Given that he is still alive, "was" in this context means "when he was
playing top-level tennis". That's how 8/10 entrants interpreted it.

If the questions are not precise, the answers cannot be specific.
You asked what nationality *was* Ivanisevic. He *was* Yugoslavian;
he *is* Croatian.

Nah, had Calvin posted in language like French and Polish which makes a
clear distinction completed and uncompleted actions in the past, you
may have had a point.

In French, you have the choices:

Quel nationalité était Goran Ivansevic?
Quel natioanlité a été Goran Ivansevic?
Quel natioanlité fut Goran Ivansevic?

That latter two are, as far as I have been taught, equivalent in meaning,
but differ in style, and the answer to that question would have to be
Yugoslavian as he still is Croatian.

In English and other Germanic languages there is not really this
distinction. There are several tenses for the past - past and perfect -
but the distinction really is har to grasp.

There is yet one more complication. The Yugoslavian constitution talked of
nations. More precisely it use the word "narod", not "nacija", but as
I understan "narod" means more than just people. Had you asked Goran
Ivansevic of his nationatlity in 1990, when Yugoslavia was still only
cracking at the seams, it is perfectly possible he would have answered
Croatian.

Even in Canada they refer to their aboriginal peoples as being of the
"First Nations." There's a difference between a nation and a state.
