And now we're into the second week of new Canadian Inquisition
season, written by the Red Smarties, so it's time for some current
events.

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on the dates
indicated below, and should be interpreted accordingly. If any
answers have changed due to newer news, you are still expected to
give the answers that were correct on that date.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Red Smarties and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation of
current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting of
other rounds. For further information see my 2019-01-22 companion
posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 1 (2019-09-16), Round 1 - Current Events

1. Two of the candidates in the riding of Beauce [sounds like
"boats" without the T] are Maxime Bernier of the People's
Party of Canada -- and Maxime Bernier of what party?

2. A senior intelligence official at the RCMP was arrested and
7 charges laid. He was accused of sharing or preparing to
share safeguarded or operational information with a foreign
entity or terrorist group. Name him.

3. Possibly to counteract poor publicity recently about another
special edition, "Monopoly Socialism", Hasbro announced it
was launching a new edition of Monopoly, which has now gone
on pre-sale. What is the name of this newest edition?

4. Mississauga announced last week it would hold a rally at
Celebration Square on Sunday (yesterday) to honor US Open winner
Bianca Andreescu. What is the *name* of the rally?

5. Saturday morning, the world's largest oil-processing plant
was attacked, taking out nearly 5% of the global daily output.
Name either the plant or the Yemeni rebels who said they did it.

6. On Monday evening, Donald Trump tweeted that he had fired his
National Security Advisor. Who?

7. Actress Felicity Huffman received her sentence in the college
cheating scandal last week. The sentence included a fine,
community service, and how long in prison?

8. This singer, known for "Two Tickets to Paradise" And "Take Me
Home Tonight", passed away Friday. Who?

9. This Team Canada bobsleigh (i.e. bobsled) team member announced
she is seeking her release so she can try out for the US team.
Name her.

10. Mitch Marner and the Leafs finally reached a deal. Within
$500,000, how much is the 6-year deal worth? You must answer
in US dollars, since that's what he's getting paid in.

* Game 2 (2019-09-23), Round 1 - Current Events

1. This Blue Jay hit for the cycle last week. It made him the
third player in the history of the franchise to do it, and
it made him and his father Craig the second father-son duo in
major-league baseball to both do it. Name him. (The surname
is sufficient.)

2. Arguably the best Canadian ice-dance team in history, they've
announced they are stepping away from the sport after 22 years
as on-ice partners. Name them both -- sorry, asking for just
one name would've been too easy.

3. This week the board of the London Stock Exchange comprehensively
rejected *whose* shock £32,000,000,000 takeover attempt?

4. GM workers in Oshawa and St. Catharines were temporarily laid
off late last week. Why?

5. The 2019 TIFF wrapped up last week, with the Grolsch People's
Choice Award going to what movie?

6. Also at TIFF, which movie received the $30,000 Canada Goose
award for the best Canadian feature film?

7. A man named Steven Weber drowned on Thursday at the Manta
Resort off the coast of Tanzania, where he was staying with his
girlfriend Kenesha Antoine in an underwater room. What was he
doing at the time?

8. On Friday an appeals court in California upheld the denial of
parole for which former Manson follower?

9. Also on Friday, hundreds of citizens took to the streets in Cairo
and other Egyptian cities. Name the person whose removal they
were calling for.

10. According to a study published September 19 in the journal
"Science", bird populations in Canada and the US have declined
since 1970 by what percentage? Answer within 4 percentage
points.

Proposing marriage. 4 for Pete and Erland.

Here's the underwater room:

http://www.themantaresort.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Sleeping-under-water-at-night-at-your-honeymoon-705x520.jpg

It costs $1,700 per night -- I assume that's US dollars -- with a
minimum 3-night stay. It's located about 250-300 m (800-1,000 feet)
offshore and 10 m (30-35 feet) below the surface. Weber wrote a note,
enclosed it in a plastic bag, swam down to the outside of the room,
and held the note up to the window. Antoine accepted the proposal.
But the note began with the words "I can't hold my breath long enough
to tell you everything I love about you" -- and, sadly, it seems he
was right.

After that awful story, here's a picture of a couple who had a more
pleasant surprise immediately after they became engaged:

http://shawglobalnews.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/deer-bomb-2.jpg

And while I'm on the theme, some similar wedding-day surprises
that I came across while searching:

Three people tried the answser 23%. Was that a coincidence or did
that come from a similar news story elsewhere?

In my case at least it was a coincidence. I just picked a number that
seemed decently likely.
