I just recently started collecting and was lucky enough to get my favorite
game as my first. I ordered repro art for the marquee on my machine from
arcadeshop.com and I must say that I am disappointed in the quality.
Compared to the original art the image is horrible. Very dark, cannot see
most of the detail. Is this to be expected? I understand that this stuff is
repro but I expected something I would actually want to stick on my machine.
TIA for your comments.

Thats odd. Arcadeshop stuff is top notch. What game was it for? Was there
any protective material over the marquee?

The game is Tempest and there doesn't appear to be any protective material.

The image is just very dark. So dark you can't even see a couple of the
"aliens" that are pictured.

not everything arcadeshop makes is perfect let me tell you. most of it is top
notch. some of his bezel underlays are on the same level as arcadegrafix.
arcadeshop i liken to walmart. they sell just about everything and at fair
prices. they make some of their own stuff and buy from other vendors for
resale.

the tempest marquee you have purchased was most likely a "b" stock item that
slipped through the cracks. i have purchased these marquees from him in the
past and have been pleased with the quality

email them for a replacement and see what they say. i was unable to get a
replacement or refund for the miserable defender bezel underlay they sell.

Two things to consider:

1) There are (at least) two official production versions of Tempest marquees
out there. Arcadeshop's repro is of the later version which is darker and
has slightly different coloration than the early ones. (It might even have
fewer colors. Atari did that on occasion when a game became popular and
their initial production run of materials ran out-- when they reordered they
took cost reduction steps.) My machine has an 'early' marquee and the
reproduction is definitely 'different', but the repro *is* correct compared
to an NOS "later" version marquee. I'd wager a guess than an NOS 'early'
marquee is probably just about impossible to come up with though, so the
reproduction was based on the latter version.

2) These things *are* designed to be backlit-- hold it up to a window
(better yet, a light box) to see what it'll really look like. When they're
not backlit they are dark out of necessity, otherwise they'd be terribly
washed out when light up from behind...

I think your first explanation is probably what I am seeing.

These pictures will help:

My marquee looks like this:

http://www.fraggersxtreme.com/museum/Images/m_Tempest.jpg

The repro looks like this:

http://www.arcadeshop.com/pics/temp-mar.jpg

I think you will be able to see that there is not nearly as much color in
the repro.

I've noticed differences in the artwork on Tempest marquees too. I
bought a repro from Fab Fan that was so poorly done, the detail was
completely missing from several objects, to their credit they warned
me about it and I bought it anyway since nothing else was available at
the time. Oddly enough, a few weeks later I bought a NOS Tempest
marquee on eBay for only $45. I still haven't applied it since I just
got the game going, but it's one of my New Years Resolutions :-)

BTW Clay, did you get my email yesterday on the Tempest Multigame?

Actually, I was going to say the same thing but figured I'd get
crucified! I got an Asteroids Deluxe CPO from them, the colors are
way off. I also purchased a complete Galaga CP- New panel, new CPO
and new buttons/wiring/joystick. The CPO has different colors/fonts
from my original, it has the wrong color carriage bolts (chrome
instead of black), the button colors aren't even close, and the
buttons and joystick are microswitches instead of leaf.

Sorry, you're not pleased with the marquee, this item along with a few other
items
such as all bezel underlays (which I'm out of and didn't produce) was part
of a buyout
of Fabulous Fantasies artwork a few years back. You may send it back for a
refund
if you do not want it.

Like clay said, Atari produced many versions of artwork for their games and
you can verify
by looking at the part numbers on the marquees.

I purchased a T&F CPO from both Phoenix Arcade and Arcadeshop. The one from
arcadeshop was right on to my original, and the one from Phoenix Arcade was
very different (different fonts, and graphic on the front, etc). Just
wondering if the difference was due to two different official production
cpos?

Actual quality of both cpos is great.

we got our NOS from Callan Hendicks http://www.vidpin.com/

we matched it to one of al gross's (gross games) track & fields cabs. he had
several, but only one in his main showroom. so we didnt look further

afterwards i gave a refund to someone who noticed the difference between our
repro and the original on his. this is the only refund ive ever given on one
and only the second refund ever requested for any piece of art we make.

only answer i can give is that there are 2 versions. one original and the
revision (what we sell). this does happen and is evident in several games out
there.

ill be happy to refund anyones money who doesnt want it.

furthermore, the other repro sold by arcadeshop is made by jason fowler. he is
a friend of mine and does great work. cant go wrong with either one.

of the 250 i made there are about 60 left.

I think that I will actually keep it. If you don't mind me asking, how are
the other Tempest artworks compared to this one? (the side art and control
overlay) Were they part of the same buyout? All of the artwork on my machine
is showing 20 years of wear and I was planning on ordering the others also.
If I were ever to sell the machine (not likely) then I would put the repo
artwork on to try to increase the value of the machine.

After re-reading this message it may have been a little harsh. In reality, I
am just new to this and don't really know what to expect. (and the repo
marquee is in much better shape than the one on my machine!) Also in your
defense, your website picture is an accurate representation of the product.

Thanks for the offer of the refund. I am sure that I will be ordering other
stuff from you in the future!

I figured it was something like that. I have already applied mine and plan
on getting some good use out of it. I was just interested in the reason for
the differences. Thanks for the explanation.

I just bought a Tempest cpo from QuarterArcade.com and it looks perfect to

Was there more than one version of the Robotron marquee? I just got one of
those from Darin Jacobs, looks fantastic, I did notice right off though that
there's some subtle differences, but then I looked on the klov and the repro
looks just like the one on there. My original was printed a bit sloppy too.
Either way the new one looks a TON better than what the machine had.
