These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2018-01-15,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Bill Psychs and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see
my 2017-09-25 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

** Game 1, Round 9 - Miscellaneous - Fast Food Chains

In each case, name that chain.

1. Founded in San Bernardino CA, this chain has locations in over
120 countries.

2. Founded in Jacksonville FL, this chain is now owned by a
Canadian-based parent company named Restaurant Brands
International.

3. Founded in Arabi LA, this chain has featured "Annie the Chicken
Queen" in its commercials since 2009.

4. Founded in Corbin KY, this chain is famous for its trade-secret
original recipe of 11 herbs and spices.

5. Founded in Richmond Hill ON, this chain was originally known
for making its French fries from fresh P.E.I. potatoes.

6. Founded in Hamilton ON, this chain is ubiquitous in Canada but
has had challenges expanding into the US.

7. Founded in Columbus OH, this chain was named after the founder's
fourth child.

8. Founded in Downey CA, this chain once had a promotion to coincide
with the re-entry of the Mir space station.

9. Founded in Wichita KS, this chain invented the stuffed crust
pizza.

10. Founded in Toronto, this chain's phone numbers usually end in
"1111".

** Game 1, Round 10 - Challenge Round - Keys

* A. Computer Keys

Please keep your eyes away from your keyboard until you have finished
thinking about these questions!

In each question we will name one character on a key and you must
name the other one that is produced on a typical modern QWERTY
keyboard by changing the shift setting. For example, if we said
"4" you would answer "$" -- and vice versa.

A1. "1".
A2. "+".

* B. Florida Keys

B1. What is the westernmost city in the Florida Keys? It is
the county seat of Monroe County and only 94 miles from Cuba.

B2. The biggest island in the Florida Keys is this northern
island that calls itself the Diving Capital of the World.
Name it.

* C. Famous Keys in Entertainment

C1. This American R&B/hip-hop artist, born in 1981, has won
15 Grammy awards. Her top hits include "Fallin'", "No One",
and a collaboration with Jay-Z called "Empire State of Mind".
Name the artist.

C2. This American rock-band duo consists of Dan Auerbach on
guitar and Patrick Carney on drums. They achieved commercial
success beginning with their album "Brothers" and follow-ups
"El Camino" and "Turn Blue". Name the band.

* D. Keystone State

Pennsylvania is the "keystone state".

D1. Pennsylvania as a political entity began in 1681 when William
Penn received a royal charter. What English king granted
the royal charter? (If applicable, give name and number.)

D2. What Civil War battle fought in Pennsylvania in 1863 is
often considered the war's turning point?

* E. Key Aides (Canadiana)

E1. Who is the current chief of staff for Premier Kathleen Wynne?
Hint: nearly a decade ago when Stéphane Dion was the federal
Liberal leader, he was Dion's chief of staff.

E2. Who is Justin Trudeau's current chief of staff? In 2017,
she apologized and paid back some moving expenses that were
thought to be excessive.

* F. John Locke (1632-1704)

(Locke, keys, get it?)

F1. What is the name of Locke's famous essay, first published
in 1689 (but dated 1690) that includes four books and deals
with the subject of knowledge?

F2. Locke is generally considered to be part of *which
philosophical movement* that favors experiential evidence
and sensory perception for knowledge, instead of the innate
ideas favored in "rationalism"?

So Game 1 is over and, if there are no errors, JOSHUA KREITZER has
squeaked out a win. If so, hearty congratulations! Well done, sir!

(Only, what the hell has happened to Stephen Perry *now*?)

> ** Game 1, Round 9 - Miscellaneous - Fast Food Chains

This was the easiest round in the original game.

> 1. Founded in San Bernardino CA, this chain has locations in over
> 120 countries.

McDonald's. 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Pete, Peter, Marc,
and Dan Tilque. 3 for Bruce.

> 2. Founded in Jacksonville FL, this chain is now owned by a
> Canadian-based parent company named Restaurant Brands
> International.

Burger King. 4 for Peter.

> 3. Founded in Arabi LA, this chain has featured "Annie the Chicken
> Queen" in its commercials since 2009.

Popeyes [sic] (Louisiana Kitchen). 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Bruce,
Pete, and Marc.

> 4. Founded in Corbin KY, this chain is famous for its trade-secret
> original recipe of 11 herbs and spices.

Kentucky Fried Chicken (accepting KFC). 4 for everyone -- Joshua,
Dan Blum, Bruce, Jason, Pete, Peter, Marc, and Dan Tilque.

> 5. Founded in Richmond Hill ON, this chain was originally known
> for making its French fries from fresh P.E.I. potatoes.

Harvey's.

> 6. Founded in Hamilton ON, this chain is ubiquitous in Canada but
> has had challenges expanding into the US.

Tim Hortons [sic]. 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Jason, Pete, Peter,
Marc, and Dan Tilque.

> 7. Founded in Columbus OH, this chain was named after the founder's
> fourth child.

Wendy's. 4 for everyone.

> 8. Founded in Downey CA, this chain once had a promotion to coincide

Taco Bell. 4 for Bruce and Pete.

> 9. Founded in Wichita KS, this chain invented the stuffed crust

Pizza Hut. 4 for Dan Blum, Bruce, Pete, Peter, and Marc.

> 10. Founded in Toronto, this chain's phone numbers usually end in

Pizza Pizza.

"!". 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Bruce, Pete, Peter, Marc,
and Dan Tilque.

> A2. "+".

"=". 4 for Bruce and Peter.

> * B. Florida Keys

> B1. What is the westernmost city in the Florida Keys? It is

Key West. 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Bruce, Pete, Peter, Marc,
and Dan Tilque.

The weird part is that it *isn't* named for being the westernmost, or
not exactly, anyway. The city is named after the island, which is not
the westernmost of the Keys, but only the westernmost *inhabited* one.
But it was named in Spanish originally, and the second word of
the name was "Hueso" ("bone"), which is pronounced something like
"way-so" -- close enough to "west".

> B2. The biggest island in the Florida Keys is this northern
> island that calls itself the Diving Capital of the World.
> Name it.

Key Largo. 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Bruce, Pete, Peter, Marc,
and Dan Tilque.

And similarly, it isn't Largo because it's the largest. Even though
"large" in French means "wide", "largo" in Spanish means "long", and
Key Largo is also the *longest* island in the Keys.

Alicia Keys. (Both names required, of course.) 4 for Joshua,
Dan Blum, Jason, Pete, Peter, and Marc.

> C2. This American rock-band duo consists of Dan Auerbach on

Black Keys. 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Peter, and Marc.

Charles II. 4 for Bruce, Peter, and Dan Tilque. 2 for Joshua
and Dan Blum.

> D2. What Civil War battle fought in Pennsylvania in 1863 is
> often considered the war's turning point?

Gettysburg. 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Bruce, Pete, Marc,
and Dan Tilque.

> * E. Key Aides (Canadiana)

Nobody in the original game got either of these either!

> E1. Who is the current chief of staff for Premier Kathleen Wynne?

Andrew Bevan.

> E2. Who is Justin Trudeau's current chief of staff? In 2017,

Katie Telford.

"An Essay Concerning Human Understanding". The last two words
were sufficient. 4 for Joshua.

> F2. Locke is generally considered to be part of *which
> philosophical movement* that favors experiential evidence

Empiricism was the expected answer, but I decided that the
Enlightenment, a larger movement that embraced empiricism, was
also correct. So: 4 for Jason and Dan Tilque.

Dan Tilque:

Oh, you're right. Now I see what happened. As is often the case,
Jason's answers were MIME quoted-printable-encoded, so I ran them
through a QP decoder. But when I do that, I habitually do it to the
entire file of answers -- it's easier to do, and if there are no =
signs in anyone else's postings, it'll make no difference.

But this time there *were* = signs, on a line by themselves, and when
viewed as QP, of course they went away. Sorry, my carelessness.
Thanks for the correction.

So make it 4 for *Joshua*, Bruce, Peter, *Marc*, and *Dan Tilque*
-- which increases Joshua's margin of victory. Scores, if there
are now no errors:
