These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2015-01-12,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of MI5, and are used here by
permission, but have been reformatted and may have been retyped
and/or edited by me. For further information see my 2015-02-23
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition

* Game 1, Round 9 - Sports - Premier League Nicknames

The Premier League of English soccer currently includes the following
20 teams:

Arsenal | Leicester | Stoke
Aston Villa | Liverpool | Sunderland
Burnley | Manchester City | Swansea
Chelsea | Manchester United | Tottenham
Crystal Palace | Newcastle | West Bromwich Albion
Everton | Queens Park Rangers | West Ham
Hull | Southampton

Many of them date back to the 19th century. As well as their
official names listed above, they have nicknames -- some with
historical resonances that may be barely remembered, but the names
still linger on. We give you the nickname and you give us the
team name from the above list. For example, if we said the Habs,
you would say the Montreal Canadiens.

1. Baggies.
2. Magpies.
3. Gunners.
4. Saints.
5. Toffees.
6. Clarets.
7. Foxes.
8. Tigers.
9. Potters.
10. Eagles.

* Game 1, Round 10 - Freezing Cold Challenge Round

A. Canada's Coldest Places

Temperatures are in Celsius and facts are according to Environment
Canada.

A1. What Canadian city has the coldest winters, based on the
lowest average nighttime temperature in December, January,
and February? That temperature is -28.9°, and the same city
has the coldest-ever Canadian wind-chill reading of -64.0°.
In the spring, though, it sees almost 100 more hours of
sun than the second-place city.

A2. On 1947-02-03, the coldest-ever Canadian temperature was
recorded in Snag, Yukon. Within 3°, how cold was it?

B. Cold Books

B1. Who wrote the seminal true crime novel "In Cold Blood"?

B2. This 1963 novel by John le Carré portrayed Western espionage
methods as morally inconsistent with Western democracy and
values. It ends dramatically on the Berlin Wall. Name it.

C. Freezing Cold Movies

C1. "Fargo" is a homespun murder mystery set in the
snow-blanketed vistas of Minnesota and North Dakota.
What actress won an Oscar for her portrayal of cheerful
pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson?

C2. In a memorably freezing scene in "Doctor Zhivago", the
doctor and his lover Lara return to their ice-covered home,
now seized and the property of "the people". Who played
Lara?

D. Freezing Cold Ships

D1. On 1915-01-19, Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship became frozen
fast in an Antarctic ice floe. 10 months later, on
1915-11-21, the ship finally slipped below the surface.
Name this ill-fated ship.

D2. On 2014-10-01, Stephen Harper confirmed that a Franklin
expedition ship found a month earlier in the Arctic had
been identified. Name it.

E. NHL Winter Classic

E1. The precursor to the NHL Winter Classic, played outdoors
annually on New Years Day, was the Heritage Classic.
The first Heritage Classic was played on 2003-11-22.
Which team hosted that game?

E2. The 2015 Winter Classic was played at Nationals Park in
Washington DC. Name the visiting team.

F. Cold Biology

F1. What is the informal term, referencing a part of the body,
for a brief cranial pain or headache commonly associated
with the quick consumption of cold beverages or foods such
as ice cream or ice pops?

F2. What is the name for the superficial ulcers of the skin
that occur when a predisposed individual is repeatedly
exposed to cold temperatures?

Yellowknife. (Winnipeg is #2 for spring sunshine hours.)
4 for Dan Blum, Joshua, and Peter.

In Fahrenheit those values would be -20.0° and -83.2° respectively.
For Environment Canada's ranking of Canadian cities by various
meteorological and climatic statistics, see:

http://www.weatherstats.ca/winners.html

> A2. On 1947-02-03, the coldest-ever Canadian temperature was

-63.0° (accepting -60.0° to -66.0°). 4 for Joshua.

That's -81.4°F. Early reports indicated -82.6°F, which is -63.7°C,
but afterwards the weather service carefully examined the thermometer
as marked by the meteorologist and the slightly higher temperature is
what they finally decided on, so that's the record Environment Canada
now recognizes. See:

> B. Cold Books

> B1. Who wrote the seminal true crime novel "In Cold Blood"?

> F. Cold Biology

> F1. What is the informal term, referencing a part of the body,

Brain freeze. It's also called an ice cream headache, but I'm not
accepting that phrase as an answer since all parts of it were in
the question. So, 4 for Björn, Dan Blum, Marc, Joshua, Dan Tilque,
Pete, and Peter.

> F2. What is the name for the superficial ulcers of the skin
> that occur when a predisposed individual is repeatedly

Chilblains. 4 for Dan Blum and Marc.
