As usual, this round is running concurrently with other rounds
not about current events.

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2015-12-08,
and should be interpreted accordingly. If any answers have changed
due to newer news, you are still expected to give the answers that
were correct on that date.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Bloor St. Irregulars,
and are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
see my 2015-08-18 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition".

* Final (2015-12-08), Round 1 - Current Events

1. "I can't wait to get it out in front of as many people as
possible!" -- These were the words of Frederick Ghahramani last
week, speaking about his latest purchase, a new nude painting
of which man born in 1959?

2. Mary-Kate Olsen got married last week. She married the
46-year-old half-brother of which former world leader?

3. The currency of *which country* was last week added to the
International Monetary Fund's group of elite currencies with
special drawing rights?

4. For the first time since 1920, the "New York Times" ran an
editorial on the front page last week. What was the subject
of the editorial?

5. "The article in this space was removed by our printer in
<answer 5>. The 'International New York Times' and its
editorial staff had no role in its removal." Authorities
in which country censored the "New York Times" last week?

6. The 2015 UN Climate Change Conference is currently being held
in which Paris suburb, best known for its historic airport?

7. Canadian man, Kai Xu, appeared in federal court in Michigan last
week, having been arrested for trying to illegally smuggle
animals out of the United States. Authorities noticed suspicious
bulging in his pants. He was found with 51 of *what animal*
in his pants?

8. Priscilla Chan last week gave birth to a beautiful bouncing
girl, Max. Who, apparently, is the father?

9. Provide the name of the new general manager of the Toronto
Blue Jays.

10. Which man, who holds the record for the most seasons played
with the same team, last week announced he intends to retire
from the NBA at the end of the season?

11. Which team won their first Davis Cup since 1936 when they
defeated Belgium last week? Be precise.

12. Scott Weiland passed away last week. Between 1989 and 2013,
Weiland was the lead singer of *which alternative rock band*
that had hits such as "Vasoline", "Sour Girl", and "Interstate
Love Song"?

13. Faculty members are speaking out against the decision to
name former Conservative cabinet minister James Moore as the
next Chancellor of which university?

14. A South African appeals court last week convicted Oscar
Pistorius of murder, overturning a lower court's conviction
on the lesser charge of manslaughter. Provide the name of the
victim in the crime.

15. The family of Michael Garron donated an unprecedented
$50,000,000 to a hospital in Toronto. As a result, the hospital
will be changing its name. What is the current name of the
hospital?

The general answer would be United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern
Ireland, as that is what it says in the results. The more precise answer
would be Scotland, since Andy Murray did most of the work.

And the current-events game is over and JOSHUA KREITZER has won.
Hearty congratulations!

As I have enough QFTCIBSI questions from other rounds to last
through the first season of 2016, I won't be asking the nicholheads
to supply their questions from that season for reuse. Consequently,
QFTCI current-events games will probably return in the second season
of 2016, which is to say in May, to be produced by the Usual Suspects.

Stephen Harper. The word "new" may have been misleading; the
picture was actually painted 3 years ago (as a political satire),
but was previously out of public view because it was owned by a
civil servant who figured Harper and his allies were vindictive
enough that she needed to stay anonymous while he was in power.
