Because it's not right.

The green jersey goes to the leader of the Points competition (which is
usually, but not always, the top sprinter). You get points for high
finishes on stages (more points for flat stages) and in intermediate
sprints, which favours people who finish at the very front on the many
flat stages.

As someone noted (sorry, forgot who) Peter Sagan has won it recently,
and he's not an outright sprinter in the Mark Cavendish mould, but a
good-enough sprinter with a talent for getting into break-aways who can
hold it together in the mountains. (And a penchant for popping wheelies,
honest intervies, a sequence of terrible haircuts and coming second on
stages). Peter Sagan is the man. But I digress.

Yes, I was just simplifying things. I would have accepted any answer that contained sprint.

Points alone is not specific enough as the polka dot is also awarded on a points basis.

Sure it is (as is the FA Premier League and my local dominoes league).

But the green jersey competition is *called* the Points Classification. That's the correct name of the competition for which the green jersey is awarded. It's not a description, it's the name of the competition.

The person who is winning it is called the leader of the Points Classification.
