These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2019-09-16,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Red Smarties and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see
my 2019-10-16 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 1, Round 7 - Science - Ancient Dog Breeds

A 2004 study of 414 purebread dog breeds identified 9 breeds
as distinct from other breeds of a more modern European origin.
They became known as the ancient breeds, although the American
Kennel Club no longer follows that terminology.

Unless otherwise indicated, name each breed described.

1. This Chinese breed of dog is known primarily for its wrinkles
and blue-black tongue.

2. This breed of dog is from northern China, and its Chinese
name "songshi quan" means "puffy lion dog". It has an extremely
dense double coat, and like <answer 1> has a blue-black tongue.
Give its two-word Western name.

3. This Japanese dog breed is a hunting dog, bred to flush and hunt
small game like birds and rabbits. Its coat can be red,
black and tan, or "sesame"; it typically has a curled tail.
When unhappy or provoked, this breed of dog is known for its
high-pitched scream.

4. This Japanese breed of dog is famous in part due to Hachiko,
a dog fiercely loyal to its owner, who would return to Shibuya
train station every day for nine years after its owner had died.

5. This breed of hunting dog originated in central Africa and has
an unusually shaped larynx. It produces a sort of yodel-like
sound, and is commonly called the Barkless Dog.

6. These dogs were bred by the Chukchi people in Northeast Asia
and are well adapted to harsh environments. They were first
introduced to Alaska by William Goosak, a Russian fur trader,
during the gold rush.

7. This dog was thought to be bred originally by the indigenous
people of Alaska's Norton Sound region. Despite appearances
this breed is not thought to be related to the Greenland Dog
or the Canadian Eskimo Dog.

8. This breed has a silky, fine, and very long coat and a tail
with a ring curl at the end. It was bred in the mountains of the
Middle East, and is consistently ranked as one of the *least*
obedient dog breeds in existence. This breed was featured in
"101 Dalmatians" as a dog named Prissy.

9. Though not one of the 9 ancient breeds listed by the American
Kennel Club, this Australian dog has fossils that date back
over 3,000 years, and since then has remained nearly unchanged
via artificial selection.

10. Featuring many of the breeds from this category, the American
Kennel Club runs the Westminster Dog Show, and the associated
Best in Show competition. *What venue* holds the Best in
Show competition?

* Game 1, Round 8 - Miscellaneous - Candy

Except as indicated, in each case name the candy. Some answers
are brand names; others are generic.

1. This candy was invented by a dentist in 1897; he devised the
machine that produces it using centrifugal force.

2. In 1921, the Curtiss Candy Co. took a chocolate bar called a
Kandy Kake and renamed it after a sports legend -- without
permission. The company later claimed in court that it had
actually named the bar after the daughter of President Grover
Cleveland. Name this chocolate bar.

3. The surnames of Forrest Mars and Bruce Murrie gave this candy
its famous name.

4. This candy was invented by an anti-smoking advocate as a type
of mint to help smokers break their habit. The candy is
small and so is its name, which comes from the German word for
peppermint, Pfefferminz.

5. Franklin Mars of the Mars company named this chocolate bar,
containing caramel and peanuts, after his horse. The horse was
raised on the family farm, called the Milky Way, in Tennessee.
Name the horse.

6. This candy was originally named Chicken Feed, and was invented
in 1898. It is now one of the most widespread Halloween candies.
Give its modern name.

7. Everlasting Gobstoppers and Laffy Taffy were both part of a
candy line launched as a direct result of *which 1971 movie*?

8. This candy isn't made with anything particularly salty, and
according to legend its name was based on a sarcastic remark
made by an Atlantic City candy store owner after a storm flooded
his store.

9. A popular, but likely apocryphal, theory holds that this candy
was named after the sound and motion of the machine depositing
chocolate onto the conveyor belt.

10. This candy was featured in soldiers' rations during World War II
because of its durability in all weather conditions, and stories
are told of soldiers using it to patch holes in vehicle tires.

Oddly enough, I met one of those today when I was in a vet's waiting
room. "Part dalmatian?" I asked. "Yes, they're bred with dalmatians",
the man answered. "Also with dingos. It's an Australian cattle dog."

> * Game 1, Round 7 - Science - Ancient Dog Breeds

> A 2004 study of 414 purebread dog breeds identified 9 breeds
> as distinct from other breeds of a more modern European origin.
> They became known as the ancient breeds, although the American
> Kennel Club no longer follows that terminology.

> Unless otherwise indicated, name each breed described.

In several cases the official name of the breed includes an
adjective but removing this does not create an ambgiguity between
AKC-recognized breeds. For example, the Chinese Shar-Pei is the
only one with Shar-Pei in its name. In the original game Shar-Pei
was actually the expected answer on tht one, and I have decided
to make thinks uniform by accepting unqualified names of this type
for other breeds in the round.

> 1. This Chinese breed of dog is known primarily for its wrinkles
> and blue-black tongue.

Chinese Shar-Pei. 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, and Bruce.

> 2. This breed of dog is from northern China, and its Chinese
> name "songshi quan" means "puffy lion dog". It has an extremely
> dense double coat, and like <answer 1> has a blue-black tongue.
> Give its two-word Western name.

Chow Chow. 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, and Bruce.

Shiba Inu. 4 for Bruce.

> 4. This Japanese breed of dog is famous in part due to Hachiko,
> a dog fiercely loyal to its owner, who would return to Shibuya
> train station every day for nine years after its owner had died.

Akita. 4 for Joshua and Bruce.

> 5. This breed of hunting dog originated in central Africa and has
> an unusually shaped larynx. It produces a sort of yodel-like
> sound, and is commonly called the Barkless Dog.

Basenji. 4 for everyone -- Joshua, Dan Blum, Bruce, Calvin,
and Dan Tilque.

> 6. These dogs were bred by the Chukchi people in Northeast Asia
> and are well adapted to harsh environments. They were first
> introduced to Alaska by William Goosak, a Russian fur trader,
> during the gold rush.

Siberian Husky. 4 for Bruce, Calvin, and Dan Tilque. 2 for Dan Blum.

> 7. This dog was thought to be bred originally by the indigenous
> people of Alaska's Norton Sound region. Despite appearances
> this breed is not thought to be related to the Greenland Dog
> or the Canadian Eskimo Dog.

Alaskan Malamute. 4 for Dan Blum, Bruce, and Dan Tilque.

Afghan. 4 for Dan Blum, Bruce, and Calvin.

> 9. Though not one of the 9 ancient breeds listed by the American
> Kennel Club, this Australian dog has fossils that date back
> over 3,000 years, and since then has remained nearly unchanged
> via artificial selection.

Dingo. 4 for Joshua, Calvin, and Dan Tilque.

> 10. Featuring many of the breeds from this category, the American
> Kennel Club runs the Westminster Dog Show, and the associated
> Best in Show competition. *What venue* holds the Best in
> Show competition?

Madison Square Garden (New York). I accepted it with "Gardens".
4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, and Bruce. 3 for Calvin.

> * Game 1, Round 8 - Miscellaneous - Candy

> Except as indicated, in each case name the candy. Some answers
> are brand names; others are generic.

> 1. This candy was invented by a dentist in 1897; he devised the
> machine that produces it using centrifugal force.

Cotton candy (a.k.a. candy floss or fairy floss). 4 for Dan Blum,
Bruce, and Calvin.

Baby Ruth. 4 for everyone.

To help you evaluate the plausibility of the claim: Ruth Cleveland
was well known and was known as Baby Ruth during her lifetime, but
that lifetime was 1891-1904. In 1921 George "Babe" Ruth was just
reaching the peak of his career.

> 3. The surnames of Forrest Mars and Bruce Murrie gave this candy
> its famous name.

M&M's. 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Bruce, and Dan Tilque.

> 4. This candy was invented by an anti-smoking advocate as a type
> of mint to help smokers break their habit. The candy is
> small and so is its name, which comes from the German word for
> peppermint, Pfefferminz.

Pez. 4 for everyone.

> 5. Franklin Mars of the Mars company named this chocolate bar,
> containing caramel and peanuts, after his horse. The horse was
> raised on the family farm, called the Milky Way, in Tennessee.
> Name the horse.

Snickers. 4 for everyone.

> 6. This candy was originally named Chicken Feed, and was invented
> in 1898. It is now one of the most widespread Halloween candies.
> Give its modern name.

Candy Corn. 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Bruce, and Dan Tilque.

> 7. Everlasting Gobstoppers and Laffy Taffy were both part of a
> candy line launched as a direct result of *which 1971 movie*?

"Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". 4 for Joshua, Calvin,
and Dan Tilque.

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is a different movie -- it's
the 2005 remake, which used the title of the original novel that
both were based on. So no points for that.

> 8. This candy isn't made with anything particularly salty, and
> according to legend its name was based on a sarcastic remark
> made by an Atlantic City candy store owner after a storm flooded
> his store.

Salt water taffy. (Accepting seawater taffy.) 4 for everyone.

> 9. A popular, but likely apocryphal, theory holds that this candy
> was named after the sound and motion of the machine depositing
> chocolate onto the conveyor belt.

Hershey's Kiss. 4 for Bruce.

> 10. This candy was featured in soldiers' rations during World War II
> because of its durability in all weather conditions, and stories
> are told of soldiers using it to patch holes in vehicle tires.

Tootsie Roll.
