Here is the next in the Rotating Quiz series. Post your answers to the
group, based on your own knowledge (ie. no looking things up). The answers
and winner will be revealed in about 5 days from now. This time, there's no
theme - but there is a slight Australian bias ;-)

1. Which 'Big ... ' tourist icon is located just north of Coff's Harbour?
2. Who writes the Discworld novels?
3. What place holds the record for the highest recorded temperature in
Australia?
4. Who was the Australian Nobel laureate whose award related to the
development of penicillin?
5. In the IT world, what does the acronym WAIS stand for?
6. Which is the least successful Australian Football League team?
7. What was the (unofficial) theme song of the 1983 Australia II America's
Cup team?
8. Who announced his retirement from cricket commentary in February 2009?
9. Where is the lowest point in Australia?
10. Who was/is the shortest serving Australian Prime Minister?

Enjoy,

Rob

nothing can possible go wrong and every avenue has been covered, then
is the time to buy a house on the next continent.

... Banana
No points for (sort of) knowing that Coff's Harbour is on the north coast of New South Wales.

> 2. Who writes the Discworld novels?
Sir Terry Pratchett

> 3. What place holds the record for the highest recorded temperature in
> Australia?
Oodnadatta
On 2 Jan 1960 a temperature of 50.7 C (123 F) was recorded.
"Some hellhole in the outback", although correct, is not specific enough ;-)

> 4. Who was the Australian Nobel laureate whose award related to the
> development of penicillin?

Howard Florey
He shared the prize with (Scot) Alexander Fleming and (German-born Brit) Ernst Chain.

> 5. In the IT world, what does the acronym WAIS stand for?

Wide Area Information Server/Service
Western Australian Institute of Sport does fit the them, but not the criteria in the question.  System is close enough by me.

> 6. Which is the least successful Australian Football League team?

Gold Coast Suns
The new team on the block this year, with a spectacularly bad season thus far.

> 7. What was the (unofficial) theme song of the 1983 Australia II America's
> Cup team?

Down Under, by Men At Work.
In 2010, the Federal Court ruled that the flute riff had been pinched from a 1935 song "Kookaburra Sits In The Old Gum Tree".

> 8. Who announced his retirement from cricket commentary in February 2009?

Richie Benaud.
Despite the announcement, Benaud is still very much involved in Channel Nine's cricket broadcasts, albeit less as an actual commentator these days.

> 9. Where is the lowest point in Australia?

Lake Eyre.
Not accepting GBR - to do so would mean that many of the world's countries (all those on a coast) have land below sea level, which is not widely accepted.  0.5 for Stephen, who wanted a bit both ways.

> 10. Who was/is the shortest serving Australian Prime Minister?

Frank Forde.
His term of 8 days, following the death of John Curtin in 1945, was shorter than the 3 weeks of John ("Black Jack") McEwen following the disappearance of Harold Holt while swimming at Portsea in 1967.

And the winner is ... Peter Smyth, who was betting on Calvin to win ... which he did, narrowly, from Stephen.

So now it's over to Calvin for the next in this series.

Thanks all for participating,

Rob
