This is Rotating Quiz #160. It's a quiz quilt in the manner of
Robert Jen, only bigger -- and spelling will count.

The usual rules of conduct and posting apply. Answer slates must
be posted by noon Toronto time (zone -4) on Sunday, 2014-10-26,
which gives you 6 days and somewhat over 9 hours from the time of
posting. Have fun.

For those who weren't around when Robert was posting quiz quilts,
what that means is first that each question is to be answered by a
single word. (Where a person's name is requested, you MUST give
only the surname.) Then if you write those answers one below the
other in order, by taking *one letter from each word, either upward
or downward* in one of the following ways:

Vertically
Last letter of each word
Diagonally to/from one of the left corners

you will find another word or phrase ("the quilt"). The contest
subtitle is some sort of vague or cryptic hint indicating the quilt.

To keep the scoring in integers, I'll double Robert's numbers and
allow 2 points for each correct answer with a possibility of 1 for
close tries or misspelled answers. Getting the quilt is worth
8 points, and that'll be all-or-nothing.

In case of a tie, the first tiebreaker will be who got points on
the *most* questions; the second tiebreaker will be who got them
on the *hardest* questions; and the third tiebreaker will be who
posted first.

My thanks to Dan Blum for running RQ 159 and for choosing questions
that enabled me to win. The winner of RQ 160, in turn, will be the
first choice to set RQ 161, in whatever manner they prefer.

1. [Geography] By area, what is the world's largest landlocked
country?

2. [Religion] In Roman Catholicism, what term refers to the
supposed miraculous "substantial conversion" of the bread and
wine of the Eucharist?

3. [Sports] Name the star quarterback who, before turning pro,
changed the pronunciation of his name so it rhymed with the
trophy he hoped to win. He didn't win it, though. After several
years playing for Toronto, he returned to American football and
reached his greatest success with the Washington Redskins.

4. [Science] What is the scientific term that describes the
height of a water wave above the average height of the water,
or the analogous measurement for other types of waves?

5. [Archeology] After the death in 353 BC of the king whose name
is sometimes spelled Mausolus, a tomb was built that was so
magnificent it was declared one of the "seven wonders of the
world". But where was it? Give the ancient place name.

6. [Literature] The concept sometimes known in English as a
"superman" was introduced by a 19th-century book. The book
inspired a tone poem of the same title, which in the 20th
century was appropriately chosen as the theme music for the
movie "2001: A Space Odyssey". Who wrote the book?

7. [Music] The 1992 Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song
of the Year went to a father-daughter duet that was memorable
in part because the father had died long before. Name the title.

8. [History] Who was Prime Minister of the UK when the country
declared war against Germany in 1939?

9. [Culture] The various types of these include bronze, china,
gold, leather, paper, and silver. What are they?

10. [Entertainment] The concept of "method acting", or "the Method",
was popularized in North America by Lee Strasberg, but who was
the Russian actor-director that originated it? (In our alphabet.)

11. [Quilt] ?

HALICARNASSUS. 2 for Dan and Rob. 1 for Peter.

It was called "the Mausoleum" and the word has entered our language.
The place is now Bodrum, Turkey.

(Friedrich) NIETZSCHE. 2 for Dan and Jeff. 1 for Marc and Erland.

By "superman" or "overman", he meant the next stage in the evolution
of mankind, hence the connection with the movie. The title of
the book and the musical work was "Also sprach Zarathustra", or
in English, "Thus Spake Zarathustra".
