this is rotating quiz #252. today is april 15th, 2017. at least for a few more minutes...

the winner will be the first choice to set rq 253, in a manner of their choosing.

please answer based only on your own knowledge; put all of your answers in a single posting, quoting the question before each one.

answer slates must be posted before 9pm edt (philadelphia/toronto time) on saturday, 2017-04-22, which gives a lot of time from the time of this posting.

in case of a tie, the first tiebreaker will be who scored on the hardest questions; and the second tiebreaker will be who posted first.

No, not if it was on April 8... but actually both incidents were on
April 9. I haven't found any reports giving the time of day, so I don't
know which one was first.

Wait a minute... if the scorpion bite was on April 9, this means
that I accidentally gave a correct and complete answer on this one!
I'll declare myself ineligible to be the next moderator for scoring
that way, but I want a full point for this! (I think it's reasonable
to assume without proof that there was at least one Canadian man on
that flight on April 8.)

I did not do any deep research of the name, but from what I could see on
Wikipedia there is nothing that indicates that "luxem" would have an origin
from some word meaning "little". And even less means "little" today, which
actually was the question.

On the other hand, I can only blame myself for not nailing this one. Because
while the meaning of "luxem" is unclair, the meaning of "bourg" is not, and
it is the only country name in Europe which includes a component that means
"fortress". Somehow I managed to look over this obvious answer.

On the other hand, Wiktionary and etymonline.com do give that origin.
The English-language Wikipedia at "County of Luxemburg" gives that one
and another.

Again "means".

No, I don't know the etymology of all country names in Europe. Then agin,
very many names take their name from the people living there. Or some
people who used to live there. (One example of the latter is Belgium
which I believe takes its name from a Celtic people.)
