Span the universe on a quest to save the earth from alien
imperialism. Trade insults with 18 alien races. Explore over 500 star
systems packed with 3,000 planets. Over 8+ hours of interactive audio.
Fight brutal head-to-head spaceship battles with a friend or the
computer in Super Melee, a bonus space combat game.
__
/\ Overview -
>~~'~~~~~~`~~~~

This game is no newcomer to anyone who has been playing PC games
for the last year. Shortly after its release the awards slowly came
flowing in. On the PC, at first glance the game doesn't LOOK like
anything to jump up and down about. However, the music was excellent,
and the depth of the story and characters was almost unfathomable. In
Star Control ][, you start over 100 years in the future. A future where
space travel is now commonplace. However, Earth has run into one of its
first intergalactic roadblocks. Although, Earth has made allies with other
races, a new race, the Ur-Quan are slowly conquering the galaxy. Amidst
the war, a team of scientists lands on a planet far from earth to
discover ancient artifacts and tools. It turns out that this planet was
once used by an ancient race (the Precursors) to build starships.
However, there's only enough elements for one ship. Now, twenty years
later the ship is finally done, you have been completely cut off from
the outside by Ur-Quan forces. Your mission: return to Earth with the
new technology in an effort to beat the Ur-Quan. Upon your return to
Earth, you find that the war was lost....and so the game begins, you
must find a way to free your allies, gain new allies, find out what
happened in the course of the last twenty years, and build up your
material resources in the hope of once again leading the fight against
the Ur-Quan and their allies.

>~~'~~~~~`~~~~

Upon booting Star Control ][(SC2), you will see one of the nicest
intros to a game in existence. Basically, the entire paragraph which
you have just read is presented in Full-Motion-Video(FMV) with all the
graphics rendered on SGI workstations. A narrator lays out the
story line at the same time (the end-game sequence is also done in the
same stunning way). You are then presented with 3 options; New game,
Load game, or Super Melee mode.
Super melee mode allows you to practice your dog fighting skills
against another player or a computer(with 3 difficulty settings). You
and your opponent build a small armada and then (one ship at a time) you
fight your armada against your opponents'. Since this mode is the exact
same mode that you perform all your dog fighting in during the one player
game, it would be wise to use this to practice your skills. The manual
gives an overview of each ship and you can also have an FMV sequence
showing each ship with the narrator describing them in full be played.
__
/\ Gameplay -
>~~'~~~~~~`~~~~

The one player game mode is the heart of the game. I've been waiting
for a good, solid, in-depth game like this ever since I bought my 3DO and
this is still my overall favorite game. I had heard about it on the PC
and had briefly tinkered with it, but not really gotten into it. The
first thing that I was impressed by was the individual characters. When
you come into contact with an alien race, you can converse with them.
The interface is sufficient. The game lets you choose one of several
statements or questions to say to the person(or race) you're talking to
and then they reply. The alien races all have a distinctive voice as
well as a distinctive accent on some of the races. Also, for your
convenience, a marker showing the progress of what is being said is
fully controllable by the user. Therefore, if a character says something
of importance, you can just move the marker back to listen to what was
said again. The depth to which the original PC authors went in creating
this universe is really amazing. Each race will tell you about its history,
major political happenings, what it thinks of something, or even just
some casual conversation.

The next thing that really impressed me was when I decided to do
some traveling and went to the starmap. I truly realized the size of
this game when I realized that all the planets in my solar system
composed only one small dot in the lower-left hand corner of the map.
Basically each dot on the map is a complete solar system, some with 2
planets and some with 10+. Also, each of these planets can have varying
numbers of moons. In order to get resources to build up your ship and
(overall) your strength, you have to send a scavenging lander down to a
planet or moon and extract resources. Meanwhile, these planets may be
unstable and you may find the planet burning with earthquakes happening
constantly during the middle of a lightning storm. Don't worry though,
other races will help you to overcome these problems.

Another thing that impressed me was that, for the most part, I
never turn the music off in this game, its really quite nice. The music
changes depending on your current activities(in hyperspace, on a planet,
whatever). Also, each race has their own music that plays underneath
the sound of their voice(not loud enough to drown out their words
though). Also, gaining allies is not as simple as merely meeting them,
some of them don't have a reason to join, some don't want to, and some
are just to afraid to. But, you can usually rectify these situations if
you give them reason(or proof) enough. Remember, things that you think
may be of small detail can have big implications, routinely talk to the
different races to see if anything new has transpired. Also, after
beating it, I played it again and did things I didn't even know I could
do during the second time around.

I feel as though I really haven't stressed enough how much the
speech ads to the game over just straight text. You can hear sarcasm in
their voices, excitement, depression, whatever. I've hardly ever played
a game where the characters in the game really make you understand them.
This game really made me understand how useful digitized speech is when
used properly. This is one of the best overall games ever created and
the 3DO really gives this game the graphics and sound that the PC didn't
have to bring this title to life. -Steve

Another world, another time. The world was filled with light
and all kinds of creatures and plants dwelled in it. But...the powers
of darkness, who take over the world, appeared there. They called
these powers Azrael. The ground was torn apart, ordinary plants took
on grotesque forms and everything lost its vital energy. The powers
of darkness had the power to control the soul...and alter it. They
created minions of dreadful monsters. Finally the goddess Erald, ruler
of this world, discovered this critical situation. But, everything
seemed hopeless. However she summoned up her greatest strength to try
to defeat the darkness that had taken over the world. Her only defense;
courage, hope, and love.

During the reign of the 16-bit consoles, I never owned one. I
was quite content with my Atari ST. Unfortunately, this meant missing
out on a great deal of innovative role-playing games(usually from the
Japanese). All I had ever heard about games like Final Fantasy and
Shining Force was how great the story was and how long they took to
solve. So, after seeing the great pics from Guardian War( at the time
Powers Kingdom from japan) for the 3DO, my hopes were high that I'd be
getting the same quality of game with all the high performance graphics
and sound behind the 3DO.
__
/\ Options -
>~~'~~~~~`~~~~

You play the role of a golem. These golems have the ability to
have 3 personalities or characters. Basically, you acquire characters(by
finding them or buying them). Then you add them to your golem. Before
entering a combat zone, you have to choose one of the three characters to
be the main representative. Now, you can only gain experience to the
main representative, but you can use the powers of the other two.
Then, later(after leaving a combat zone) you can rotate what character
is the main representative. Meanwhile, you can find other golems.
Ultimately you can use 6 golems or monsters at once in your party(yes,
you can get some of the monsters to join your party), which can (if you
use 6 golems) give you 18 characters to use). Now, this can get
confusing if you like to rotate which character is the main
representative of your party, because you also have to rotate the
weapons as well. During the fights, most of the 'standard' options are
there. Every form of attack (spells or fighting) will show the
character acting out the action. Once you leave a combat zone or
location, your whole party is represented by one character walking on a
huge map. From my experience I've now seen FOUR maps. Two of the maps
had over 15 locations(combat zones or shops) and two were smaller(less
than five locations). This game will take a while to win.
__
/\ Gameplay -
>~~'~~~~~~`~~~~

The game did for the most part live up to my expectations.
Falling short only in the aspects of story line and the manual. The
Story line is fairly simply, at the start or end of a map, your goddess
Erald gives you instructions. However, like I said above, for the most
part, the maps are really big, so the story doesn't really shift and
change around like I had heard that some of the 16-bit RPGs did. The
manual on the other hand is just...almost adequate. It looks as if
someone just got out a Japanese/English dictionary and converted the
manual. Don't worry, its readable (ie..its not THAT hard to
understand). But, there were parts of the game that I couldn't
understand until I finally just figured it out myself. It wasn't that
bad of a nuisance Rather annoying, but a better job could've been done.
Anyone, enough for the gripes. I really like this new 3D perspective
to the game, the graphics are spectacular, and it scales and rotates
during the combat zones with no slowdown. Also, there are 4
configurations for the presentation of the combat zones so you can
configure it to how you like. Every character(and monster) is rendered
as well as the animation's of the actions of the characters. It looks
REALLY nice. Some of the spells are really breathtaking. The sound is
good, and adds to the feeling of being there. It also isn't AMAZINGLY
difficult and although I was new to the Japanese RPG style, I had no
problem adapting to this game. This was one of those games like Star Control
][ for me, I didn't stop playing it until the following morning
(actually I started to head for bed when my dealer called and told me
that Star Control ][ was in, 48 hours later....). This game even
without an enthralling story line is a really nice RPG. The 3D
perspective is really nice looking, the graphics and level of
animation is good, and the idea of the multi-personality golems
really makes this game a unique one. -Steve

__
/\ Overview -
>~~'~~~~~~`~~~~

I grew up on AD&D and computers. Prior to the age of 12, that
was about it. So here comes Slayer for my 3DO. Masters of strategy SSI
and Lion have brought a really hard, fast-paced, 1st person D&D
adventure in style. One thing I remembered about SSI was that graphics
is not exactly their strong point. But, when I saw the manual I
realized, that even if the game didn't look or sound great, it would at
least have the D&D feel that I love. Flipping through the 56 page
manual, I saw lots of charts, spell descriptions, monster descriptions,
hints, you name it.
__
/\ Options -
>~~'~~~~~`~~~~

Well, upon booting Slayer, I realized that what I thought
earlier about SSI may still hold true. The intro is basically 2 animation
sequences that a PC could easily duplicate. Not that it was horrible or
anything, it just wasn't a knock your socks off...blow the house down
intro. Anyway, after the intro is finished, a menu will appear. You
get the options to: replay the intro or credits, Load a saved game,
Choose a pre-generated character, Create a character, or quit.

Choosing a Pre-generated character will allow you to select from
over 20 pre-created characters with all ranges of classes, abilities, and
backgrounds. This is the best way to get a quick start. Creating your
own characters is the where the real heart of the game is. The computer
will go ahead and roll a character for you, then you can go up and edit
just about all of the statistics. These statistics include; sex,
class, alignment, and class(even multi-classed characters are allowed).
You're even allowed to edit their other abilities like strength and
intelligence levels. When you're done editing the character just select
'Done' or select 'Roll' for the computer to make another attempt to suit
your liking. After that, you choose what your character shall look like
and then you can name your character. Then you're off to the dungeon
configuration screen. Customizing the dungeon is quite easy, you have
lots of options to choose from like; number of levels in the dungeon,
how frequent are traps, how much treasure, how much food, what varieties
of monsters you'll find, etc. Then, you enter a 1-9 digit 'seed' and
off the 3DO goes creating your campaign for you.

This game IS an RPG, but by more modern standards its not quite
as in-depth as the ones out on the market for other consoles. There is
no real plot or story, there's no gold to be found, or any non-player
characters(ie..inn-keepers or blacksmiths). What you basically have
here is a really fun medieval arcade game from the first person point
of view. Like I said in the above sentence, you don't find any money or
a shop with which to use it. All the items available in Slayer, you
have to find them. Granted, you'll start with your characters' class'
trademark items(Clerics' cross, Mage's spellbook, Fighters' sword), but
in a nutshell, if you need an item, you have to find it in these
dungeons. No returning to the surface in this campaign.

The graphics in the game are good, especially those of the
monsters. The colors are bright and the animation level is high.
Slowdown is hardly noticeable. Also, like I said before, you CAN
actually run and have a prayer of losing your adversary. This is a
feature that, especially with only Me, Myself, and I as companions that
I found myself using quite a bit. The sound is good, each monster has
his own distinctive sounds and noises. There are quite a bit of scores
in Slayer as that the music seems to be completely different on every
level. Also, the sound is mixed rather well so the music doesn't drown
out the sound effects or vice versa. As I said before, the graphics are
quite nice with the monsters standing out as being the nicest part.
Which is where one of my complaints comes in. There seems to be only
two different kinds of monsters on each level. That isn't really bad as
that some of the monsters require special items to defeat and being
approached by all kinds of monsters would be horrible, but I'm not sure
that this is something that SSI threw in because of that reason. On the
other hand, throughout the game you'll encounter over 30 different kinds
of monsters. These aren't just regular monsters like we've seen before!
These monsters can cast spells, crawl on walls, hang from the roof, or
even jump up in front of you from underground.

When you play Slayer, you'll want the instructions in front of
you. You'll find so many weapons that you'll need to know what they are
and what they do. Also, controlling your character is easy. However,
SSI has also included lots of extras that you can activate from your
controller such as; being able to crawl, looking up and down, looking at
a map, recasting the last spell, and others. You don't really need to
go to all the menus. Wearing and using items is easy, however, this
game is real-time and monsters can attack you while you're moving items
about, so BE CAREFUL! -Steve

One of the most addictive 3D games ever made claws it's way
finally to the Jaguar. All the blood and guts and animations you loved
in the PC version, with over 200 times more color. The Ultra-violent
realism has earned this title an MA (17+) rating.
__
/\ Overview -
>~~'~~~~~~`~~~~

If you are a fan of the PC version but don't own a PC yourself, you
will be very happy with this translation. With 23 levels plus at least
one hidden level, there is plenty of room to play. You get seven weapons
(in addition to your fists), 5 viewing angles of all the sprites (and
the death animations for each), running, and game save options. In
addition this will be the first title to support the Comlynx option
which will let you network two Jaguars for Head to Head carnage at full
screen (to me this is really cool. In normal Split-Screen games you can
see your opponent and what he's doing. Networking like this allows you
complete invisibility).
__
/\ Options -
>~~'~~~~~`~~~~

When you turn on your Jag you are presented with the rather un-
spectacular title screen and intro music. Pressing any of the buttons
presents you with the main menu. From here you can configure Single,
Coop, or Deathmatch game modes, Game Difficulty (There are five levels)
and Level Select (which will only let you select levels you have already
conquered. These are stored in the cart's NVRAM automatically as you
complete them).
Mars and it's two moons were the sites of experiments with inter-
dimensional space travel. But something went horribly wrong and a gate to
Hell was opened. All contact was lost and you, being the only troops
within range, were called in to secure the base. While you secured
the perimeter, the others went in to secure the interior. Screams of
agony followed for a while, then silence. Now you are the only one left,
and it's up to you to finish the Job alone and avenge your fellow
solders.
This game is lacking some options of the PC version. It has less
levels, though at least 3 of them are specific to the Jaguar. Some of
the PC levels were retouched, and some of the wall and floor textures
from DOOM II have been incorporated into the Jaguar version. Though the
speed is quite fast (certainly fast enough to retain the "feel" of the PC
version), you cannot alter the size of the viewing window for increased
speed. The resolution is the same as the PC version on low detail, but
where the Jag version really shines is the excellent color. With 200
times more colors, the depth cueing is virtually perfect, far superior
to it's PC counterpart. There is no music present in the game itself,
only at the end-of-level screens (which are reminiscent of Wolf 3D, and
also somewhat unspectacular). I did not feel that I was missing much;
they sound like the usual MOD files you heard in Wolf 3D, perhaps a
bit better. The sound effects sounded like the PC version to me, but
that is certainly not a bad thing, as the PC version had excellent sound.
Now for the good news; all of the sprites have been crammed into
this version. You can see monsters from all angles, or even sneak up
on them (they don't immediately turn around at your appearance like in
AvP). In addition you can get them pissed off at each other by maneuvering
them into their own crossfire. This is especially effective with the
tougher types, like Cacodemons and the Barons, who are difficult to kill
as it is. The gore is all there. When you plug an Imp at close range
with the shotgun he flies backwards, blood spewing out of his chest.
If they get hit with a very large explosion (like the exploding barrels)
their bodies disintegrate into a gory pool. The death animations for
some of the monsters (including YOUR sprite in two-player modes) are just
great.

/\ Gameplay -
>~~'~~~~~~`~~~~

This is DOOM. Nothing more really needs to be said for gameplay.
It has the feel of the PC version. I have never known anyone who has not
liked this game, if even a little. The Jaguar version is not perfect,
but the gripes I do have are minor.
The controls are adequate, thought the upper-left/right directions
were a bit sensitive. An analog joystick for the Jag would do wonders for
this game. I had some trouble balancing on narrow ledges or picking up
objects accurately. There is a strafe function, which helps enormously.
It is not slowed down like in Wolf 3D; you strafe at normal speed. This
can be good or bad depending on how you like to use it, but I found it
*very* useful for dodging fireballs and trapping Demons in their own
crossfire. =)
The speed goes along at a nice clip. Though it can bog in areas
of high detail, you also have a Running Option, which speeds up your
view considerably (usually eliminating the bog by itself with little
or no effect on gameplay). The difficulty levels alter the number of
monsters in the level, as well as how fast they attack and how hard
they are to kill. Their AI is rather clever. I did not notice it at
first. They don't run blindly towards you; they'll dodge around objects
and hide behind pillars. Middle difficulty is pretty hard as it is. The
weapons and ammo are scattered enough to make it challenging. Probably
the best weapon was the chain saw, which gives a very satisfying muffled
buzzing/grinding as you cleave Demons in half.
The one player game would probably keep me occupied for a while
as it is, but the inclusion of the comlynx option is just the icing
on the cake. With it you can play against a friend in either Coop or
Deathmatch modes for a full screen head-to-head bloodbath. [Note:
Comlynx cables are not yet available. Atari is claiming they will
be available in early 95, and run about $20. Peripherals such as the
Catbox might allow for lower cost cables. Two TV's, two Jaguars, and two
copies of the game are required for Comlynx].
To be honest, if I had DOOM and a 486/33 or better, I doubt I would
be as interested as I am. However I don't, so I am overjoyed that I can
play a game like this on my $250 console. If I had to choose I would have
to say that I probably enjoyed the Jaguar version a bit better because
of the color, even though the PC version has more options (Such as modem
capability and WAD files). -Jeff

/(_ _ 4.2 - Club Drive/Atari _ _ _
\_/_/ -=- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~_/ _/ _/
--- --- --------

In the year 2098 where do you go on vacation? Club Drive of course -
the most exciting park of the 21st century.

Club Drive just opened up after driving was once again legalized.
Driving had been illegal for safety reasons for more than 50 years, until
Dr. Lawrence Phosphorous's breakthrough discovery. In his distributive
processing studies involving safety and smart materials, the doctor
developed algorithms that could be proven to be safe. Thus the driving
ban was lifted for these indestructible vehicles and Club Drive was
born.

Overview -

Club Drive is basically a polygon world to explore. With 4 world/
levels to explore and interact with, and Racing, Tag, and powerball
modes to choose from. Though the promised Comlynx and Voice Modem
capability is missing from Club Drive, it does have two player split-
screen modes so you can play with a friend.

Options -

The opening screens are static rendered screens, but well done.
Club Drive offers 4 polygon worlds to play in; The Wild West, San
Francisco, Velocity Park and of course the Matchbox Car/House scene.
In each world you have both one and two player options, with
Powerball, Racing, and Tag modes available. In Powerball you have to
go around and find energy balls (the number is set by you) within a
time limit. The racing option is one or two player. The tag option is
two player only.
The frame rate seems to vary. The frame rate of the house scene is
very nice, while the frame rate of the other scenes looks about the
same as Cybermorph (without the bogging). When you crash the whole view
will bounce around fast and realistically, which I liked. There are
several external views, as well as the internal view, including
a "chase" camera that moves a'la Virtua Racing. Though more difficult
to maneuver with, I liked playing the game more with it's dynamic
view movement. You got to see the car in a bunch of different and
changing positions instead of the plain back-end "box" that you see
with the other angles. The top-view that is present in Checkered
Flag was missing in this game. Though it looked slower in the demo tape,
apparently they have fixed the split screen mode. I did not notice
any slowdown from full screen to split screen.
The majority of the game is in flat polygons, but the cars have
transparent polygons for windows and are light sourced in real time (only
really noticeable if you are bouncing around or crashing). There is some
texture mapping however; a few of them are even animated. The fireplaces
in the house are all done very nicely; The animation was cool, even better
than what I saw in Monster Manor's. In the house scene there is a pong
game going on the TV. In some modes this is replaced with an animated
picture of your car (which moves along with you. It looks pretty cool
actually). A blocky polygon cat and mouse also roam around the house
and get in your way occasionally. When you hit them you get a sampled
sound. You also get a sound sample of a "flush" when you run into the
toilet in the bathroom. =) The scaling in Chase mode is VERY fast and
silky smooth (at least in the house scene). When you warp to another area
it scales ALL the way there. You'd have to see it to understand what I
mean, but it looked good to me.
The polygon routines in this game have some disturbing flaws. In many
areas when you got too close to walls you saw "behind" the polygons
to the background pic. Cybermorph did this too in spots, but it was rare.
It seems far more chronic in this game. It didn't ruin the game for me,
but it was annoying.
The cars are nicely formed considering they are devoid of any
animation or texture mapping. The brake lights light up when you hit the
brakes, and the windows are transparent, giving the effect of tinted
glass, but thats about it. The camera angles in Chase mode make all the
difference; they are dynamic and fast, without the slightest hint of
bogging.

Gameplay -

Yes, I know what you're probably thinking - "Yawn..."; I thought
the same thing. But I have to be honest, I actually found myself enjoying
this game a bit. The worlds have nooks and crannies, and hidden areas
to explore. If polygon environments are your thing (they are certainly
mine...), you might actually find yourself enjoying this game too.
This game would seem to be aimed at the younger audience, but I
found the control to be rather difficult at first. For some reason
Cybermorph seemed much easier to control despite the fact that the
controls of the two games are virtually identical. Backing up takes
some getting used to; it controls like a "real" car in Reverse. Once you
get used to it, it's not too bad though. Fortunately like most Jaguar
games you can alter the button configuration any way you want, as well as
control the music and Sound/FX volume.
You have control over the background music as well, switching between
several "stations" like you would a radio. Though the frame rate
remains the same, you can switch the speed from slow to fast (Faster
is more difficult to control), and turn the engine noise on or off. There
are about 6 different cars to choose from, which all more or less look
the same with different colors (minor variations in each).
The worlds were detailed for the most part. The Wild West scene had
a bunch of back roads and tunnels to roam in, and the San Francisco scene
had a nice Virtual Cityscape/beach to drive around on with lots of
hills and buildings. The house is by far the most fun and original area
though. Playing two-player tag in there was really fun actually. Too bad
it's only split-screen; Comlynx would have been a big bonus for this
game. Chasing the cat/mouse around and finding all the hidden scenes
(for example driving into one of the fire places warps you to a castle
scene, and one of the tunnels in the Wild West warps you to the Atari
office building...) was actually more fun than you'd think.
A decent game overall, though serious action fans may find it a bit
dry; original if nothing else. - Jeff

Overall -

Graphics - 60% (Flat Polygon graphics with some scant texture
mapping, transparency, and light sourcing. The
scaling and frame rate are good.)
Sound - 70% (The music is decent with some variety and the
sound effects are done well for the most part)
Control - 75% (Takes some getting used to, but it works)
Playability - 60% (Assuming you have a friend, two player can be
quite entertaining. One player tends to get
old, fast...40% for One Player)
Replay Value - 65% (This cart is one giant re-play; there is no real
"game" in itself. This is a two-player cart more
or less. 20% for one player...)

---------------
Total - 66% or 53% if one player. An average game, but high marks
for originality. While it has it's flaws, there are
parts of it that are enjoyable, especially if you
like 3D environments. Unless you're into 3D (like me),
or unless you have kids, this is rental material only.

IX. Leading the Yehat Revolution.
During the end of the war, the Yehat Queen decided that the
Yehat should serve the Ur-Quan. The Yehat are divided into clans and
although some opposed the idea, they all eventually submitted to the
Queens wishes. The Yehat helped the Shofixti grow as a race and love
them. When the entire Shofixti race committed suicide(rather than join
the Ur-Quan) by destroying their own star(and destroying a great deal
of Ur-Quan ships), the Yehat thought of themselves as shameful cowards.
However, you can cause a revolution among the Yehat clans if you revive
the Shofixti, this will give you access to the Yehat ships(REALLY nice).

Once you have revived the Shofixti and the Earth space station
commander tells you that you can build their ships, just put one on your
ship and go visit the Yehats again.

X.The Melnorme.

A.New Technologies(AB=After buying). 150 Cr. each

1.Plans for building blaster weapons twice as powerful as your ion-bolt
guns.(AB)Please remember that these weapons consume energy from your
combat batteries faster than your familiar ion-bolt guns. You may
wish to compensate for this by building additional dynamo modules for
your flagship.
2.Specifications for constructing modifications to your planet landers
which will double their speed.(AB)Ah yes, speed..., an excellent
choice for the relentless hunter, and the craven coward as well.
These modifications are simple enough to be put into place immediately.
Your landers should be properly equipped in no time.
3.Details on how to add point-defense laser systems to your flagship.(AB)
These "little babies" are great for defense, but because of their limited
range they may not make a good offensive weapon, however the more you
build for your vessel, the more damage each laser strike will do.
4.Plans for building improvements to your planet landers which make them
resistant to hostile alien life-forms.(AB) Our reinforcement procedures
on your landers are complete, now provided your crew will stop putting
their hands out the windows, they will be much better protected against
hostile life-forms.
5.Blueprints which show how to increase your landers cargo space to double
its present volume.(AB)I hope this makes your resource gathering more
cost effective, Captain.
6.Blueprints which show how to add double capacity fuel tanks.(AB)We hope
that these improved tanks will make more module slots available on your
flagship which you can fill with other more useful equipment.
7.Plans for improving the rate of fire on your landers' stun-ray bolt-field
gun.(AB)After some wild game, hmm? well, the changes we made should
really make a difference unless of course that wiring went in backwards
in which case you won't be able to shoot at all, or take off for that
matter. Don't worry captain, we stand behind our work, if something goes
wrong, just bring it back to us and we'll fix it..pronto.
8.Details for building modifications to your planet landers which make them
resistant to earthquakes.(AB)With the addition of these safety-belts and
heavy-duty shock-absorbers, your lander occupants should be much safer
when an untimely earthquake strikes. The job is complete, your landers
are ready.
9.Plans for adding auto-tracking modules which improve the aim of ALL your
weapons.(AB)You are preparing for a mighty battle, EH? Well, let me give
you some advice. You should consider using multiple tracking modules
since this will greatly improve your aim. However, never add more than 3
to your ship, anymore would be useless.
10.Plans for adding improvements to your planet landers which make them
resistant to incoming planet weather.(AB)A little super-conductive
spraypaint and "presto". Your lander can sustain a direct hit by a
lightning bolt without risking the passengers inside...usually. Since
the job is so easy that a nymph could do it, I expect that all your
landers will be treated in less than an hour.
11.Everything you need to know to assemble modifications to your planet
landers which make them resistant to planetary hot-spots.(AB) With
these "new" additive-plasma heat shields, your crew will be
substantially safer on hot worlds. But, like all our lander
modifications, this protection is not perfect so remain cautious.
Since the changes to your landers are straightforward, your lander
should be fitted with a heat shield by the time you return to your
ship.
12.Plans for building "hell-bore" cannons. A weapon much more
destructive than a simple blaster.(AB)Captain, just a suggestion,
"hell-bore" cannons are energy culpers, so unless you want to have
a long delay between shots, I would suggest you add dynamos or
even Shiva Furnaces to your ship.
13.Details on how to develop Shiva Furnace modules which generate energy
for your combat batteries twice as fast as your standard dynamos.
(AB) I am certain you will appreciate this new module Captain, with
it, you should be able to destroy and devastate twice as fast as
before.
B.Information. 75 Cr. each.
1.Information about current events.
a.While you probably believe that the Shofixti are extinct, having
caused their sun to flare with a device identical to the Utwig's
superbomb, the truth is not so simple. There yet exists a chance
to resussitate this meta-marsupial species. Oh, it will not be easy.
The problem at hand seems simple, bring together two Shofixti of
different sexes and the carnal gymnastics proceed. Given the
short gestation and maturation time of the Shofixti, you will have
thousands of the creatures in 10 years and millions in 20. Finding
a male of the species is easier than fluff. Simply visit the
Shofixti's blasted star system at Delta Gorno. Captain Tanaka or
his sibling Kitana shall greet you on your arrival. A warning,
these warriors are old, and fly in barely functional ships. If,
they mistakenly identify you as the enemy, do NOT return fire.
Retreat, and try to talk with them on their own level. The females
of the species will be more difficult to obtain. The only supply
of such remaining in the galaxy is at Alpha Cerenkov 1. Included
as part of General Zex's bizarre and beloved menagerie. Fortunately
for you Captain, Zex is considered...well, perverse by his fellow
Vux. This is because Zex actually enjoys the presence of human
beings. To acquire the Shofixti females you will have to appease
Zex or...kill him.
b.The Ur-Quan are presently at war with a race called the Kohr-Ah.
They are fighting within a large spherical region of space, centered
around the Crateris star group. Although it is probably too early
to tell, it would appear that the Kohr-Ah are winning.
c.No doubt you are familiar with an alien race called the Umgah who
live in the Orionis constellation. While they are renowned for
their potent and often cruel sense of humor, they have outdone
themselves in recent years. Specifically, they have used an unusual
hyperwave caster to impersonate the Ilwrath gods Dogar and Kazon.
When the Ilwrath began tuning in to the voices of their gods on
their hyperwave receivers, their priest cast was understandably
skeptical and counseled their many followers to ignore the blasphemous
signals. However, in a surprise move, the majority of the Ilwrath
rose up and slaughtered the entire priest cast. Their reasons of
this ghastly move included: over-taxation, lack of quality death
in ceremony, and the general feeling that the priests had made
Dogar and Kazon's pronouncements overly complex.
d.As you know, there are weaknesses in the division between dimensions.
For example, your vessel uses such weaknesses to enter hyperspace,
however, there are other weak spots in the galaxy which lead to yet
different dimensions. On such portal exists nearby, between the
Chandrasekhar and Columbae constellations. The portal opens only
a short time each month, starting on the 17th. Since we have
never entered the portal, we can give no more information on this
subject.
e.As you are probably aware, Ur-Quan starships, you call them
dreadnoughts I believe, posess effective self-annihilation circuits
which prevent other races from reverse engineering Ur-Quan
technological secrets. However, we have become aware of a shipwrecked
dreadnought which has remained largely intact. You will find the
remains of this ship on the surface of a blue world orbiting
Alpha Pavonis. We suspect that you will find one item of interest
there, possibly two.
f.You may have noticed, the presence of an increasing large number of
red probe vessels which move with great speed and attack relentlessly.
We are sorry to say that this is our catalogue item 2418-B. Do not
blame us, we are not responsible for this violent folly, the product
is not being used in a correct manner. Should you wish to confront
the actual wrong-doers, we suggest you search the planets in Beta
Corvae for the probe's owners.
g.Not more than 50 years ago, the Druuge were informed by the now
extinct Burvixese race of a powerful alien nation called the Utwig.
The Utwig, the Burvixese explained, were pleasant, sophisticated
creatures but they were also terminally depressed and often spoke
about ending their lives by activating a super-weapon...some kind
of gigantic bomb which they had found on one of their worlds, Zeta
Hyades 6b I think it was. The Druuge recognized the description of
the bomb as a Precursor planateering tool, which indeed was an
explosive device of unrivaled power and they set out to make it
their own. Though the revolting, criminal, insidious Druuge rarely
leave their sphere of influence, it encompasses Algol, Almagest,
and the Persei stars, they made a special trip on this occasion to
the Aquarii constellation where they made contact with the Utwig.
There is a device commonly known as the Ultron. Is it now in YOUR
possession? Ah, I see. The Druuge sold this device to the Utwig
explaining that it was a Precursor personal magnifier, which would
enrich the lives of their entire culture in too many ways to describe
specifically. The Utwig, I'm sorry to say, fell for the Druuge's
foul ruse and snapped up the Ultron immediately. Fortunately for us
all, the Utwig did not pay the Druuge's requested price, the
super-bomb, and instead gave them a collection of historical objects
and genuine artifacts, which , to this day, the Druuge are trying
to unload on unwary buyers.
h.The Utwig, who live in the Aquarii constellation, have grown very
depressed of late, they accidentally broke the supposed Ultron sold to
them by the felonious Druuge. As a consequence, they are morose and
melancholic and will probably be unwilling to help you fight the
Ur-Quan. If you wish to gain them as allies, we recommend that you
acquire the broken Ultron, as if it ever worked, and find some
suitable replacement parts. Our information indicates that you can
find these items in 3 different places: a Rosy Sphere at the Druuge
tradeworld, an Aqua Helix somewhere in Thraddash space, and a Clear
Spindle which is currently in possession of the Pkunk. Captain,
that was the last Current Event that we have for sale.
2.Useful data on alien races.
a.The Zoq-Fot-Pik are a friendly co-op of 3 alien species all native
to the same world. They are presently suffering severe collateral
damage from the ritual combat between the Ur-Quan and the Kohr-Ah.
While this is unfortunate for the Zoq-Fot-Pik, they have been forced
to abandon many of their worlds. This close proximity to the
Inter-Ur-Quan war will give them insights into the conflict which will
be of great use to you. In addition, the Zoq-Fot-Pik met the Chenjesu
early on in the war and are eager to make allies who can protect them
from their enemies. In case you are interested, the Zoq-Fot-Pik
home world is at coordinates 400.0 x 543.7, planet 1.
b.The Ilwrath are presently attacking the Pkunk in the Lacaille and
Krueger constellations. These beings have slavish devotion to their
dark gods Dogar and Kazon which in the past few years have been used
against them by the Umgah. If you need to manipulate the Ilwrath, we
suggest you discover the Umgah's technique and duplicate it.
c.The Pkunk are a mystical offshoot of the Yehat species who left their
bird-brothers long ago to found a peaceful enclave in the Krueger and
Giclas stars. At the present time, the Pkunk are defending themselves
against the Ilwrath who have been commanded to attack the happy birds
by Dogar and Kazon. The Pkunk may be unwilling to make formal alliance
with you, but we have confidence that if you explain yourself honestly,
they will help your efforts against the Ur-Quan.
d.The creatures presently fighting the Ur-quan are called the Kohr-Ah.
They are an Ur-Quan subspecies who split off from the main species
many thousands of years ago. Their present fight is a ritual
reenacting of a major difference of opinion between two rival Ur-Quan
leaders, after the Ur-Quan overwhelmed their slave masters the Dnarri.
The Kohr-Ah are immune to reason having long ago lost the ability
their situation objectively. They live in a self-maintained paradox,
to ensure their safety and security, the Kohr-Ah fight an endless
battle against all other sentient species.
e.I must warn you about some very bad people. 'Is this worth so many
credits?', you ask yourself. I assure you, it is. the creatures are
called the Druuge and they are a callous, an evil race. They care for
nothing but profit and personal gain to unfair mercantile exchanges.
Why are you looking at me like that? Captain, it is not appropriate.
As I was saying, these wicked creatures will try to sell you commodities
at unreasonably low prices. Hoy, they almost give away fuel. Do not
fall for their tricks, there are hidden costs, secret tariffs. So,
that you may avoid them, I'll tell you that their main trade world is
Zeta Persei 1. Why are you smiling, Captain?
f.The Burvixese race evolved on the planet Arcturus 1. They lived there
in a relatively benevolent manner, until the Kohr-Ah came and
destroyed them in the course of 2 or 3 unfortunate days. The Druuge
were largely responsible for them finding the Burvixese. You see
the Burvixese were in long-distance, hyperwave contact with a race
known simply as the Geg. For decades, the Burvixese traded much
valuable information until the Geg came under attack by an invading
race you may know as the Kohr-Ah. The Geg warned the Burvixese that
the Kohr-Ah located races by their Hyperwave transmissions and that
they had already discovered the radiation from the Druuge. When the
Burvixese were kind enough to warn the Druuge that a hostile alien
race was homing in on their hyperwave radiation, the Druuge shut down
all their transmitters and erected a powerful hyperwave beacon on the
surface of the Burvixese moon. The Kohr-Ah changed course, attacked
the poor Burvixese and, sadly, destroyed them all.
g.The Thraddash are an arrogant, stubborn, and think-skinned species who
reside in the Draconis and Apodis star systems, they have little or no
respect for anything but force which they admire greatly. To make the
Thraddash your friends, you should consider killing most, but not all of
them. In addition, they guard some kind of sacred relic at the star
system Zeta Draconis. though we do not know the true nature of this
artifact, the Thraddash home world is at Delta Draconis.
h.After the war, the Chenjesu and the Mmrnmhrm chose to be slave
shielded on the Chenjesu's home world at Procyon. We suspect that
they are melding their two species to form some kind of new hybrid
race. A race which may well be powerful enough to destroy the
Ur-Quan single-handedly. However, by our calculations, this process
will take many decades if not centuries. Should you wish to talk
to them, we recommend you invest in a hyperwave broadcasting system
which is powerful enough to penetrate the shield around their world.
i.The Mycon are using this time while the Ur-Quan have their attention
elsewhere to expand their sphere of influence as fast as possible.
The Mycon colonize planets by launching deep spore-pods from orbit and
injecting them under the planet's surface. Months later, after
the spores have grown hundreds of thick fibrous tendrils under the
planet's crust, the tendrils suddenly thrust up out of the planet
and create huge calveras. Not incidentally, they fill the atmosphere
with the Mycon's preferred gases: clouds of super heated steam and
sulfuric acid.
j.Following the end of the war, the Androsynth began experimenting with
inter-dimensional-fatigue a process which is related to your faster
than light drive. But involves dimensions far more alien than
hyperspace. They had just made a major breakthrough when they were
suddenly wiped out by a race called the Orz. Who appeared seemingly
out of nowhere. Actually, we don't know what the Orz did to the
Androsynth, they're just all gone.
k.The Ariloulaleelay are a mysterious race of IDF beings. IDF meaning
Inter-dimensional-fatigue. They do not reside in this galaxy or,
in fact, anywhere in this universe. While it is true that the Arilou
are rarely seen far from the Columbae star group, they do make
regular secret visits to your world and have done so for centuries.
Ever since earth was slave shielded, they have focused their attention
on the humans aboard the starbase, many of whom are now members of
your crew. Though the Arioulaleelay always smile, and are never
overtly hostile, we believe that they have a secret agenda which
somehow involves your planet 'Earth'. These secret plans may or may
not cause grief and woe to your friends.
l.Just under 20 years ago, the brave and suicidal Shofixti annihilated
their species by exploding a Precursor device. Some kind of bomb in
the interior of their sun. The resulting storm of solar flares cooked
the life off the Shofixti home world and incinerated over 100 Ur-Quan
dreadnoughts which had just entered the system to conquer the Shofixti.
In actuality, there are at least a dozen Shofixti left alive in the
galaxy. 1 or 2 are at Delta Gorno, guarding the dead hulk of their
once beautiful world. Others can be found in Vux space.
m.The Slylandro are a mostly non-solid sentient race who live in
a gas giant at Beta Corvae. We recently sold them a self-replicating
exploration probe which has somehow turned hostile and attacks
everything it detects. If such encounters have angered you, Captain,
please do not address your concerns to us. We possess a formal
waiver of damages authorized by the Slylandro speaker and are in no
way responsible for the situation.
n.The cowardly Spathi live at the single planet orbiting Epsilon Gruis.
They do not actually live on their world, rather they reside on its
airless moon. The reason, a Xenomorphic species which craves the
sweet flavored flesh of the Spathi has been transported to the
surface of their planet and makes every attempt to devour the poor
Spathi. I'm certain that the Spathi would be forever in your debt
if you were to eliminate these creatures from their planet. What,
you fear the alien creatures will find you a treat also? Tih' our
data reveals the beasts are not interested in your species. Should
you wish to consult with the Spathi ruling counsel, you will need
to know the secret Spathi cipher, a password which
is:Haatti,Maatti,Daatti.
o.Like you earthlings, when the war with the Ur-Quan was lost, the
Syreen chose to be slave-shielded. There new world is at Betelgeuse.
The Syreen starbase is crewed by the starship commanders and crew
who were decommissioned at the end of the war. Though the Syreen
hate the Ur-Quan with a vengeance, they are unlikely to offer you
assistance unless you reveal to them the truth behind the tragedy
of their original home world Syra, by the birth of a Mycon
Deep-Child a century ago.
p.When the Ur-Quan entered Gamma Serpentis, the homestar of the Yehat,
their Queen made a sudden change of allegiance and allied with the
Ur-Quan hierarchy. They became Ur-Quan combat Thralls. This act
was viewed by most Yehats starship officers as ultimately
dishonorable. The desperate act of a corrupt regent to maintain
her throne. The Yehat shame was greatly magnified by the Shofixti's
show of courage when they destroyed their own star system to slow
down the Ur-Quan armada. Captain, you have heard all we have to
say about aliens indigenous to this region. Should we learn more
in the near future we shall be certain to sell it to you.
3.Historical information.
a.Almost 25,000 of your years ago, there existed, near this region
of space an association of star faring races called the Sentient
Nur-yu. This group formed over several thousand years to
mutually enrich their respective cultures. To provide a safe cresh
for emerging sentient species and to afford themselves a degree of
protection from external hostilities via military alliance. Of
the seven most active Nur-Yu members, the most famous race, indeed
you know them well Captain, were the Ur-Quan.
b.The Ur-Quan evolved on a harsh planet outside this region of space.
They were solitary predators like your preying mantis, Captain, or
polar bear, who had a very limited set of social behaviors most
of which dealt with sex. Since they had to compete for survival
against many physically superior species, the Ur-Quan evolved
intelligence and tool use, in much the same way as your own species.
The Ur-Quan also learned to master their fierce territoriality to
build a cooperative planetary culture. When the Ur-Quan were
discovered by the Taalo, they had just begun exploring their solar
system in crude atomic vehicles. Although, the Ur-Quan attacked what
they thought to be an invader, the Taalo were patient, they
explained the purpose of the Sentient Nur-Yu, and offered
the Ur-Quan membership. The Ur-QUan recognized the benefits of
such a system provided and once more conquered the hunting beast
within themselves to become cooperative productive members of the
Nur-Yu. This lasted several thousands of years.
c.Just over 20,000 years ago, when your ancestors were learning to
chart the course of the moon and stars on animal horns, the
sentient Nur-Yu spanned 500 light-years and included the membership
of a hundred worlds. Like all other star travelers, they had
discovered ruins and relics of a far more ancient culture which
your species calls the Precursors. Explorers from many species
spent their lives trying to piece together this ancient mystery.
But, of all races, the Ur-Quan were the most bold adventurers.
Their scouts flying single ships penetrated far into uncharted space
and landed on a million worlds. On one such mission a young Ur-Quan
made planetfall on a small, life-bearing, alien world to identify
some anomalous energy reading, occasionally a sign of Precursor
installations. Instead, the Ur-Quan found a small hideous creature, a
Dnarri, before the scout was able to defend himself, the Dnarri
creature took control of the Ur-Quan's mind and commanded the scout
to place the Dnarri aboard the scout's ship along with hundreds of
his evil brood. Then, the Ur-Quan returned to the heart of the
Nur-Yu, landing on its capital planet. Within hours, every resident
of the planet was a Dnarri slave. Within a month, the Dnarri
compelled starships, and spread the evil psychic creatures across
the entire Nur-Yu.
d.When the Dnarri took control of the Nur-Yu, one race fought back,
the Taalo. These slow quiet creatures were silicon-based life-forms
but bore little resemblance to the modern day Chenjesu. Taalo
were natural immune to the Dnarri psychic compulsions. They were
unaffected by the creatures powers and the Dnarri would not permit
anyone to exist outside their control. So, they ordered the
remaining races of the Nur-Yu to attack and destroy the Taalo home
planet. This planet was one of the few Nur-Yu worlds located in
this region of space. I believe you call their star Delta Vulpeculae.
Their home was a moon revolving above the second planet. I'm sad
to say the Taalo were indeed eliminated. However, at the time of
their devastation, they had completed a device which they thought
would give other races psychic immunity like their own. What
happened to this device, this "shield", its hard to say, maybe it
was destroyed in the attack on their home world, maybe not.
e.In the Dnarri's new empire, the Ur-Quan were the favored slaves.
This is probably because the Ur-Quan were the most psychically
sensitive, the most easily compelled. As the centuries of Dnarri
dominance passed, what was the Sentient Nur-Yu deteriorated and
degenerated into a great galactic gulag. Alien races which did
not serve with the efficiency and speed demanded by the Dnarri
were ruthlessly burned from the faces of their worlds. The agents
of this genocide were inevitable the Dnarri'd favored pet, the
Ur-Quan. After almost 2500 years of unrelenting Dnarri
control, there were only four living member races of the once great
Sentient Nur-Yu. By this point the Dnarri used genetic
manipulation to split the Ur-Quan into two subspecies. The green
Ur-Quan...scientists, technicians, and administrators who were
responsible for maintaining the infrastructure of the Dnarri
civilization and the black Ur-Quan...who filled the ranks of
basic laborer and combat soldier. Then, a chance discovery by
an Ur-Quan named Czertz-Ah led to the violent overthrow of
the Dnarri slave empire.
f.The Ur-Quan named Czertz-Ah was a green, a researcher specializing in
repairing the damage inflicted by long-term exposure to the Dnarri
psychic compulsion. By this point in history, the Dnarri had grown
lax in their dominance and on occasion accidentally permitted their
slaves moments of self-direction. Czertz-Ah was able to use those
few scattered minutes to compose a theory. From his observation,
Czertz-Ah realized that when a slave died, the Dnarri disconnected
it from the slaves' mind, lest it to be dragged down to death.
First the Ur-Quan scientist uncovered the fact that when a slave
underwent great pain, the Dnarri temporarily disconnected. But,
the degree of pain had to be extreme...nearly lethal. Czertz-Ah
chose its moment carefully. It waited until it was near an open
transmission unit. Then, in a short moment of mental freedom,
the Ur-Quan injected itself with a dose of acidic poison sending
incredible waves of pain through its long body. In the few moments
before its death, Czertz-Ah was able to wrest control of the
transmitter to send word of its discovery across the planet and
into space as well. Before, the Dnarri knew what was happening,
Ur-Quan everywhere were hacking at their own bodies with chunks of
glass. Burning themselves horribly, doing anything that would give
them the few seconds of freedom necessary to find the nearest
Dnarri and crush the bleating creatures. As they gained longer
and longer periods of control, the Ur-Quan built new tools and
weapons to destroy their evil masters. The most gruesome of these
devices was the excruciator, a mechanism which was inserted directly
into the brain and generated a constant stream of agony. The Dnarri
could not bring themselves to make the necessary mental connections
with these tortured Ur-Quan. They were slaughtered by the
thousands. The Ur-Quan slave revolt was won.
g.When the last Ur-Quan was free of psychic compulsion, when the last
free Dnarri was dead, the combined might of the Ur-Quan starfleets
met in orbit above the Dnarri home world. They had come together
to make two important decisions. First, how to punish the few
frightened Dnarri left below on the planet's surface. Second, how
to make ensure that, never again, will the Ur-Quan be made slaves.
The first decision was made swiftly. The Dnarri would not be
allowed to die..ahh, that was to kind a fate. Instead, the
creatures would be genetically modified to sub-sentience, they
will become dumb animals. These low creatures would be further
defaced by serving the Ur-Quan for all eternity in the most
demeaning way the Ur-Quan could imagine. Acting as translators,
making physical contact with other species. Whom the Ur-Quan
considered grossly inferior to themselves and revolting. The
second decision, how to ensure their freedom permanently caused
great turmoil.
h.Following the successful Ur-Quan slave revolt, the Ur-Quan met to
decide how to ensure their freedom. The green Ur-Quan who called
themselves the Czertz-Ah, in honor of the Ur-Quan who triggered
the revolt wished to establish the Path of Now and Forever, which
required that all other sentient species must become slaves of
the Ur-Quan or be forever imprisoned beneath an impenetrable force
shield. Leading the opposition to this plan was Kohr-Ah, a
charismatic fleet officer. Kohr-Ah proposed a simpler alternative.
Simply put, this scheme called for the systematic eradication of
all sentient life in the universe, aside from the Ur-Quan. Captain,
if these positions seem to you extreme, or unwarranted you must
remember that the Ur-Quan had been unwilling slaves for millennia and
that each of them had to remain in agony for years in order to defeat
the Dnarri. The followers of Czertz-Ah and Kohr-Ah were all on the
brink of madness, but neither side would submit and so they fought
a bloody civil war.
i.This is the last historical item we have for sale. The civil war
between the green Ur-Quan, the followers of Czertz-Ah, and their
opponents, the death dealing Kohr-Ah lasted for decades. It is
likely that they would have annihilated each other were it not
for a chance discovery by Czertz-Ah, a Precursor battleship. The
vessel was huge, many times the size of the Ur-Quan's vessels.
The Precursor ship sliced through the Kohr-Ah forces in days. The
Kohr-Ah were defeated. However, in their victory, the Czertz-Ah
were humble, they realized that there was a chance that they were
wrong and the Kohr-Ah were right. Instead of destroying the
Kohr-Ah, the Czertz-Ah let them go, directing them to make their way
through the stars, traveling against the spin of the galaxy.
The Czertz-Ah would travel in the opposite direction and when the
two Ur-Quan forces met they would fight again in ritual combat with
a Precursor ship given to the winner. Captain, this is happening
here and now. The Czertz-Ah the Ur-Quan who enslaved earth are
fighting their ritual battle against the Kohr-Ah in a large area
centered near the Crateris constellation. If the Kohr-Ah win
this battle, Captain, the Czertz-Ah will stand aside and let
them kill us all. We believe it is your destiny to prevent this
from happening. - Steve

--- --- -----------------

The Industry -

Finally, we have entered the last month of 1994. With Christmas, we can
see a lot of things change depending on how well these companies do with
their marketing campaigns. Lets start with the newest 32-bit machine,
Sega's 32X.

I first started seeing the 32X in retail stores around the last part of
November. By now, there are 3 games for it: Star Wars, Virtua Racing
Deluxe, and Doom. From what I've seen of both the Jaguar and the 3DO,
when it comes to the ability of the systems, I'd say that neither of
these two machines has a whole lot to worry about. None of the current
32X games knock your socks off. You have Star Wars, a polygon based
first person shooter with few texture mapped polygons. From what I
played of it, I found the slow turning X-Wing that you control to be
rather annoying. You also have the option to play in two player mode
using a Y-Wing, but there's not much difference other than that one person
controls the ship while the other does the shooting. Virtua Racing Deluxe
is a lot more playable. There's 10 tracks as opposed to the arcade's 5
and it looks pretty smooth, however it doesn't have all the extra scenery
graphics of the arcade nor the graphics in general of the arcade. Doom
looks pretty nice. It has the graphics of the PC version and it is fast.
However, there's no rear or side views of your enemies and there's no
2-player mode of any kind which really does shoot this game in the foot, as
thats what made it so playable on the PC.

Overall, with 3 games out(potentially 5 by Christmas) and being under powered
compared to the others I'm not going to be purchasing one. If you do have a
Genesis already, it may not be so bad, but personally, I'd just keep saving
my money.

The Atari Jaguar. Well, the games are actually beginning to arrive(WOW!)!
This should make the sales rise for the holiday season. Doom looks good
with 16-bit color and networking. But, Iron Soldier looks fantastic, this
title will sell systems if promoted properly. The whole Battletech/huge
robot games has not been explored in great deal on most systems and with
the Jaguar's number crunching ability, this 1st person polygon based game
looks like a winner. Rayman's graphics are stunning. However, with 16-bit
graphics this will do a number on a cartridge. Impairing the game to only 5
levels that are 2 screens tall by 40 screens wide. This is a problem that
will hinder any cart based system using intense graphics and sound. Carts
are CAPABLE of this, but the price would most likely be greater than that
of the system itself. The Jaguar could do well this Christmas if these
titles, as well as, a few other quality titles come out.

3DO -

Bad, bad, bad. Super Street Fighter ][ Turbo(SSFT2)and Samurai Shodown(SS)
are getting thrashings on all the nets. SSFT2: some people complain of
sound(mainly the music) not working properly on some 3DO machines and the
lack of the parallax scrolling backgrounds being absent from the arcade.
I have recently played the game myself, and find it identical in play. The
sprites animate smoothly and there is no slowdown, all the moves are here
as well as the 'Turbo' additions, you can even play as Akuma(Yeah!).
Samurai Shodown: I played this title and I thought that it bites. The
zooming was horrible, the sprites were jerky and slow, and the sound
quality was horrible. But, there is speculation that some 3dos choke on
this game while others claim that what I said above is non-existent on
their machines, excluding the sound. Whatever the case, you people need
to call Crystal Dynamics, because this machine is 10 times more powerful
than the Neo Geo and there is no excuse for this kind of a port. Way of
the Warrior has proven that this system can have fighters with
awesome high resolution/color graphics and animate them very fast, even
with a killer soundtrack during the fights(maybe Naughty Dog should've
done the conversion in the first place!). Also, We received mail on the
internet from a 3do employee, he stated that the $250 price of the
fliptop 3do is a rumor, and that the cost reduction was for the
manufacturer not the consumer he continued to say that rumors like this
will hurt sales for current 3DO products..

Good, good, good. Gex! What more should I say, this platformer looks
hilarious with funny characters and a professional comedian doing the
character's sound. The animation looks very impressive and very colorful.
This platformer has a brand new concept, heheh, sticking on the walls behind
him. Need For Speed looks breathtaking. I was pleased to hear that the
coders are the original coders of Test Drive back on the 16-bit computers,
and I used to love that game. From descriptions given by those who've
played it, there's lots of options like an instant replay mode, multiple
camera angles and loads of texture mapped landscapes and cars to interact
with. Time2Die(working title)- will supposedly arrive in next February.
This game is from Leo Shwab's team who brought us Escape From Monster
Manor(EFMM) in only 6 months. This game will feature texture mapped
floors and roofs unlike EFMM. The graphics look great and if the music
and play is as good as that from EFMM, this one will be killer.
The price of 3DO is dropping for Christmas and with titles like SSFT2 and
Need For Speed, FIFA Soccer, Wing Commander ]I[, Demolition Man, Way of the
Warrior, Rebel Assault, World Cup Golf, Off-World Interceptor, Star
Control ][, Guardian War, Slayer, and possibly 20 more before Christmas,
this machine will fly off the shelves. Folx, I recommend you buy the
3DO now, it is the best unit on the market, and the most powerful also!
You get 2 games with it and a big software library that keeps on growing.
We need you 3do supporters to get out there and help sell the product,
3DO offers the most unique experience of video gaming known at this time,
the games are in depth, and fun. This system has the best graphics and sounds
you can get on a home machine... If you are a hard core gammer, and love
original games with new concepts and brilliant graphics and sound BUY
THIS SYSTEM NOW!-Steve -Bryan

Sega Saturn -

The demo units have begun to arrive. The Saturn will not "officially" be here
until late next year, but it is officially in Japan now, and for a fat fee,
certain gaming stores can import one for you.

They had a demo unit already there and I got to play Virtua Fighters. I was
less than amazed considering the hype. Oh, it's an *ok* translation in
comparison to the awesome arcade game. Less polygons (the hands were balled
into "clubs" of about 8 polygons each. No joke...and this is the SATURN we're
talking about...), the resolution looked less than the arcade, the colors
looked faded (could have been the TV, but the light souring was flakier than
the arcade, and the floor map did not have as much detail). about the only
thing that was arcade exact was the backgrounds; they look great.

It moves faster than the arcade but the frame rate is not as high, which makes
it look a tad jerkier, and pretty cheap in comparison to the real thing. I'm
sure it's better than what FFYL will look like on the Jag, but after all the
hype I expected it to at least MOVE like the real thing, even if it didn't
look at good. I didn't see the silky-smooth fluid feel I like so much in the
arcade version. $500+? I'll pass thanks...
