> 1. The major-league baseball record for home runs by a rookie, owned
> for two decades by slugger Mark McGwire, was smashed this week.
> Name the rookie who now holds this distinction.
Aaron Judge (New York Yankees). 4 for Marc and Pete.
He hit 52 home runs; McGwire hit 49 in 1987 with the Oakland A's.
> 2. The FedEx Cup, awarded to the winner of the PGA Tour's annual
> golf playoffs and worth a $10,000,000 prize, went to another
> new winner this year. Who was he?
Justin Thomas. 4 for Pete.
> 3. Donald Trump endorsed an unsuccessful Republican primary
> candidate for the Alabama senate seat formerly occupied by
> attorney-general Jeff Sessions. Name that politician who failed
> to win on Trump's coattails in that reddest of red states.
Luther Strange. No points for just "Luther"! 4 for Peter, Dan Blum,
Marc, and Joshua.
> 4. German chancellor Angela Merkel was reelected for her 4th term
> this past week, but the real news was the performance of an
> ultra-right party that will now sit in the Bundestag as the
> third-largest party with 13% of the vote. In German or English,
> what is its name?
Alternative für Deutschland (Alternative for Germany). No points
for just the initials! 4 for Joshua and Pete.
> 5. One of the controversial tax changes proposed by finance minister
> Bill Morneau would end the practice of allowing professionals
> who form corporations to shelter income from higher tax rates by
> assigning it to family members. What term is used to describe
> this practice?
Income sprinkling.
> 6. Prince Harry made his first public appearance with his girlfriend
> at the Invictus Games in Toronto. What is her name?
Meghan Markle. 4 for Peter, Marc, and Joshua.
Considering that they've been known to be a couple for about a
year (and actually had been together for months before that),
I was rather surprised to hear it was their first time together
in public. You may remember that as long ago as November there
was a QFTCI current-events question which also asked for her name,
saying he was visiting Toronto and apparently this was to see her.
(She's American, but acts on a cable TV series that's shot here.)
> 7. One of the most surprising parts of the federal government's new
> cultural policy announced last week is the participation of
> Netflix in financing Canadian programming and distribution.
> What is the minimum that the Internet streaming giant has agreed
> to spend?
$500,000,000.
> 8. Saudi Arabia was in the news last week for something not related
> to oil. The country will never be the same again, said one
> Saudi. What change was announced?
Women will be permitted to drive. (Not immediately; people such
as cops have to be trained to deal with this novelty. But I did
not insist on that detail.) 4 for Peter, Dan Blum, Bruce, Marc,
Dan Tilque, Erland, Joshua, and Pete.
> 9. A pipeline which has already been approved by the federal
> government is in jeopardy thanks to a Federal Court of Appeal
> ruling that the government failed in its duty to protect the
> interests of an indigenous band which claimed the pipeline plan
> violated its rights without consultation. Name this pipeline
> that is again facing difficulties.
Kinder Morgan Trans-Mountain. (Either part was sufficient.)
> 10. A famous Winnipeg-born TV host died last week at age 96.
> He was best known for hosting "Let's Make a Deal". Name him.
Monty Hall. 4 for Peter, Dan Blum, Bruce, Marc, Dan Tilque, Jason,
Joshua, and Pete.
> * Game 4 (2017-10-16), Round 1 - Current Events
> 1. Toronto sports teams haven't won many regular-season or
> championship trophies lately. But one professional team in
> the city, the Toronto Football Club of Major League Soccer,
> has clinched the MLS regular-season championship. What's the
> trophy for that called?
Supporters' Shield. 4 for Pete.
> 2. Which country's qualification last week for the 2018 FIFA World
> Cup was notable, as it made them the country with the smallest
> population ever to play in the Finals tournament?
Iceland (330,000). 4 for Peter, Erland, and Pete.
> 3. One of Spain's autonomous communities held a referendum
> on sovereignty, which passed by a huge margin, but with a low
> turnout because the Spanish government had declared it illegal.
> In English, what is the name of this would-be secessionist
> region?
Catalonia. "Catalan" is the adjective (or the language they speak),
but it was accepted on protest in the original game, so full points
for that also. Barcelona, however, is only its capital city. 4 for
Peter, Dan Blum, Bruce, Marc, Dan Tilque, Erland, Joshua, and Pete.
> 4. The Liberal government is in hot water due to a plan described by
> the Canada Revenue Agency to add a new category to taxable
> benefits for employees. The government immediately squashed
> the plan. What were they going to begin taxing?
Employee discounts (on retail sales, fast food, etc.). "Free tea
or coffee" was not close enough, as it might apply to jobs other
than food service.
> 5. President Trump seems to be waging war with senior members of
> his own party. This past week he tweeted insults at a leading
> Republican senator, who tweeted back, describing the White
> House as an "adult day care center". Name the senator in this
> war of words.
Bob Corker (Tennessee). 4 for Dan Blum, Bruce, Marc, Dan Tilque,
Jason, Joshua, and Pete.
> 6. Also thanks to Trump and his threats, the North American Free
> Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is very much in danger. Prime Minister
> Trudeau was in Washington last week to meet with Trump, then
> headed to Mexico to meet with its president. Who's he?
Enrique Peña Nieto. Either surname was acceptable, and I scored
"Neta" as almost correct. 4 for Dan Blum and Pete. 3 for Erland.
> 7. In British Columbia, a well-known former radio talk-show host and
> Social Credit cabinet minister died last week at age 95.
> Name him.
Rafe Mair.
> 8. The US and Israel have withdrawn from a UN agency set up to
> protect cultural and natural heritage, claiming the agency has
> shown an anti-Israeli bias. Which agency?
UNESCO. 4 for everyone -- Peter, Dan Blum, Bruce, Marc, Dan Tilque,
Erland, Jason, Joshua, and Pete.
> 9. Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi, named the best mayor in the world
> in 2014, is facing a hard-fought battle from a more conservative
> challenger who has served as the president of the now-defunct
> Alberta PC Party. Polls revealed last week that it will be a
> close race. What is the challenger's name?
Bill Smith. (How could Smith & Guessin' resist this one?)
Some polls before the election showed Smith leading by anywhere from
9 to 17 percentage points -- but Nenshi actually beat him by 7 points,
51% to 44%. Shades of "The Literary Digest" in 1936.
> 10. In the aftermath of the Las Vegas massacre, there were calls
> to ban a device which enables the shooter to increase the
> rate of fire of semi-automatic guns and rifles, making them
> more lethal. These devices were used on some of the Las Vegas
> murderer's weapons. What is the common term for these devices?
Bump stocks. 4 for Dan Blum, Bruce, Marc, Dan Tilque, Erland, Jason,
Joshua, and Pete.
They guide the gun's motion as it returns from its recoil so that
the trigger bumps against the shooter's finger, initiating another
shot faster than the finger could move on its own. True ingenuity
in design -- and in realizing that it would effectively circumvent
existing US law -- all in the name of facilitating mass killing.
But to get back to trivia -- the scores, if there are no errors:
