if we are considering the number of squares that could be made
on a sudoku grid, then the answer is quite a bit more than 86.
there are 81 1x1 squares.
there are 64 2x2 squares.
there are 49 3x3 squares.
...
so the answer is: 9*9 + 8*8 + 7*7 + 6*6 + 5*5 + 4*4 + 3*3 + 2*2 + 1*1
which is equal to the sum from i=1 to 9 of i*i,
giving a total of 285 total squares.
