RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #353 (GOLQ353)

Congratulations to DEC & Friends, Delphi Trivia Club, and Village Idiots, who
tied for first with nearly-perfect scores. They only missed #T2, which was a
complete stumper for all entrants.

Just behind were Really Rockin' In Boston (off the pace by a tiebreaker),
followed by The EJs (missing just one regular song).

As a few entrants noted, even my quizzes that have "no particular themes" have
an implied theme of "homage to the recently departed." In this case, that
included songs #01, 02, 08, 12, and 14. Song #20 became part of this group
during the running of the quiz.

Each song has one or more audio links (quality and permanence not guaranteed).

As always, thanks to everyone who entered! The July 2016 quiz (GOLQ #354)
will be posted soon.

Lee Andrews (Arthur Lee Andrew Thompson) died 3/16/16 at 79. His son Ahmir
Thompson, known as Questlove, is a prominent musician and producer.

Carlo Mastrangelo, the group's baritone (and lead singer on this recording),
died 4/4/16 at 78. The song was originally recorded by Norman Fox and The
Rob-Roys in 1957, and was written by Buzzy Helfand, the Rob-Roys' bass.
Both groups hailed from the Bronx.

Songwriting is credited to Brown and then-girlfriend, Betty Jean Newsome.
They offered conflicting accounts of how much each contributed to it.

In 1963, Tammy Montgomery (before adopting her stage name of Tammi Terrell)
recorded "I Cried" for JB's "Try Me" label; this has the same chord
progression, so is arguably a precursor to IAMMMW.

Brown recorded an early version (as "It's a Man's World") in 1964.
This version remained unreleased until the CD era.

Last link is a live version performed in 2002 by JB with Luciano Pavarotti.

Written by group member Donald Storball. The Detroit variation of the jerk
that Storball was writing about was evidently dubbed the "pimp jerk." Not
surprisingly, he decided to alter the title/lyrics to make the song more
radio-friendly. Backing musicians were moonlighting members of Motown's
legendary "Funk Brothers."

at #103. The protagonist's name "Bill" was apropos to the 5th Dimension,
as lead singer Marilyn McCoo was then engaged to bandmate Billy Davis Jr.

Gogi died on 3/10/16 at 91. After recording "Who Are We", in November 1955,
there was some spare time left in the session. Label owner Herb Newman
suggested a song he'd co-written; thus was born her subsequent release,
"The Wayward Wind," which was her biggest hit. The EJs noted that the label
also credits Buddy Bregman's Orchestra and Chorus.

On 1/28/16, two of the original members of Jefferson Airplane passed away,
both at age 74. The better-known was Paul Kantner, who led the group
through most of its Airplane/Starship incarnations. The other was vocalist
Signe Toly Anderson, who left after "Jefferson Airplane Takes Off" (their
first album). Signe's replacement was the lead singer of The Great Society,
Grace Slick. Grace wrote & sang lead on this song.

Song was first recorded by Brian Hyland in 1966, as the B-side to
"The Joker Went Wild." It also appeared as a B-side by Checkmates, Ltd.
in '66. Any of these artists would have received full credit.

The group's relative lack of pop-chart success belies their reputation among
collectors. "Reparata" was the confirmation name of lead singer Mary Aiese
(pictured at right in the link above). This was their final single for RCA;
although it didn't chart nationally, it was a regional hit in the NYC area,
peaking at #37 on WMCA's weekly survey.

WMCA (whose DJs were collectively "The Good Guys") was a Top-40 mainstay
on the NYC AM dial until converting to a talk station in 1970.
"Dandy" Dan Daniel, one of the WMCA Good Guys, died on 6/21/16 at 81.
