These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2014-10-20,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Unnatural Axxxe, and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see
my 2014-09-15 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 5, Round 7 - Geography - Official Languages

I'm sorry, I don't speak -- um -- whatever it is you're speaking.

The following is a linguistic round, involving official languages
of various countries (many of which also have other official
languages). In each case, we give you a language, and you name
the country, or one of the countries, that officially claims it.

1. Khmer.
2. Tagalog.
3. Walloon.
4. Amharic.
5. Catalan.
6. Pashto.
7. Malagasy.
8. Urdu.
9. Swahili (you have 4 possible answers here).
10. Among this country's 10 official languages are English, Sotho,
Tsonga, Xhosa, and Zulu.

* Game 5, Round 8 - Science - Alternative Sex Acts

Birds do it, bees do it, even spiny monotremes do it. Let's do it.
Let's have a trivia round on plant and animal reproduction.

1. By what means do mushrooms reproduce?

2. By what extraterrestrially-influenced process do the eggs and
sperm of coral meet?

3. Who's your daddy? -- What is unusual about how the seahorse
gives birth?

4. Name either of the mammal species that are monotremes, i.e. they
lay eggs.

5. Many species of sharks and fish, including the common guppy,
platys, and swordtails, are ovoviviparous. What does this mean?

6. A male donkey and a female horse produce what offspring?

7. When a butterfly drinks from a flower, it brushes against
the anthers and gets covered with pollen. When the butterfly
visits another flower, the pollen attaches to what part of that
other flower? (Despite the name, no trauma usually results.)

8. The male reproductive organ of a flowering plant is called what?

9. Where are a snail's reproductive organs?

10. An earthworm needs another earthworm to reproduce despite that
fact that it's already equipped with what?

By means of tide (high/low water)

They may mate with themself, so I guess beside each other

Both sexes, ie they are both male and female, but can not mate with
themselves, unlike the snails above ...

I believe Erland was right to say that this one is simply a version of
French and in Belgium is officially called French. Similarly, their
other major language, sometimes called Flemish, is officially Dutch.

(Airborne) spores. 4 for Dan Blum, Peter, Joshua, Dan Tilque, Marc,

They are ejected and drift together with the tide. Any reference
to drifting in the ocean was sufficient. 4 for Dan Blum, Björn,
Marc, Jeff, and Rob.

The male gives birth (having received eggs in its pouch from the
female). 4 for everyone.

Platypus, echidna. 4 for Dan Blum, Peter, Björn, Jason, Joshua,

> 5. Many species of sharks and fish, including the common guppy,

Their eggs "hatch" inside the body so that they then give birth
to live offspring. Any reference to live birth was sufficient,
even though that would fail to make the distinction from viviparous
species like humans. 4 for Dan Blum, Dan Tilque, Marc, and Jeff.

> 6. A male donkey and a female horse produce what offspring?

A mule. 4 for Björn, Erland, Jason, Joshua, Dan Tilque, Marc,
and Rob. 3 for Dan Blum. 2 for Peter.

A "jenny" is a female donkey. If one of those produces an offspring
with a male horse, it's called a *hinny*. As for "ass", that's
another name for donkey.

The stigma, but this is a part of the pistil and the hint could relate
to either. Unlike the original game, I'm accepting either answer.

Stamen. 4 for Dan Blum, Peter, Joshua, Marc, and Rob.

In its head, or more precisely, its neck. "On top" was not specific

Both male and female sex organs, i.e. it's a hermaphrodite.

Jeff, and Rob.

I'm going to challenge this. Or at least say that my answer (full moon)
is just as important as the tide. Corals synchronize their spawning by
detecting the full moon. Synchronization greatly increases the chances
of reproduction being successful. Furthermore, since all corals in a
reef spawn at once, it overwhelms the ability of egg predators to
consume all of them.

That's interesting. Let's see, the US government's NOAA has:

http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/kits/corals/coral06_reproduction.html

# Because colonies may be separated by wide distances, this release
# must be both precisely and broadly timed, and usually occurs in
# response to multiple environmental cues (Veron, 2000).
#
# The long-term control of spawning may be related to temperature,
# day length and/or rate of temperature change (either increasing
# or decreasing). The short-term (getting ready to spawn) control
# is usually based on lunar cues. The final release, or spawn,
# is usually based on the time of sunset (Veron, 2000).

The Australian government's GBRMPA has:

http://www.gbrmpa.gov.au/about-the-reef/corals/coral-reproduction

# One of the most spectacular events to occur on the Great Barrier
# Reef is the annual synchronised spawning of corals.
#
# This mass reproduction only happens once a year...
#
# The mass spawning occurs after a full moon and only after rising
# water temperatures have stimulated the maturation of the gametes
# within the adult coral. The day length, tide height and salinity
# levels also appear to be factors in deciding when the event
# will happen.
#
# ...the time of year that corals spawn depends on their location.
# Those on inshore reefs usually start spawning one to six nights
# after the first full moon in October, whereas those in outer reefs
# spawn during November or December.

So the full moon is indeed involved, at least for most species, but
it's only the means of synchronization and I don't see how it can
reasonably be described as a "process". Still, I guess I have to
give this an "almost correct". 3 for Dan Tilque, then.
