So I ask, what exactly does one win if the console you are rooting for
"wins" a current generation?
- Rich
Look ma, I found: rec.games.video.advocacy again. Maybe some people
will start to use it for their, "my console is better" arguments.
This is what I could never understand with these fanboys either. They
flame, lie, spew and smear each other and their consoles with fervor
for what cause?
I think their lives are simply devoid of anything worthwhile to occupy
their minds and time with something else.
I have both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 and they both have pros can cons.
If one of the cons pisses me off, then I'll express my frustration and
if one of the pros please me, then I'll do the same as well.
But to berate each other and to lie to make their cases is something I
can't understand why some of these people do it. And they do it day
in day out, cutting & pasting all sorts of mindless numbing numbers
and reports.
Doing that once in a while just to inform the forum of something new
would be fine, but they seem to do it thinking that somehow proves
their console's superiority.
It's both comical and sad at the same time.
I wont have to get that penis implant if my console wins!
That is worthy of a ROFL. But I am a bit perplexed at whether or not
you were slamming yourself.
- Rich
I will admit that I have been caught up in it also. I will sometimes
post things, reports, and so on. I find the bulk of my time is
putting up with the Bligs of the world, or XBox fanboys who overhype
disappointing titles as the greatest thing EVAR (Dead Rising and Viva
Pinata come to mind)! It reminds me of the political newsgroups, but
the stakes there are higher. My posting this thread here, was
triggered by my thinking about the MONTHS if not YEARS I have been
hanging out here, and it is the same garbage over and over, even if
the names of the systems change. And I wonder, what for?

I wish advocacy were fully used for the purpose of advocating, and
these newsgroups be focused on just what the particular systems are
doing. Then people can rant and rave, and leave the newsgroups for
related topics.

There is rec.games.video.advocacy, which should be used for fanboys to
duke it out. But people insist on crossposting fanboy flamewar stuff.
- Rich

What did the Giants fans get because their team won the Super Bowl?
You're trying to ascribe a rational reason to a belief system that's
inherently irrational.
- Jordan
Free Arby's for life? 5 tickets to see Kevin Smith's, ahem, "stand-up
act"? A backrub from Emmanuel Lewis? 8 complementary bags of
slightly used cat litter? Former Creed singer Scott Stapp's discarded
jock strap?
Yeah, you mention another good point about the things fanboys do,
which is to crosspost something that has nothing to do with the other
console, or worse yet, they'll post something disparaging about the
other console in the forum they're fanboys in and don't even crosspost
it.
If something negative is found about the PS3, the 360 fanboy will post
it in here, which has nothing to do with the 360 and what's rather
perplexing is that, they won't even crosspost it in the PS3 forum.
Just doesn't make any sense to me. They're are just tards to me.
So, you'll be as happy and ecstatic as the Giants fans if the 360
somehow comes out a winner in the end of some console super finale
match?
And I don't see how being a fan of a particular sports team and
feeling emotional when your team wins the season final match is
irrational. It is a team composed of real breathing human beings who
display their own emotions on the fields, the courts, the rinks, the
pitches and etc.
You can see their anguish and pain when they fail and their joy and
pride when they succeed, all of which as a fan, you share in.
The consoles on the other hand, are just boxes of circuitry and
electronics. And the 360 tends to have many, many shitty ones out
there at that of which were the sole source of pain and anguish I've
felt because a console.
I just don't see how you can equate the two or even try to analogize
one to explain the other.
Is it just me or does anyone find it rather eery, creepy and just down
right unnatural that someone would be attached to and have the similar
sort of emotions and feelings towards a console as others would
towards their beloved sports team?
One things's for certain, if my fucking 360 breaks down on me yet
again, I'll go fucking have a riot in the streets.
Sports teams are made to be rooted for. But videogame systems?
- Rich
While on-target there, doing something blatantly negative about a
console on its newsgroup is akin to trolling, depending on how done.
If you post a message of concern, that is one thing. If you do it, to
tick off people, that is trolling. For a prime example, you have tons
of what Blig has written. That is prime example of what it is like to
troll with negative news.
> Just doesn't make any sense to me. They're are just tards to me.
It used to make sense that one invested a bunch of money in a system,
and you hoped for it to do well. Now, that is absurd, but still
done. Now we have to resort to VGChartz.com as a scoreboard? Someone
shoot Blig now!
- Rich
But VGChartz serves the 360 fanboys when the numbers favor the 360 on their
stats. VGChartz isn't NPD, but they do give a fairly decent showing of what
the sales are doing, though I don't hold them as a sales benchmark for
accuracy, and I have called them on it in thier forums.
> Sports teams are made to be rooted for. But videogame systems?
The entirety of Western civilization is based on this, you could trace
it back to Zoroastrianism really. I just used the Super Bowl as the
most recent example, but you could boil it down to any binary choice.
Ford vs. Chevy, Coke vs. Pepsi, Democrats vs. Republicans. Essentially
any "Us Vs. Them" choice.
There have been psychological papers written on the sense of "The
Other", and that's really what it's all about. It's almost as if we're
biologically wired for it.
- Jordan
You win a nutsack on the chin.
Even money NPD ended up stop letting their numbers out, because it was
being used as a scoreboard. It was arguably accurate. It now has
been replaced with the L33T website that ends in a Z like it is hip or
whatever. I would say, "Shoot me now", but shooting Blig would do
everyone here a larger favor.
- Rich
I understand politics. It is important, and yes, "Us vs them" is part
of human nature. But, do you see Coke vs Pepsi discussed here? About
the only new thing I saw in this area is HDDVD vs BluRay. And that
got dragged into the videogame newsgroups, all the while the Wii ends
up cleaning up in sales.
Speak on the Wii, its sales numbers happen to make 360 vs PS3
arguments absurd. Oh way, I got it, the fanboys have resorted to
calling the Wii a "toy". Be interested in seeing what Power PC gamers
would respond to this comment said by PS3-360 fanboys in response to
another videogame system.
- Rich
The only *possibly* reasonable reward for your console winning is that
the system will likely have a longer lifespan, and get more third-
party titles. (companies will make titles for the system that has the
largest install base). But even this is minor unless there is a
complete blowout. Last generation, when the PS2 completely obliterated
the Xbox and GC, the PS2 owners "won" quite a bit. This generation,
although there are spikes for each company, it is a lot closer, so I
don't think even this will be a factor.
But for the most part the only "prize" is the misguided-feeling that
all the trolling was justified because they "won"
Uhhh, they had the joy of telling beantowners to kiss their ass. They
may not have had the opportunity to hold the trophy but that is
soooooo much better.
Xbots get Fusion Frenzy 2 and PS3tards get a free Super Rub-a-dub
download.
You'll express your frustration if one of the pros pleases you?
The biggest expense in a video game system quickly becomes the games
themselves. I just got a Wii and 7 games for it. The Wii cost $250
and the games $350! I forget what I paid for my XBox360 but I am sure
I have spent a lot more on games for it than the cost of the system
even though most of my games are old XBox games I picked up for
cheap. If the Wii were to roll over and die and the XBox360 as well
and everything went PS3 (or some other game system) in the future
then, well, I'd have to shell out whatever for a new console ("have
to" is overstating it of course) and the games would still cost about
the same and still be the biggest cost.
The thing to do with a console is just wait a year or two and see if
it is going to survive and thrive. Then you aren't stuck with a dead
system that has only a dozen games for it.
I think it is GREAT that there are 3 healthy console systems competing
with each other. It will tend to drive hardware prices down and
provide plenty of variety in games.
Dead Rising was an awesome game. It wasn't a big surprise when I read
that Capcom is being sued over its similarities to Dawn of the Dead.
Viva Pinata is a pretty good game of its type, but is a failure in the
sense that it's much too complex a game for little kids and much too
"kiddie" for adults who would be more successful with its type of
gameplay.

There's a bigger audience here... why shout to the heavens if nobody
can hear you?
The Xbox 360 is leading right now so all the PS3 trolls are hanging
out here. Most Xbox 360 supporters aren't going to be lounging around
in the PS newsgroups so the trolls have to come here (the point of
trolling is to incite the members of a specific newsgroup).
The Xbots know that the PS3 trolls hang out here so they'll post new
messages aimed at PS3 trolls here.
The Giants actually accomplished something that had nothing to do with
how many people liked them, bought tickets to their games, bought
their merchandise, etc. The fans had a sense of pride in their team.
The success of the Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 depends 100% on whether
people like them, buy the hardware, buy the games, etc.
Sports teams are far from a binary choice...
A New York comic named Todd Barry did a bit about hearing two movie
concession stand workers talking about Coke vs. Pepsi with one of them
saying she liked Coke but hated Pepsi with a vengeance. He stated that
it made her feel sorry for her because her body was telling her that
she hated something that tasted exactly the same as something she
loved.
To be honest, though, I love Coke and only tolerate Pepsi, which is
much sweeter. In the end, though, they are pretty similar... similar
enough that the choice is vastly different than, say, Republicans vs.
Democrats.
In the case of New York and Boston teams, the rivalry is much more
community-centric than anything else.
My wife and I are big Yankees fans. She only started watching football
the past few years because she likes sporting competition in general
and I only started watching football this year (too many fucking
rules).
Anyway, she immediately supported the Giants (and the Colts to a
degree since she likes the Manning brothers in general) and
immediately bashed the Patriots simply because of the New York-Boston
rivalry.
She doesn't like the Boston Celtics, either. She doesn't watch hockey
so that's a non-issue for her.
The only things she likes about Boston are Matt Damon, New England
clam chowder and lobster rolls (which are technically Maine).
Oh yeah... she's not a terribly big fan of Dane Cook, either LOL.
I do remember the Atari 8bit computer vs Commodore and others wars
that were out there. Ok, there wasn't a large community to flame, but
there was still rooting, because money was tight when I was a kid, and
I was a fan of Atari. After that, I gave up stop being a hardcore
fanboy. Atari has less of a pull on me now, but still the brand
generated some loyalty to me, in that I owned a Lynx and Jaguar and
actually rooted for them. One's ego I guess would be at stake if the
system of choice loses. Beyond that, I don't get it personally.
- Rich
It's sad that a) you owned a Lynx and Jaguar and b) you let people
know it.
;-)
To be honest the obsession shown by many sports fans is a great deal
_more_ creepy...

Inhumanity, n. One of the signal and characteristic qualities of humanity.
I also own a 3DO, Vectrex, TG-16 (also portable version), NGage,
NeoGeo Pocket, Saturn, and Nomad. I have collected systems, and
usually get them after they are on their last legs.
The Lynx is a way underrated system. It has some decent ports of
arcade games actually, particularly stuff you couldn't get until
recently.
Anyhow, what can I say here, besides myself having an attachment to
the Mount Fuji Atari logo (it is what I have as my icon for Live, by
the way).
- Rich
No, Dead Rising is a decent title, that is NOT a AAA title. It has
camera and some control angles, and the way the save works is
annoying. It was WAY overhyped as "the best game EVAR" by certain
XBox fanboys. If it were released today, it would get in the low 80s
as an average for it.
> Viva Pinata is a pretty good game of its type, but is a failure in the

It is a mishmash of concepts that makes for a cult-like title. It
adds stuff that would annoy people who like one genre or another. It
is cute, but too complex for kids. For a sim fan, it adds annoying
micromanagement and a minigame that is like a poorman's Pac-Man that
is real annoying. But hey, Microsoft now has some mascots it can use
in games. I like sim games. I thought i would like Viva. But the
micromanagement and Pac-Man breeding game wrecked it for me.

How about you want to debate and so on, without being annoying? Nah,
your comment is proof that such individuals want to be "told you so"
jerkballs.
- Rich
> But, do you see Coke vs Pepsi discussed here?
Well not here... but that's only because Coke is clearly superior. :^)
> About the only new thing I saw in this area is HDDVD vs BluRay. And that

HD-DVD and Blu-Ray can at least be played on consoles so there is some
semblance of being on-topic.
- Jordan
If you're talking about the PC fanboys, they have their own sad
bashing technique.
Namely, refer to any console owner as a "console kiddie". Yep, real
mature behavior.
There's a difference between being a fan of something, and being a
fanboy. The former
is merely enthusiastic about something, while the latter is rabidly
enthusiastic to the point
where co-existence with anything else is NOT an option.
Blue Lightning ftw! Actually, I know someone who had both a Lynx and
a Jaguar.
Never had either, but emulation gave me the chance to revisit Lynx
games.

The Wii has seemed to bring this low of fanboyism to consoles. If
people can just accept the Wii as the second console for hardcore
gamers, and get over themselves, things would be a lot better.
- Rich
Definitely Blue Lighting as being way ahead of what consoles did
then. It was slower than Afterburner, but had a lot more stuff
resembling flying. Warbirds would still be playable today.
Oh there were a bunch more on the system to, which I can't recall
offhand now.
- Rich
If I can generate enough interest to resurrect the Dreamcast, Sega has
promised me a $100 Home Depot gift card.
BTW, for those of you playing "Rez" on the 360, you're cheating
yourselves. You simple MUST play Rez on the Dreamcast, in its original
form, for the total experience!
I hate Dane Cook. I guess it makes sense that he is from Boston. I
grew up in NY so I have a natural dislike for all things Boston. I
will admit, I do like the Celtics to a certain extent because their
team consists of 2 of my 3 favorite basketball video game players for
the 2K franchise since 2004 in Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. All they
need is T-Mac and they would be my favorite team (online that is).
Didn't the PS2 version run at double the frame rate though?
- Rich
Which isn't so different from all the hardcore console gamers blowing
off the Nintendo Wii.
One of the most common reasons Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 owners call
the Nintendo Wii a toy or a kid's system is the lack of comparable
graphics.
From that vantage point, PC owners are more than justified in calling
consoles toys.
360 and PS3 owners also like to dismiss the games themselves. People
who don't play games just as easily dismiss video games in general as
a waste of time.
I love Dane Cook because he makes reference to so many pop culture
icons from the 80s. Plus, you gotta love anyone who references Super
Mario Bros. in his set without making fun of it and hums the theme
song to close out a show.
Do you want me to get the gift card or not?
-Eric
Ok, I stand corrected. The Dreamcast version was BY FAR the best
version.
- Rich
:-P
