These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2018-05-28,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of What She Said and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see
my 2018-07-16 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 2, Round 4 - Literature - Women who Write Women

Female mystery/thriller series authors are some of the
most successful in the genre and they tend to create
strong female protagonists. Each of these characters is
featured in a series of at least 10 titles. We'll name
the character and the city with which she's associated;
you name the author.

1. V.I. Warshawski, Chicago.
2. Stephanie Plum, Newark, NJ.
3. Kathy Mallory, New York.
4. Tess Monaghan, Baltimore.
5. Carol Jordan, various places in England.
6. Eve Dallas, New York.
7. Mary Russell, England (principally London).
8. Kay Scarpetta, Richmond VA, Hollywood FL, and Charleston SC.
9. Temperance Brennan, Montreal and Charlotte NC.
10. Kinsey Millhone, Santa Theresa, CA.

* Game 2, Round 5 - Audio - Canadian Hip-Hop

Yes, once again you're getting an audio round without the audio --
there are going to be several of these this season. To compensate
this time, I'll include the title of each clip that was played.

Hip-hop has been an essential part of the Canadian music scene
for more than 30 years, and Canadian artists -- although sometimes
unfairly ignored in their home country -- have become increasingly
important in the international hip-hop scene. In each case,
name the artist or group as applicable.

1. He was the first Canadian artist to enter both the Canadian
and US top-40 charts, doing so in 1989. [Clip: "Let Your
Backbone Slide".]

2. This group are considered one of the most important artists of
the jazz-rap movement of the early 1990s, but might be more
famous for sampling the theme song from the classic Canadian game
show "Definition". ["My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style".]

3. This group was the first Francophone band to top Quebec's
music charts and are considered the forefathers of
French-Canadian hip-hop. ["Soul Pleureur".]

4. This Ottawa-based group are remembered primarily for being
the first stage in the entertainment career of TV star Tom Green.
["Check The O.R."]

5. This band refused to accept the Juno they won in 1998 for their
album "Cash Crop," which featured this single, when they
discovered that the award was not going to be televised as part
of the show, as they believed the Canadian music community was
intentionally marginalizing hip-hop. ["Northern Touch".]

6. This artist's "Joyful Rebellion" album earned him three Junos
in 2005; it was recognized by Rolling Stone magazine as one of
the ten best albums of the year. ["Crabbuckit".]

7. Widely considered to be one of the country's best hip-hop
producers, this artist in 2004 had the highest American chart
success of any Canadian up to that time when this single made
top 5 on Billboard's Hot 100. ["Dangerous".]

8. One of this artist's songs was selected as Coca-Cola's theme
song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. ["In the Beginning".]

9. This artist is the first Canadian hip-hop artist to peak at #1
on the US "Billboard" Hot 100. ["One Dance".]

10. This protege of Drake is the first artist in history to hold
the top three slots on the Billboard Hot R&B chart
simultaneously. ["Starboy".]

* Game 2, Round 6 - Science - Parrots

There are over 400 species of parrots, and they all want a cracker.
We'll tell you the parrot, and you tell us which one it is on
the handout:

http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/2-6/parro.pdf

(Note that each number is *below* its image.)

1. Hyacinth macaw.
2. Golden parakeet.
3. Blue-and-yellow macaw.
4. African grey parrot.
5. Great-billed parrot.
6. Umbrella cockatoo.
7. Budgerigar.
8. Cockatiel.
9. Kaka.
10. Sunset lorikeet.

And if you'd like to identify the 8 decoys, for fun but for no
points, then decode the rot13 and proceed:

11. Tbyvngu pbpxngbb be cnyz pbpxngbb.
12. Erq-naq-terra znpnj.
13. Oyhr-naq-terl ybevxrrg.
14. Ryrtnag cneebg.
15. Svfpure'f ybiroveq.
16. Ehccryy'f cneebg.
17. Oyhr ybevxrrg.
18. Lryybj-ovoorq ybel.

I didn't enter because I didn't know a single answer. I suspect I'm not
alone in that.

Almost the same here. There was a single one where I said to myself "I
should spot that one", and I even had a witty line to go with it. I was
feeling stupid, because I was not entirely sure. But I see know that
the number I would have answered was correct.

And here goes the witty line:

> There are over 400 species of parrots, and they all want a cracker.

Nah, #11 seems to be content with a piece of cucumber. The kaka on the
other hand wants a lot more. I put my plate the table outside, but went
back in to pick up utensils that I had forgotten. When I came out, one
of my pies was already on the ground, and the kaka was messing with
the other.

Ah, but obviously that's only because no crackers were available!

You have a New Zealand parrot? (I thought it sounded like Maori, but
I had to look it up.)

If Jason Kreitzer had posted his answers on time, he would have scored
0 points on Round 4, 0 on Round 5, and 4 on Round 6.
