The hardware is interchangeable. You can run a Midway CPU board with a
clone Video or vice versa (Clone MPU with...)

I've only seen them run Namco Galaga code. Not sure what came
on them originally tho.

Gallag and Galaga ROMs are interchangeable as long as you get them in the right
sockets! Also, the Gallag has an extra ROM which cannot be removed. It is the
ROM for the 4th Z-80, which is part of what would be the "Custom 53xx" circuit
on an original Galaga.

The only other noticeable difference is the output color resistors. On many
Gallag's, these resistors are slightly different in value and produce colors a
hint off from an original Galaga. Replacing these resistors with the same
values used on a Midway Galaga will cure this problem.

Here are some other notes about Galag I have in my notebook:

There are two boardsets running Galag software. Type 1 has a SNK style edge
connector and uses 7 2732's and one 2716 ROM on the video board. Type 2 has a
unique 44-pin edge connector and uses a 6116 in place of some of the 2114's on
the video board. Also Type 2 has a SIP resistor pack mounted very close to the
edge connector and uses a bizarre 72-pin ribbon cable to connect the video and
CPU together.

Type 1 and Type 2 boards cannot be interchanged. Type 1 boards will swap with
original Galaga boards.

ROM images from each type board interchange, but the whole set must be changed,
not individual ROMs. The switch boot ROM is not the same and cannot be
swapped.

Speed up chip can be used on both types.

Type 2 boards will run Dig Dug without modification (which makes me think Type
2 boards are actually bastard Dig Dugs with Gallaga ROMs). Type 1 boards
require the addition of the UP and DOWN inputs be added to chip 3C.

Flashing Player Start LED drives can be added by populating Q16 and Q18, R133
and R135 on Type 2 boards and lead to pins 16 and T on the edge connector.

I have other information less useful but sometimes needed about these boards.

More info on the color resistors, check jrok's awesome page on it:
