Xerox and Band-aids, of course.
Some of the others we've already come up with are:
Fridgidare (a particularly NYC thing, we think)
Vaseline
Jeep
Coke
Can anyone add to our list?
Laura
Q-tips
Xerox
Fritos
Kool-Aid
Saran Wrap
These are all that I (and my roommate) could come up with on short
notice. Any others?

Thermos and Zipper are a couple that most people don't know.
Stetson, too... I'm sure some people use it to refer to 'just any' hat...

I believe "cellophane" was also originally a brand name.

Well, aspirin was a brand name. I don't think anyone's mentioned

TV guide ???
surely a guide to what is on TV will obviously be called a TV guide
I think in some cases someone has used the "obvious" name first and so has
bagged it as a trade name - I don't think necessarily that we have come to know
the products because of this, rather that we would always have called them
this but someone got to it first.
Oh and since you mentioned Scotch-tape, was Sellotape not also a brand name
once.

I've heard "Frigidaire." What do you think of someone with a
Frigidaire oven and a Hotpoint refrigerator?
"Icebox" is sometimes used for refrigerator, but that's beside the
point.

I once knew the name for those kinds of words. I no longer remember it.
Was it a figment of my imagination, or does someone out there know the
what it is? The word I'm thinking of is not "generic".

and I have nothing to sell !!)

I believe Zipper and Asprin both started off as brand-names...
David
Zambonis are indeed made by only one company; started by
the Zamboni family (and might still be owned by them).
They're not really marketable enough to spur a whole lot
of competition, especially since Zamboni is indeed a
well-known "ice paver" name. (Especially after the
famous-and-played-at-every-Canadian-hockey-rink-at-least-
once-every-half-hour song: "I Wanna Drive The Zamboni". )
And the doggone things last half of forever.

I haven't seen Escalator mentioned yet...
Here's a couple more:
Velcro
Jacuzzi
Jet Ski
Walkman
Chapstick
Don't see the connection, myself.
Fed Ex
Xerox
"Fax" would not count, because it is not a company, or a specific
product. Q-tips, Band-Aids and Saran Wrap would not count because they
are used more often as nouns ... though you could force them to be verbs,
I suppose.
But I'm thinking of something like "Fed Ex this package to London" even
if you are using DHL, or "Xerox this for everyone in the department" even
if the copier is made by Canon.

Yes, that part I'm sure he understood. The missing link is between
Budweiser and beer. Have you ever tasted the stuff?
