.
