These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2018-04-03,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Bill Psychs and are

been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see
my 2017-09-25 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian

** Final, Round 6 - Sports

* Golden Ball Winners

The Ballon d'Or, or Golden Ball, is an annual award to honor the
male soccer player deemed to have performed the best over the
previous year, based on voting by journalists. From the brief
description, name the player.

1. Often considered the best player in the world, he has spent
his entire professional career with Barcelona. He is Argentina's
all-time leading goal-scorer and has won the Ballon d'Or 5 times,
including 4 years in a row.

2. He is another player to be considered the best player in the
world. He too has won the Ballon d'Or 5 times, and he was
named the best Portuguese player of all time by the Portuguese
Football Federation in 2015.

3. This French player, nicknamed Zizou, won the Ballon d'Or in 1998.
He infamously head-butted Marco Materazzi during the 2006 World
Cup final.

* World Cup Records

More soccer! In honor of the upcoming world cup in Russia, a few
questions about FIFA world cup records.

4. Which country set the record for worst overall performance by
a host team? They are the only host team to be eliminated in
the first round.

5. Which country set the record for most goals scored in one game
by one team, with 10 goals against El Salvador in 1982?

6. The record for attendance at a World Cup final was 114,600,
when Argentina played West Germany in 1986. What was the host
country that time?

* Canadian Freestyle Wrestlers

7. Which Canadian won a gold medal in men's 69 kg freestyle
wrestling at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney? He was born in
Nigeria.

8. Which Canadian won a gold medal in women's 48 kg freestyle
wrestling at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing? She is also an
11-time national champion.

9. Which Canadian is the reigning Olympic champion in women's 75
kg freestyle wrestling? She won gold at the 2016 Olympics in
Rio de Janeiro.

10. Abner Doubleday used to be credited with inventing baseball
on a cow pasture within the village of Cooperstown in 1839.
However, what some historians now recognize as the first

Ontario town in 1838?

11. In 1991, with a 21-year professional career and more than
3,000 strikeouts, who was the first Canadian to be inducted
into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown NY?

on the Toronto Islands playing for a team called the Providence
Grays. What *minor league* was the team part of?

Actually, I think there were a lot more people at the final in 1950,
just below 200 000. However, technically it was a not a final, but
it turned out be entirely decisive game in a final round of four teams.

Beachville.

I never heard of the place either. It's on the upper Thames River
about halfway between London and Cambridge, and while there seem
to be some small lakes or reservoirs nearby connected to the river,
I don't see anything that looks like a beach, so I guess it's named
after a person.
