Got a Mario Bros last night. The only sound that comes on is the "running"
sound (analog?). If anyone can point to what IC's are responsible for the
rest of the sounds, or any other tips, I'd be much appreciated. Mario is
one of those games that just needs the sound!

The digital sounds come from the 40 pin custom chip at 5L. The
code for the custom chip is stored in the 2732 eprom at 6K Could be
either of those. Both the analog and digital share a common audio
pre-amp, so given that you can hear the one analog sound that mario
has, implies the audio pre-amp section is working. The few times
I've seen this problem is has been a bad custom chip at 5L. I have
no idea where to get replacements besides stealing them from other
boards. DK3 might use the same chip.

The 8039 at 5L creates the digital sounds, I believe.

Looks like you can use an 8039, which is what comes on the board.
Or an 8049, which is cheaper.

Both are carried by Jameco:

IC,8039 Part No. 51959 Product No. 8039
IC,8049 Part No. 51983 Product No. 8049

Good find Mike. 8039 is a 11mhz version of the 8035 family with
double the internal ram (128) bytes. The 8035 family is used on
DK and Dkjr also for digital sounds.

I forgot to mention in previous post that a busted 11mhz crystal
near the sound CPU can also easily be the cause of no digital sounds.

And to followup, DK3 uses a totally different custom sound chip,
some sort of 6502 variant. This chip is not the same one as
Mario Bros uses as I originally thought.

Thank you Scott and Mike, you guys rock. I'm gettin' the chip and crossing
my fingers. If it still fails, I'll throw the board out my window. :}
