I understand that, once Milton Bradley, who took over GCE and who was
in turn taken over by Hasbro, Vectrex and all its games reverted to
Smith Engineering, where they faded out of sight until Smith
Engineering released it all to the public domain. So, since Pitcher's
Duel was originally a GCE game, shouldn't it come out for public
domain download soon?

Brandon,
you can already download it from Jeroen's website :- http://www.vectrex.nl/
- look under Games [unreleased and prototypes], and also from Martijns

Ok, went to get PD, and couldn't help but notice Mail Plane there as
well. File is 8K (seems ok), download, put on Vecflash, get startup
and selection screens, then...nothing. Pen was hooked up to port 2,
so am I missing something?

Ok, I don't know if this is the reason because I don't have a light
pen and so can't test it, but it could be because the game binary
conflicts with the Vec menu on the VecFlash cartridge.
The quickest way to find out and perhaps solve the problem, is to
load the binary through the patcher program and then save it onto the
VecFlash. The patcher program comes in the zip file containing the
vecflash.exe program and "fixes" rom images which crash when run from
the VecFlash menu. Let us know if it works, then we can add it to the
small list of programs that are known to conflict with the Vec menu
program.

Ah, forgot about the patcher! Thanks, I'll check it out tonight and
report back.

Hi,

I've just disassembled the MailPlane ROM, and it seems like it's an
invalid image : the 256 first bytes are repeated twice in the binary,
and the program seems to do really weird things, like calling
"Move_to_d" (at $F312) with the DP register set to $C8 instead of $D0
(this is what causes the infinite loop at $F33D, by the way).

So my best guess would be that it's a corrupted image, don't bother
trying it! :)

Regards,
Franck.

Ahh Frank, you're still there in the land of Vectrex. When's the next
version of your excellent ParaJVE coming out please?

Still there, lurking around! :-)

There's not really any date planned yet, since I can't work on it on a
regular basis ; but don't worry there should be another release
eventually!
Anyway, I've updated the blog today if you seek fresh information :

OK, now that I got the image, I'm a bit stumped...

Is there any way to control the throwing of the ball in the game, or
is all of that automatically handled by the Vectrex?

I don't have my manual with me at the moment to reference, but as I
remember it, in innings where you pitch, each button is a different
type of pitch and you aim with the control stick. This is a fast
paced game, there is no control over fielding or running the bases,
only hitting and pitching.

Pitchers Duel

At the start of the game, use button 1 to select the number of players
and button 2 selects how many innings you want to play.
Button 4 starts the game.

In eiether the one-player or the two-player game, player 1 will begin on
defense. The batter will be introduced showing his portrait and
statistics. Press a button to indicate that you are ready and the bat
will commence. Select your pitch by pressing one of the four buttons as
indicated in the control diagram. Change the location of the pitch by
using the joystick.

The batter is able to choose between normal and a power swing by
pressing the appropiate button. Move closer to or away from the plate
with the joystick.

Controls (offense)
1 - brings up the current scorecard
2 - not used
3 - power swing
4 - normal swing

The joystick controls the batter position in relation to the home plate.
Step back to take that inside pitch down the line or lean into one
that's low and away.

Controls (defense)
1 - brings up the current scorecard
2 - knuckleball
3 - changeup
4 - fastball

You can change the location of the pitch with the joystick. The cursor
on-screen will not move, but the position of the ball will. The ball can
be controlled throughout it's entire flight.
