Congratulations to Digital Pictures (is this a new company?) for having the
courage to make a truly creative computer game. This is like no other sports
game you've played. It's kind of like an RPG meets sports simulation. You are
the quarterback and only the quarterback - you don't control other runners,
receivers, or defense. This feels kind of limiting, but is also works,
because that's real football; you really feel like you are the quarterback,
not the whole team.

The graphics are all FMV, but this works very well. The passing is
surprisingly effective - you can look upfield at any receiver, and it's not
hard to tell when they're open. You also get a good head-up look at the
defensive allignment before the snap, and you can really improve you're game
by selecting an appropriate audible based on the defensive coverage. You can
customize the audibles, and there's quite a few running and passing plays to
choose from. (You need to use running plays sometimes, but the game is more
in the passing, which takes more skill because you have to time it right.)

The sound and graphics are intense, you can really feel the hits when you get
sacked. The pre and post game videos are also nicely donw, with your players
and Mike Ditka cheering you on (or not, depending on how you do). At
half-time Ditka goes over your stats in the dressing room, a nice touch that
adds to the realism. The game has six skill levels (I lost my first game then
one the next on the rookie level), and the defenses are supposed to get a lot
better on higher levels (blitzes, and it learns more from your play calling).

All in all, a very impressive effort. My grades:

Graphics/Sound: A
Originality: A+
Gameplay: A
Realism: B+ (very real, but lacks stats/real NFL teams of other football
games)
Overall: A-

Night Trap
Sewer Shark
Double Switch
Prize Fighter
Ground Zero Texas
Corpse Killer
Supreme Warrior
Slam City
plus a few that I can't think of at the moment.
Comming Soon: Maximum Surge

They started out for the Sega CD, then went to 3DO, then 32X (blah)
and now MAC and PC.

Check out their web page at: http://www.digipix.com and maybe you'll
get a cool free demo cd (for your PC) of upcomming titles.
I got a pretty cool "making of" video for Corpse Killer, Supreme
Warrior and Slam City for free a while back.

Of course, I only buy the games for the cool free tattoos inside.
