These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2015-11-09,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Bloor St. Irregulars,
and are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
see my 2015-08-18 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 007, Round 2 - Sports - Common Bonds

As we noted in last week's audio round, the new James Bond movie
"Spectre" has just been released. Rounds 2-10 this week will have a
"James Bond" theme throughout -- though not necessarily involving
the character of that name. (But as you know, none of them will
be Canadiana -- this week the Canadiana round was Current Events.)

Round 2 is about "Common Bonds". You will be given the names
of three athletes from the same country. Name that country.
Be advised that the country is not necessarily the one where each
athlete was actually born, but is the one that they represent
in competition. Names are written here without diacriticals.

1. Samantha Stosur, Ian Thorpe, Ricky Ponting.
2. Retief Goosen, Mark Boucher, Francois Pienaar.
3. Rio Ferdinand, Mo Farah, Chris Hoy.
4. Patrik Elias, Roman Sebrle, Tomas Rosicky.
5. Juan Martin Del Potro, Cristian Simari Birkner, Manu Ginobili.
6. Paul Tergat, Duncan Kibet, David Rudisha.
7. Sergei Martynov, Victoria Azarenka, Darya Domracheva.
8. Kristaps Porzingis, Arturs Irbe, Ernests Gulbis.
9. Roberto Carlos, Leandro Barbosa, Helio Castroneves.
10. Katarina Witt, Dirk Nowitzki, Mario Gotze.

* Game 007, Round 3 - Miscellaneous - Uncommon Bonds

Round 2 was about common bonds. Now we move to *uncommon* Bonds
-- semi-famous people with the last name Bond, who you may or may
not have heard about.

1. Bond, Eddie Bond. Eddie Bond was a musician who rather
infamously told *which 18-year-old* in 1953 that he should "stick
to driving a truck, because you'll never make it as a singer"?

2. Bond, Linda Bond. Between 2011 and 2013, Linda Bond of Canada
served as the 19th General of *which international organization*?
This organization was founded in 1865 in London, England.

3. Bond, Larry Bond. Larry Bond is a video game designer whose most
famous games include "Red Storm Rising", a game that he designed
in conjunction with *which author* who wrote a techno-thriller
of the same title in 1986?

4. Bond, Frederick Bligh Bond. Frederick Bligh Bond was an English
architect who excavated a monastery in *which town* in Somerset,
synonymous with a 5-day music festival held in August each year?

5. Bond, Michael Bond. Michael Bond is a British author, born in
1926, who most famously created *which title character* from
Peru, who first appeared in books in 1958?

6. Bond, Shirley Bond. Shirley Bond is a Liberal politician
who served as the Deputy Premier of *which Canadian province*
from 2005 to 2009? She is currently the provincial Minister
of Jobs, Tourism, and Skills Training there, as well as the
Minister responsible for Labour.

7. Bond, Julian Bond. Julian Bond was a civil-rights activist
in the United States who was a politician in Georgia from 1967
to 1987 and was the chair of the NAACP from 1998 to 2010.
In 1977, he became the first black political figure to host
*which TV show*?

8. Bond, Jason Bond. Jason Bond is a professor of biology who
specializes in spiders. He has discovered two species of
trap-door spiders, one of which he named after Neil Young.
In 2008, Bond named the other species of trap-door spider
after *which late-night host* while appearing on his TV show?

9. Bond, Casey Bond. Casey Bond is a retired baseball player who
played for the San Francisco Giants. He is now a Hollywood
actor. Casey Bond played the part of another former baseball
player, relief pitcher Chad Bradford, in *which 2011 movie*?

10. Bond, Alan Bond. Alan Bond was an Australian businessman
whose career has in some sense tracked that of Conrad Black -- he
owned media, he went to jail. In 1983, he bankrolled Australia's
success with which sporting trophy? The Australian challenger
was the first one from outside of the US to ever win this trophy.

The original game was just "Game 7" of the season. But once
I thought of it -- about 30 seconds before I was going to post
this set of rounds! -- adding the "00" was irresistible.

In the original game this was the second-hardest round after the
audio round, even though #10 was the easiest question in the game.

Glastonbury. 4 for Dan Blum, Peter, Calvin, and Stephen.

As Gareth popped in to say: June, not August. In fact the festival
that's now counted as the first in the series was in September 1970,
but all the later ones have been in June or in June and July.
Where someone got August from, I don't know.

AFIK Rio Ferdinand has never represented Great Britain ot United
Kingdom, only England.

On the other hand, would the Scotsman Chris Hoy agree to represent England?

Flawed questions, but what can you expect from quiz masters in Toronto? :-)
In any case, since Farah and even less Hoy has represented England, I
think Mark's ruling is correct.

Fatally flawed question. Mo Farah has represented England and Great
Britain, Rio Ferdinand has represented England, and no other nation and
Chris Hoy has represented Scotland and Great Britain. Where is the
common denominator?

As as I can tell this is correct, so there is no correct answer.
In that case, I'll accept all of those possible answers. So it's
4 for Pete, Peter, Erland, Calvin, and Stephen.
