These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2020-01-13,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of MI5 and are used here by
permission, but have been reformatted and may have been retyped
and/or edited by me. For further information see my 2019-10-16
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition
(QFTCI*)".

* Game 1, Round 7 - Sports - AP NFL MVP Award-Winners

The AP has presented an award recognizing the NFL's top player
since 1957. The award is voted on by a panel of 50 sportswriters
at the end of the aegular season, and the results are announced
to the public on the day before the Super Bowl. Here's a round
on past winners.

For each one, we will name *one* year that they won the award, their
position and team at that time, and -- for those of you who don't
follow football -- a bit of non-football info about the player.
And you just have to name them.

1. 1977, Chicago Bears running back. In 1987, he accidentally
shot the manager of a nightclub he owned with a French-made
9 mm Maurhin Pistolet he'd bought for his collection. He had
not realized the pistol was loaded.

2. 1986, New York Giants linebacker. He voiced the steroid-riddled,
possibly insane former football player B.J. Smith in the video
game "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City". The character poked fun
at his fearsome, drug-fueled public image.

3. 1965, Cleveland Browns running back. His acting debut was as a
"buffalo soldier" in the 1964 movie "Rio Conchos", also starring
Richard Boone and Stuart Whitman.

4. 1973, Buffalo Bills running back. His Fall 1975 advertising
campaign for Hertz Rent-a-Car showed him decked out in a tan
three-piece suit high-stepping his way across the terminal of
Newark International Airport.

5. 2015, Carolina Panthers quarterback. This handsome Christian
with his own clothing line has a degree in sociology from Auburn
and was a self-proclaimed pescatarian who has now become a vegan.

6. 2003, Tennessee Titans quarterback (joint winner with Peyton
Manning). In 2009, he was found dead from multiple gunshot
wounds in a Nashville condominium. He had been murdered by
his 20-year-old girlfriend, who was in financial trouble and
suspected him of having an affair. After shooting him, she
committed suicide.

7. 2018, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback. His first endorsement
deal came from Hunt's after he revealed his love of ketchup.

8. 2011, Green Bay Packers quarterback. He was in a romantic
relationship with actress Olivia Munn from 2014 until 2017 and
is now dating former race-car driver Danica Patrick. In 2015,
he won $50,000 for charity on "Celebrity Jeopardy!", defeating
astronaut Mark Kelly and "Shark Tank" star Kevin O'Leary.

9. 1999, St. Louis Rams quarterback. In retirement, he has devoted
time and money to his First Things First Foundation, which
derives its name from his 1999 post-Super-Bowl interview when
he said, "Well, first things first, I've got to thank my Lord
and Savior up above -- thank you, Jesus."

10. 1975, Minnesota Vikings quarterback. During the 2016 Republican
National Convention, he gave a speech endorsing Donald Trump.

* Game 1, Round 8 - Miscellaneous - Traditional Italian Pasta Sauces

We give you the main ingredients; you tell us the Italian name of
the sauce.

1. Butter, cream, and freshly grated cheese.

2. Olive oil, grated parmesan cheese, pine nuts, basil, and garlic.

3. Fresh tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, and basil.

4. Rich meat sauce flavored with wine, tomatoes, other vegetables,
and nutmeg.

5. Meat, olives, and vegetable sauce. Hint: This one means "hunter"
in Italian.

6. Shrimps, scallops, mussels, garlic, olive oil, tomatoes,
and basil.

7. Fresh tomatoes, chopped bacon, onion, and garlic, with grated
pecorino romano cheese.

8. Clam sauce with onions, tomatoes, olive oil, and garlic.

9. Tomato, anchovies, olives, and capers.

10. Olive oil, pancetta, and pecorino romano cheese.

Hey, Stephen finally missed one! Bucatini is a type of pasta,
not a sauce.

Is there a, um, source for this? Carbonara always includes eggs AFAIK.

I have no idea.

After some web searching it looks as though you're right. But the
score stands. Erland gets the points for giving the expected answer,
Stephen did not name a pasta sauce at all, and nobody else tried
this one. As we say in the league, "you can't protest the question".

I thought so too, but I found unlikely that they would have a quiz
like this without having carbonara, so I threw it in.

It could be that since the egg is not in the sauce itself, they did not
include it. Typically, you get the egg yolk in a shell.

I could have scored more points if I had had the guts. Amatriacana is
another one I would have expected, but I have no recollection of
bacon in it, but on the other hand I was under the impression that
there is chili in it.
