Well, I can equally use pauses ...

If someone asked you "what is seven minus *breath* three plus two?",
don't tell me you'd think the intended answer was unambiguously six.

No, though I'd prefer the word "quantity" rather than a pause -- that's
the usage I picked up at some point in my education.

But in a contest conducted in writing, there'd have to be some indication
that such a pause, bracketing, or the like was intended, and there wasn't.

Yeah, I know (even if I did temporarily think it was in Manchester)
-- that's why I said Ireland. I was assuming Northern Irishmen would
play on the Irish team, since there isn't a UK team. If that's wrong,
then no point for me.

He did play his best football in Manchester (for Manchester United). As I'm sure you know, the airport near Manchester is the imaginatively named "Manchester Airport" (formerly Ringway).

Ah. I must have somehow happened to hear about that.

Well, I knew it was called that the last time *I* used it, but I had to
look it up to see that it was *still* called that.

I don't think the Blue half of the City would stand for it to be renamed
after a Red.

Mark does indeed have some interesting ideas about football. Players from
Northern Ireland playing in Irish national team - that's an idea which also
would not go well with half (roughly) of the NI population...

It's not quite that simple. There are many sports (notably Rugby Union and
Cricket) where there is just one team representing the whole of the island
of Ireland.
