Barring mutations, a man's Y chromosome is passed on identically to
his sons. But Richard III's Y chromosome doesn't match those of a
number of men descended through the male line from the 5th Duke of
Beaufort (1744-1803), although the duke was supposed to have been
a male-line descendant of Richard's. There is no data available
to say which generation the infidelity occurred in, but if it was
early enough, several past monarchs may not have been the legitimate
descendants of previous monarchs that they were supposed to be.
