These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2018-01-29,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Bill Psychs and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see
my 2017-09-25 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 3, Round 2 - History - Battles

In each case, name the battle described.

1. In 490 BC, a large Persian force was destroyed by a smaller
Athenian force.

2. In 216 BC, Hannibal's Carthaginian army defeated the larger
army of the Roman Republic.

3. In 208, close to the Yangtze River, Liu Bei's and Sun Quan's
combined forces destroyed Cao Cao's much larger navy. This
battle was popularized by its depiction in the historical novel
"Romance of the Three Kingdoms".

4. In 1314, near Stirling Castle, a Scottish army under King
Robert I defeated an English army more than twice their number.

5. In 1415, a large French army was defeated by Henry V's much
smaller army.

6. In 1862 in Virginia, forces for the Union army under Major
General Burnside made repeated futile attacks against Confederate
forces commanded by General Lee.

7. On January 8, 1815, a British force of more than 8,000 men
attacked positions manned by 4,000 Americans commanded by
General Andrew Jackson, but were repelled. This was the last
major battle of the War of 1812.

8. In 1876, in Montana Territory, a certain lieutenant-colonel
attacked a superior force of Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and
Arapaho warriors. He was killed, along with most of his men.

9. In 1905, the Russian Baltic fleet travelled halfway around the
world before being defeated by the Japanese fleet in the straits
for which the battle is named.

10. This battle was one of the major turning points of World War II.
After months of fighting in and around the eponymous city, German
forces were finally surrounded by Soviet forces and defeated in
February 1943.

* Game 3, Round 3 - Entertainment - Voice Acting in Animated Disney Movies

Fredericksburg. 4 for Dan Blum.

The description does somewhat resemble the first battle of Bull Run,
but that was in 1861, Burnside was not yet a major general, and
Lee was not involved (the Confederate commanders were Beauregard
and Johnson). The second battle of Bull Run was in 1862, but this
time Burnside was not involved (Pope was the Union commander) and it
was mainly the Confederates who did the attacking.

New Orleans. 4 for Dan Blum, Joshua, Dan Tilque, Pete, and Marc.

The Treaty of Ghent had already been signed on December 24, 1814,
to end the war, but it wasn't effective until ratified by the US
Senate on February 16. In any case, at the time of the battle nobody
in North America even knew the treaty had been signed.

Little Bighorn (or Custer's Last Stand). 4 for Dan Blum, Joshua,
Dan Tilque, Pete, and Marc.

The name refers to a lesser branch of the Bighorn or Big Horn River.

* Game 3, Round 4 - Canadiana Geography - TTC Stations

Where you are asked for a station name, the full name is required,
e.g. "Sheppard-Yonge", not "Sheppard".

1. Part of the Line 1 subway extension into York Region, what is
the only TTC station named for a highway?

2. What station is the northern terminus of that extension?

3. What station on the future Eglinton Crosstown LRT will be located
at the intersection of Bathurst Street and Eglinton Avenue West?

4. When that line opens, Eglinton West will become an interchange
station -- and is to be given what new name?

5. What station on Danforth is currently planned to become an
interchange station if the Downtown Relief Line subway ever
gets built?

6. What is the only TTC subway station in the City of Toronto
without no connections to regular TTC bus or streetcar routes?

7. Two TTC stations were named after the city's former electoral
wards where they were located. Name *either*.

8. What street name has rapid transit stations with both "East"
and "West" suffixes?

9. What station was the original northern terminus of the Yonge
subway?

10. Name *either* original terminus for the Bloor-Danforth subway
when it opened in 1966.

* Game 3, Round 6 - Arts - Oh, David!

Whether as subject or as creator, the world of art is filled
with Davids. I have rearranged these questions in order of the
images on the handout:

http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/3-6/david.pdf

Unless otherwise indicated, name the artist -- keeping in mind
that, if "David" or "Goliath" does *not* appear in the question,
then David is the *artist's first name*.

There are two decoys, interspersed with the others, which you may
answer if you like for fun, but for no points.

1. A, "Fire Down on the Labrador".
2. B, a self-portrait.
3. C, "David".

4. No, there is no image D. Image E is a 1793 painting by
Jacques-Louis David -- give the *title*.

5. F, "A Bigger Splash".
6. G, "David and Uriah".
7. (Decoy.) H, "David".
8. I, "David with the Head of Goliath".
9. J, "David".

10. Give the *title* of image K, a 1784 painting by Jacques-Louis David.

11. (Decoy.) L, "Against Goliath 2".
12. M, "Pink Reflections, Bishop's Pond".

Sorry, I first posted this in the previous thread. Apologies if
you see it twice. Please post responses in either thread, but
preferably this one.

Even with the double negative, I'm not going to attempt this question.

Highway 407.

Considering that the 407 is an expressway, with no pedestrians
allowed, that naming struck me as a really weird idea -- until
I realized that a large parking lot has been built alongside the
new station.

> 2. What station is the northern terminus of that extension?

Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

Forest Hill.

Cedarvale.

Pape.

Chester.

Sorry about the typo that made nonsense of the posted wording.
I presume everyone understood the intent, anyway.

> 7. Two TTC stations were named after the city's former electoral

St. Andrew, St. Patrick.

> 8. What street name has rapid transit stations with both "East"

Lawrence.

Eglinton. (Terminus from 1954 until 1973.)

Keele, Woodbine.

And so this round never happened. (Where *is* Stephen Perry when
we need him?)

David Blackwood.

David Bowie. (David Robert Jones.)

Donatello. (Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi.)

"The Death of Marat" ("La Mort de Marat" or "Marat Assassiné").
4 for Dan.

His name is in the painting. And not only that, but it came up
yesterday at sporcle.com, along with one other artwork from this
round's handout:

https://www.sporcle.com/games/MoMosMoProblems/hands-in-art

> 5. F, "A Bigger Splash".

David Hockney. 4 for, uh, everyone -- Dan and Joshua.

> 6. G, "David and Uriah".

Rembrandt. (Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn.)

> 7. (Decoy.) H, "David".

Michelangelo.

> 8. I, "David with the Head of Goliath".

Caravaggio. (Michelangelo Merisi, or Merigi or Amerighi, da
Caravaggio.)

> 9. J, "David".

Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

> 10. Give the *title* of image K, a 1784 painting by Jacques-Louis David.

"Oath of the Horatii" ("Le Serment des Horaces"). 4 for Joshua.

> 11. (Decoy.) L, "Against Goliath 2".

Richard L. Minns.

> 12. M, "Pink Reflections, Bishop's Pond".

David Milne.
