These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2023-06-19,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Bloor St. Irregulars and
are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
please see my 2023-05-24 companion posting on "Questions from the
Canadian Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 6, Round 7 - Canadiana History - Canadian Prime Ministers

(Where we say something like "last" or "longest-serving", obviously
this means "so far".)

1. How many different prime ministers has Canada had?

2. William Lyon Mackenzie King was the longest-serving PM. For how
many years in total was he in office, within 1?

3. Please decode the rot13 only after you have finished with the
previous question. Orfvqrf Xvat, guerr bgure CZf unir freirq
bire svsgrra lrnef rnpu. Anzr *nal bar* bs gurz.

4. Sir Charles Tupper was the shortest-serving PM, for 68 days
in 1896. Who was second-shortest at 79 days, also the last
one born outside Canada?

5. Who was Canada's youngest PM?

6. Which PM was born in British Columbia?

7. Which PM trained as a fighter pilot and later won the Nobel
peace prize before eventually becoming Prime Minister?

8. Which PM was born in the village of Neustadt, north of Guelph,
in 1895? He was 10 years older than the province he represented
in Ottawa.

9. Which PM graduated from the Toronto's Richview Collegiate in
1978 and was a member of the school team on "Reach for the Top"?

10. Which PM was born the 18th of 19 children, 10 of whom did not
survive infancy?

* Game 6, Round 8 - Literature - Religious Literature

Answer these questions about literature based on and inspired by
religion. Unless specified otherwise, in each case name the title
(in English).

1. Originally written in Sumerian, this epic poem tells of this
king of Uruk as he makes (and loses) friends, battles gods,
and seeks eternal life.

2. Divided into three parts, this 14th-century poem by Dante
Alighieri describes the soul's journey through the afterlife.

3. This 1678 novel by John Bunyan describes a soul's journey from
the "City of Destruction" to the "Celestial City" and his trials
along the way.

4. Subtitled "A Tale of the Christ", this 1880 novel by Lew Wallace
is probably better remembered for its 1959 movie adaptation.

5. This controversial 1955 novel by Nikos Kazantzakis was adapted
by Martin Scorsese into a controversial movie starring Willem
Dafoe as Christ and David Bowie as Pontius Pilate.

6. Don't expect a movie version of this 1988 novel. A "blasphemous"
dream sequence depicting the life of Mohammed led to attempts
to assassinate the author, most recently in August 2022.

7. Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, this 1971 rock opera
is based (loosely) on the gospels' account of the passion
of Christ.

8. Despite the name, the 2011 musical "Book of Mormon" is not
in fact based on the Book of Mormon. Rather, it is a satire
of Mormon missionary life by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, better
known as the creators of which TV show?

9. After returning to Catholicism, this author gave up on vampires
and started the "Christ the Lord" series. She completed two of
the four books in the series before her death in 2021. Name her.

10. This series of 16 novels by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins
was inspired by the Book of Revelation. In turn, the books
have inspired 5 truly awful movies.

Stockholm-pub answer: one. I mean, first there is a Canadian PM,
and then there is a Canadian PM, and another or so they say. But
where we sit, it may just be same person all the time.

> 1. How many different prime ministers has Canada had?

23. 4 for Stephen, although I did like Erland's Stockholm-pub answer.

(Macdonald, Mackenzie, Abbott, Thompson, Bowell, Tupper, Laurier,
Borden, Meighen, King, Bennett, St-Laurent, Diefenbaker, Pearson,
Pierre Trudeau, Clark, Turner, Mulroney, Campbell, Chrétien, Martin,
Harper, Justin Trudeau.)

> 2. William Lyon Mackenzie King was the longest-serving PM. For how
> many years in total was he in office, within 1?

21 (accepting 20-22). As nobody was within 1 year, I accepted answers
with 2 years as "almost correct". So, 3 for Stephen. 1 for Joshua.

21 years, 5 months, and 1 day to be exact, in 1921-26, 1926-30,
and 1935-48.

> 3. Please decode the rot13 only after you have finished with the
> previous question. Besides King, three other PMs have served

John A. Macdonald (18 years 11 months in 1867-73 and 1878-91),
Pierre Trudeau (15 years 5 months in 1968-79 and 1980-84), Wilfred
Laurier (15 years 2 months in 1896-1911). 4 for Joshua and Stephen.

> 4. Sir Charles Tupper was the shortest-serving PM, for 68 days
> in 1896. Who was second-shortest at 79 days, also the last
> one born outside Canada?

John Turner (in 1984; from England). 4 for Stephen.

> 5. Who was Canada's youngest PM?

Joe Clark (age 39; in office 1979-80). 4 for Stephen.

Justin Trudeau ranks second; he was 43 when he took office in 2015.

> 6. Which PM was born in British Columbia?

> * Game 6, Round 8 - Literature - Religious Literature

> religion. Unless specified otherwise, in each case name the title
> (in English).

> 1. Originally written in Sumerian, this epic poem tells of this
> king of Uruk as he makes (and loses) friends, battles gods,
> and seeks eternal life.

(The epic of) "Bilgamesh" or "Gilgamesh". 4 for everyone -- Erland,
Dan Blum, Joshua, Dan Tilque, Stephen, and Pete.

Bilgamesh is the king's original Sumerian name; Gilgamesh is the
later Babylonian version of the name.

> 2. Divided into three parts, this 14th-century poem by Dante
> Alighieri describes the soul's journey through the afterlife.

"The Divine Comedy". 4 for Dan Blum, Joshua, Dan Tilque, and Stephen.

The three parts are "Inferno", "Purgatory", and "Paradise", but you
were asked for the overall title.

There was a related question on Thursday's rerun of "Jeopardy!",
which was originally broadcast on 2022-10-20 as part of their special
"Second Chance" tournament for losers. Instead of mentioning the
soul, they mentioned that Dante himself was a character in the
epic, and commented, "How meta". It was answered correctly on the
first try.

> along the way.

"The Pilgrim's Progress". 4 for Dan Blum, Joshua, Dan Tilque,
and Stephen.

"The Passion of the Christ" was a controversial movie co-written
and directed by Mel Gibson, with Jin Caviezel as Christ and Hristo
Shopov as Pilate; the only book it was based on was the Bible.

> to assassinate the author, most recently in August 2022.

"The Satanic Verses". 4 for everyone.

> 7. Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, this 1971 rock opera

> of Christ.

"Jesus Christ Superstar". 4 for everyone.

"South Park". 4 for Dan Blum, Joshua, Dan Tilque, Stephen, and Pete.
